I rarely find Zappa to be funny on record but I do agree that the first couple of Mothers records have some great stuff going for them musically. I played "Invocation..." from the Absolutely Free LP on my show a few weeks ago and got a great response. Most people didn't even realize it was Zappa. Working my way forward from here, but am prepared for a certain amount of disappointment. Can't agree with the Maestro about Yes though. Plenty of great stuff up until Topographic. He was right though about ELP. Apart from "Lucky Man" it's a tough listen.
I do share the love he had for the Wedding Present though. I asked him once if he thought Gedge's voice at all reminded him of Ian Curtis. He was thoroughly confused at the mere suggestion of it :-)
