The fact that we might have unearthed the only recording (outside the BBC archives which may never be opened up in full) of the Farenji Warriors for example (whether that is one’s thing or not being beside the point) is certainly quite exciting and probably more so than say datamining 20 year old Youtube archives in the future. The past present (future) balance is important, though with a gradual slide to the former as we get more experienced (euphemism alert!) I cherished albums much more when I had to order them from record shops or borrow deleted LPs ( they used to delete them !!! ) but by the 90s releases were often available everywhere straight away in several different formats... okay but now its gone up another level. You don't actually have to own anything anymore what with people on message boards that share just about everything thats ever been released.and now the BBC making tracks they play immediately saveable.. Its all very nice but in an age where there is so much being released and so much is playful , parodic and just really music about music... I look back on the days when I used to go out and try to buy a couple of albums a month that were worth buying and really have a good search and a good chat with shop owners and collectors. Obviously not all NEW music is good - there are some culdesacs largely caused by the search for the lowest common denominator to make profit out of commercialisation rather than talent/creativity. I remember him comparing it to cinema - eg no one who likes film would only watch stuff from before an arbitrary date. I didn't like everything he played but I think that was part of the point - he liked it and challenged us to open our ears, minds and hearts. That doesn't mean to say I don't have a soft spot for certain periods of music that are linked to certain periods of my life and a bit of nostalgia doesn't harm unless you don't wallow!   Mark L ________________________________ From: mr_maudlin To: peel@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, 5 December 2013, 14:01 Subject: [peel] Re: Karls Tape 24th & 25th Feb 1981 uploaded to Moo   There is some great work going on here in saving important parts of the nations' broadcasting heritage. Many thanks again to Steve Lowman (who can be heard on one of the tapes) Rocker and those who contributed to the distribution costs. Looking at the list of SL tapes, there are a couple of batches which have not been wikified other than just the odd show. The digital rebroadcast of this programme shows how gems from the archive can still reach new audiences.” RadioCentre also welcomes the development, with Linda Smith, CEO saying: “We have argued for a long time that the BBC should unlock some of its great content through partnerships with commercial broadcasters. (Dave Thompson) Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2013 06:04:46 -0800 (PST) Subject: Shirley Collins 1969 Top Gear Message-ID: <1387721086.29049.YahooMailNeo@...> There's no surviving recording of it that I'm aware of, but here are some memories of the joint Shirley Collins/Tinderbox session from March 1969. (Taken from the Steve Ashley "Fire & Wine" book that I wrote earlier this year) When Shirley Collins was booked for a BBC Radio session, Tinderbox - Steve Ashley and Dave Menday - were called up alongside her, both as accompanists and performers in their own right. Shirley: “I liked Steve’s ‘English’ quality in both his singing and song-writing—at a time when most people were trying to sound as American as they could. And there was an intelligence and integrity there too, which has, of course, lasted throughout his life. So that would have been why [producer] John Marshall and I asked Steve to sing both for the broadcast and on Anthems [although] I’m sorry to say I have no recollection of the John Peel session at all!” Strangely, neither does Dave Menday.  “Apart from being honoured, flattered and scared at being asked to accompany Shirley, when her last accompanist had been Davy Graham, the only other thing I remember is being in the lift with John Walters, Peel’s producer, when at one of the floors in Broadcasting House in stepped Victor Sylvester the 30s/40s dance band leader in full white tie and dinner jacket gear. “  Dave, already in thrall to the sound of those bands, was thrilled. “I’d always been a bit of a fan, although it wasn’t something to admit at the time!” Compounding the broadcast’s obscurity in the minds of its participants, the broadcast tapes of this session were lost long ago. Dave laughs, “ I hope I did Shirley justice, but can’t remember what we did. I do remember listening to it on our little transistor radio at home, and being pleased it had gone out on air.” Recording at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios on January 28, for broadcast on March 5, Tinderbox performed eight songs in total, three with Collins (”Nelly The Milkmaid,” “Ramble Away” and “Lowlands,” the first and last taken from the still gestating Anthems in Eden), and five in their own right—”Fire And Wine,” “Oliver Woodworm,” “Dreamsong,” “The Finite Time” and a brand new addition to the songbook, “The Spirit Of Christmas.” "It was shortly before Christmas 1968, as I was wandering through Rochester.. As I remember, the tune came into my head and I had no instrument to help me keep it there. So I just kept singing it to myself and it became very mesmeric. It took all day to write the words and my obsession with these left me no time for food, so I was high as a kite on hunger by the end of the day.  “It still carries that spirit for me on the rare occasions that I perform it today. Dave worked out a great guitar part and I played the whistle. We’ve recorded it three times; the first for John Peel’s Nightride in 1969, the second time was during the first Stroll On LP sessions in 1971 and the third, a live version thirty-five years later at my sixtieth birthday concert. Apart from that, I usually sing it on Christmas Eve.” “The Christmas Song is one of the best songs Steve’s ever written,” Dave Menday agrees. “It is the only song of his that I still sing myself, and I’m pleased to have contributed something to the arrangement. It’s tricky to play in that 2/4 time signature and those others who have tried to do it in a straight 4/4 lose the essence of the song.  “There’s not a word I would quibble with or change. It evokes the emotional and social coming together of that time of year like no other song does and presents those ideas through stunningly precise visual imagery. Its universality is secured because it is uncoloured by the ignorance and superstition of religion, or the greed and exploitation of commercial frenzy that usually accompany Christmas festivities. A gem.” This particular version, the first recording, Steve remembers as being “particularly special. Sometimes you can get the rhythm and pitch right, but not quite catch the spirit of a song, but with that recording of ‘Spirit of Christmas,’ I remember it being just right. I had a copy of it for a while but it disappeared, so I have nothing to go by except my memory of it—and an appreciative comment from John Curl, who took over from Peel after midnight.  “’Fire and Wine’ was good too. In those days, Dave played the guitar part and I sang it and played a tambourine. ‘That was quite pleasant really’ said John Peel afterwards.  “We also played a daft song called ‘Oliver Woodworm.’ I played autoharp on this one and it was all about the woodworm that was in the instrument. ‘Nasty little mole working in the dark, trying to make a hole in my autoharp, hoping that my autoharp will fall apart’. That was the general gist of it. The chorus was:  Oliver Woodworm boring all the day Please be good worm and bore yourself away. “It got faster and faster until it became impossible to keep playing. We should have recorded it really. Dave had a nice one too called ‘Dream Song’ and we did ‘Finite Time’ as well. We backed Shirley on ‘Nellie the Milkmaid,’ with Dave on guitar and me playing whistle, and we also sang ‘Lowlands Away’ with her. Then Dave accompanied Shirley on guitar for ‘Ramble Away’”  From so_it_goes_2512@... Sun Dec 22 19:17:39 2013 From: so_it_goes_2512@... (so_it_goes_2512@...) The first session was repeated quite a few times over the years, most recently on Karl’s March Mixtape though only one track on that. The best sounding recording is from the repeat on 16th December 1982 (strangely the Best of Year session on that F50 programme was their 1981 session not the 1982 one). Even that show was available from multiple sources but the best sound was from our erstwhile contributor Ray, so I’ve uploaded the session extracted from his show to the Mooo. The second session I didn’t have. The very quiet wav file was actually from the third session. I’ve amplified the file within Audacity but also substituted the first track of Singing Today with my own recording from my June 1983 mixtape which is much clearer. Perhaps Martinw has a copy of the second session somewhere? I'm 5 hours behind "all ya'll" as they say 'round here... just finished our big unwrapping. 'Tis a lovely day and life is good. We are all on this list because we like good music and we like good radio. As a filmmaker and editor, I had a bit of success with a documentary I made in 2010 about the last surviving DJ from the first black-owned station in the US... WERD-AM... which was here in Atlanta and signed on in 1949. At the time they called it "Negro Format" ... and these stations were crucial to the advancement of civil rights (white listeners could check out real-deal R&B and learn of a rich culture their parents were claiming was trash.) This particular DJ, James "Alley Pat" Patrick (of black Irish roots,) was on the air here from 1951 to 1989. He played great, new music all the time (sound familiar?) and best of all, had a big fat mouth. My film, "Alley Pat: The Music Is Recorded," is his story. It came in 1st Place at both the Kansas City and Atlanta Film Festivals. As it is full of terrific tracks I have not had the $$ to license, I can't sell it or air it.... but I can give it away to... well... all ya'll. Even if you just look at 15 minutes of it I think you'll be hooked https://vimeo.com/65016982 and the password is preachers You can share with your like-minded friends but do not post the link publicly. It's got an A+ mix ready to be played loud. Er, loudly. Here's hoping your holiday week is good-rockin' and laughing all the way. (Alley Pat will help, ha!) Tom Roche From john.bravin@... Enjoyed listening to the whole show, but my ears really pricked up at 19:15 when Pat plays Bill Doggett's Honky Tonk in the background. Was this the original for Grinderswitch's Pickin the Blues (Peel's long time signature tune). I know all 12-bar blues sound kind of the same, but the likeness is startling. That makes it the earliest available show which features a complete Nirvana session.
