I have new found respect for Wedding Present as I have just discovered their cover of Lonnie's Cumberland Gap - they knew the way into Peel and my heart! And being able to sing has never meant much to me - Donegan, MarkE, Ian Curtis, Rotten etc Its the passion, the energy.

But also discovered on a tape I am digitising that he also had a bad time with Dr John when he met him and didn't play his records for 20 years. He seemed to have a track record of this sort of confrontation/falling out with folk which seems odd to me as he was always thought of as cuddly uncle John although Kershaw portrays him as a curmudgeonly Eeyore figure. He fell out with Bolan (when he stopped singing of elves and wizards and became a pop star), Zappa, Dr John - others?

Mark

I agree - chalk and cheese (or turd and toffee) ...

I played "Invocation..." from the Absolutely Free LP on my show a few weeks ago and got a great response. Most people didn't even realize it was Zappa. Working my way forward from here, but am prepared for a certain amount of disappointment. Can't agree with the Maestro about Yes though. Plenty of great stuff up until Topographic. He was right though about ELP. Apart from "Lucky Man" it's a tough listen.
