think you deserve your well-gotten gains - would prefer a vinyl copy but not found one in my local charity shopees over the last 20 years!

I'm not certain Peel played Neu Smell much as I remember that it was firmly ensconced at top of NME Indie charts for some weeks and I remember wondering what it sounded like and there was no friendly neighbourhood record shop like Mike had to assault my ears and none of my friends had a copy and if Peel didn't play it I didn't get to hear it. Young people don't know how luck they are with this modern internet thingy! I still wonder what it sounds like to this day - Kev - do you get money if I download it/is it downloadable?

If peel didn`t play ''tube disasters'' at the time he should have got a great big kick up the ass [in a nice way of course], the impact it had on me at the time when it was being played full volume in a high street record store was astounding, i remember as if it was yesterday cash in hand rushing over to shop owner ''WHAT IS THAT MAN'' [ deep down i probably reckoned on it being a crass release with the southern studio production sound, intensity of the anger on said record and the fact the owner of the shop had a liking for this kind of thing displaying honey banes '' a big piss off to the music biz'' sleeve on the shop door to the dismay of his wife]as exciting as when i first heard the Rudimentry peni - ''farce'' release.

You send it/media fire, one of those should do it kev for the 12 min peel show you have.

hi Mike

I only recall Peel playing tracks from Flux's "Uncarved Block" sometime in 1986, but nothing prior to that although I'm sure he must have played "Tube Disaster" when the Neu Smell EP was released in '81. (Incidentally One Little Indian are putting out, with my co-operation, a 30th anniversary edition of Strive To Survive, with the addition of the album demos and the live set from the reunion gig we played at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2007.)

Back to Peel - I have some info / sessions from the years 1978 - 1984 that I would like to add to the site, but being a newbie I've yet to successfully navigate my way around it. Only this morning I found the first 12 mins or so of Peel's show from 20th Feb '84 on cassette that was unlabelled. Quality is superb stereo, and it's just a shame that it's all there is of that befor the tape runs out. Peel reads out a letter from a disgruntled 'old school' listener, with his rhythm pal Kid Jensen putting the bleeps where expletives should be.

The three songs he plays are "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKA, "Beating My Head" by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and part of "We Are Ninja" by Frank Chickens. He also mentions, at the start of the show, that there is a session by Hagar The Womb.

Of any interest, do you think?

Mike - you are an absolute star!

Thanks so much, I am gobsmacked to hear this again, I really cannot thank you enough. Still feels like a bit of a dream to be able to hear it now, and I just remembered that Peel's comment stemmed from Stiff Little Fingers having a track at the time called "You Can't Say Crap On The Radio"..

Wow..

Bit of a long shot, I think, but the band I was in back in '78 / '79 (the Epileptics) released a single under the name The Licks ("1970s Have Been Made In Hong Kong") which Peel opened his show with on 13th Nov 79, and I recall him making some comment about the words we used in the chorus. Does anyone have this programme, as I would dearly love to hear it again, even if it's only the intro, our record, and the comments..? Thanks in advance :)
