Message-ID: Hi I've noticed that on two different PCs and on multiple browsers that some actions on the wiki run extremely slowly. For example, in IE8, then accessing the Help menu on the Peel Wikia Page, then "Make A New Page" and then right-clicking the "Tracklisting" link, causes the browser to use lots of CPU, and the context menu fails to come up. After a while, the message "A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly." etc. If I then stop the script, then the rightclick menu I was after, then appears. I'm pretty sure this has only started happening recently, can anyone else reproduce it? One thing I have done recently is update Java to version 7 update 7. Stuart From stuartb@... If John's comments about Reader's Digest don't make you laugh, nothing will. 09 October 1997 (BFBS) . John complains about daddy long legs, not being able to get a ticket for Celtic v. Liverpool (which was a goal drought anyway) and complains about photographers too. In the SL Tapes, not much Peel action, but a bit of AK. L273 duplicates a section of 04 September 1992 which I shared from the 500 Box many moons ago, although the other side has Andy's show from 1992-09-05 with that shared Papa Wemba session. Finally, L278 contains a previously shared section of 19 December 1992 with numbers 38-30 of the FF, and an AK show which I have been unable to date (DC Basehead in session). I'm working on a complete list of Kershaw show dates and sessions to help with carbon dating.....don't hold your (collective) breath. I remember an account, from John Pilger's book 'Hidden Agendas', about a story in an early Rupert Murdoch paper. As fortune would have it the story is mentioned in an article Pilger wrote for the New Statesmen: "The Murdoch "ethos" was demonstrated right from the beginning of his career, as Richard Neville has documented. In 1964, his Sydney tabloid, the Daily Mirror, published the diary of a 14-year-old schoolgirl under the headline, "WE HAVE SCHOOLGIRL'S ORGY DIARY". A 13-year-old boy, who was identified, was expelled from the same school. Soon afterwards, he hanged himself from his mother's clothesline. The "sex diary" was subsequently found to be fake." But in the article there was something that I can't remember being in the book: "Soon after Murdoch bought the News of the World in 1971, a strikingly similar episode involving an adolescent diary led to the suicide of a 15-year-old girl." I think this may well be referring to the poor girl who took her own life and who the Daily Mail have written about. A search for Richard Neville's writings on this produced the following: "During an interview years later, I reminded Murdoch of this event and his reaction was sharp: "Don't you ever make mistakes?" Of course I do. Many. After acquiring the News of the World in London in 1971, Rupert discovered another diary, while he was campaigning against a popular BBC TV show, Top of the Pops. His paper accused its stars of "promiscuity" with young dancers in the audience. One of these was Samantha MacAlpine, aged 15, whose "leatherette bound book", according Murdoch's news desk, "could well blow wide open the scandal at the BBC". The day after this report, Samantha MacAlpine committed suicide. The News of the World tried to cover itself with the headline, THIS GIRL WAS A VICTIM NOW SHE IS DEAD, but the coroner stated that Samantha's diary was "pure fantasy . unconnected with reality", (like much Murdoch journalism). A Scotland Yard officer accused the paper of being "ludicrous and irresponsible". As is the Murdoch style, the evidence from the inquest was kept from the readers. Also suppressed was the statement of the forensic pathologist, that in his opinion, Samantha had died a virgin." Barring the incorrect first name and misspelled surname this is her isn't it? And what to make of Neville's claims? 'Lies, damn lies' http://www.newstatesman.com/international-politics/2009/07/pilger-murdoc\ h-sun-mackenzie 'DIRTY DIGGERS' DEADLY DIARIES' http://www.richardneville.com/Journal/2004/journal310806.html -- Scroll down for the story which includes images from the newspapers. If you highlight the file, there is a little icon with heads with a popup label “Share”. If you press the icon, you then see the download URL for others. There is a copy button in there too so that you can paste the URL into a message to the Peel Mailing List. If there are no files there, perhaps the upload did not complete. When you upload a file using the Mediafire webpage, it should ask you to browse for a file. Then you should see a progress bar when it is uploading to Mediafire. When complete, the Mediafire webpage should tell you, and also tell you the URL for others to download. The 1975 and 1976 VdGG sessions are quite possibly my all time favourite Peel sessions. Listened to them many times over the years. Never tire of hearing them. Also like to say a very big thanks to all of the uploaders and those involved in the tape transfers and all who contribute to this, and it can't be overstated enough, very important 'archive'. I know it's been said many times before but it's almost criminal that the BBC didn't treat their own archive with the same loving care in the past. Thankfully that's changing. Still, and always has been, my favourite broadcaster though. --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, "haze_harrison" wrote: > > > Thanks to everyone for the last few months of uploads - I will find time > to listen to them all eventually ;-) > > I have been busy rescuing early 70s Sunday Chart Shows from rusting reel > to reel tapes. The 1975 and 1976 VdGG sessions are quite possibly my all time favourite Peel sessions. I wouldn't go quite that far myself, but they're certainly up there (and on their own terms as music, not simply as a bridge between what Peel had played before that and what he'd go on to play - VdGG/Hammill don't need to be justified by saying that, they stand alone). I've said quite often in various other places - but never here from memory - that the BBC is worse now than then because it is better, or better because it is worse, depending on what your priority is. The indifference and disdain for pop and rock music and popular culture generally - which, at its worst, created a culture where it was seen as impossible, paradoxical, even absurd to apply a proper sense of public service and moral responsibility to light entertainment and thus allowed Savile to do what he did - was the price we had to pay for Play for Today, The Ascent of Man and the rest, while the absence of such things today is the price we pay for popular culture being treated far more seriously and representatively. I wish we didn't have to choose, but the history and nature of this country makes it inevitable that we do. Most of our fellow Europeans, at least in the countries which were democratic from 1945 to 1990, don't have this built-in problem. RPC From dutch_record_59@... Side A has 41 minutes, starting about 7 minutes into the programme, whilst side B gives up the final 29 minutes of the show with the subsequent handover to JP. Tape L238 similarly contains two chunks of Andy Kershaw from 28 November 1992 (John Delafose and the Eunice Playboys in session). Side A has the first 45 minutes of the programme, with the 11:30 news unusually intact. Side B has the final 21 minutes of the show again with AK's handover to Peel. Tape L239 follows the same pattern - Side A has 45 minutes from the start of Andy Kershaw's show from 14 November 1992 (Mighty Sparrow in session) whilst on the flip is the final 29 minutes of the show with handover to JP. Tape L240 contains segments of Andy Kershaw from 13 June 1992 (Miracle Legion in session). Side A cuts into the show after about 7 minutes but fills up the available tape. Over on side B, Kershaw's show is concluded with an 18 minute section before continuing with the Peel show that followed it. I managed to get all the sections to piece together the complete Andy Kershaw show from 16 May 1992 (David "Honeyboy" Edwards in session), minus edits for the news and tape flips. The show starts on side A of tape L251 before flipping to Side A of tape L249. It concludes back on side B of tape L251. The final slice of Kershaw is 33 minutes from 19 September 1992 (Sheila Chandra in session) which was found on side A of tape L253. The recording seems to be from somewhere in the middle of the show. [I should mention another Kershaw recording from this batch, that of 24 October 1992 (West Nkosi & Cheb Khaled in session) from tape L236. This was the tape that snapped on me so was ripped and shared earlier by Stuart]. Two other non-Kershaw recordings from this batch are: >From side B of tape L237, 43 minutes of an Annie Nightingale request show. The "Alternative 25" apparently. This includes the handover to Gary Davies who is on next. What a treat. Finally, tape L242 yielded up a complete edition of Radio 3's "Mixing It", presumably from April 1992 as a couple of concert dates for early May are read out. Diamanda Galas is the guest on the show. This recording was incredibly crackly, with countless static clicks throughout. I've spent an insane amount of time cleaning it up, manually de-clicking it - effort that far outweighs the value of the recording, I'm sure. Oh well, at least it's now in a more pleasant state to be listened to. All files can be find on the moo in relevant subfolders: http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/dr_mango/SL_Tapes/ Now onto the next batch. Can provide and correct a couple of dates for you: the 1992 Mixing It you uploaded is from 27th April 1992 (the Times bills Diamanda Galas for that date) the 1993 Mixing It on Steve's section of the Mooo is from 10th May 1993 (the Guardian bills the ReBirth Brass Band at the Union Chapel, being recorded for Mixing It, on Friday 14th May) the Andy Kershaw show dated to 22nd May 1993 is in fact from 15th May. It is correct that the previous week's album chart is *dated* to 15th May, but the charts have always been announced some time before the Saturday to which they are officially dated, and that album chart would have been broadcast on Sunday 9th May; ergo the Kershaw show has to be the 15th. all the best, RPC From so_it_goes_2512@... (Incidentally One Little Indian are putting out, with my co-operation, a 30th anniversary edition of Strive To Survive, with the addition of the album demos and the live set from the reunion gig we played at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2007.) Back to Peel - I have some info / sessions from the years 1978 - 1984 that I would like to add to the site, but being a newbie I've yet to successfully navigate my way around it. Only this morning I found the first 12 mins or so of Peel's show from 20th Feb '84 on cassette that was unlabelled. Quality is superb stereo, and it's just a shame that it's all there is of that befor the tape runs out. Peel reads out a letter from a disgruntled 'old school' listener, with his rhythm pal Kid Jensen putting the bleeps where expletives should be. The three songs he plays are "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKA, "Beating My Head" by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and part of "We Are Ninja" by Frank Chickens. He also mentions, at the start of the show, that there is a session by Hagar The Womb.
