surely all these stories are part MES messing with our heads - something his music does quite effectively but his mischievous side always comes out - I remember him saying hiw much he loved Ronnie Raygun's America.

I once (about 1992) read an MES interview in a Bristol listings magazine in which he claimed that Miles Davis had once asked if he could use The Fall rhythm section in his band. 

MES said he turned Miles down, telling him he "doesn't lend the lads out." Surely nonsense but what fabulous nonsense.

The Fall/Motown story is quite amusing, but comes from 1984 when the Fall were having their customary label problems. According to "Hip Priest" by Simon Ford:

"...One unlikely offer came from US label Motown, where an enthusiastic A&R man had offered Smith a £46,000 advance. 'The funny thing was', Smith said, 'this guy at Motown asked for some of our old stuff he could listen to and the only thing I had to hand was Hex Enduction Hour and the first line on that is, "Where are the obligatory ni**ers?" I thought, "When they hear that, we've had it." '. Smith was correct. It was not long before Motown's head office contacted Smith with its verdict: 'We see no commercial potential in this band whatsoever' "

Good idea for a thread, Robin! Off the top of my head, I know it doesn't quite fit your criteria but it's the only one that came to mind.....The Fall recorded their 11th session in May 1987, around the time that 'There's A Ghost In My House' entered the charts (only making it as far as 30, though). I read somewhere that they were nearly signed by Motown: is that true, and if so, was this the incentive?
