It's a peer to peer network where you don't download 
from a single server source, but using torrent software you are downloading 
packets from multiple peers. Eventually you recreate the entire set of files. 
 
This depends on people keeping their torrent software 
running to provide the data when someone goes looking for it, and after a while 
many torrents "die".
 
Some years ago the available JP recordings were 
collected into 17 DVD sized chunks and made available as a torrent. It spreads 
the traffic load and meant that no-one needed to find all of the webspace on an 
ISP.
