There's no such thing as a stupid question DM...... I always record at quite a high volume BUT have done that for all the tapes I've transferred; your suggestion is obviously well concidered, thanks for that

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but are your recording levels set too high, either on the cassette deck or in the software? The "line in" recording level on the recorder might need a nudge downward if it's too distorted.

As for tape head cleaning, I'd recommend giving a tape head cleaning cassette a miss. From what I've read, the effect of using one is similar to rubbing sandpaper on your tape heads. Stick with the Isopropyl.
