This question has popped up previously, I think, and the best answer I can give you is that the last show in which he definitely used it as a sig for his Radio 1 shows (and for which there is an available recording to prove it) was 29 February 1992. He had mooted the idea of changing it before (in 1980 and 1986 for example) and some of this parish remember him trying out other theme tunes in the mid 80s. In the 25 September 2001 show, he somehow plays it by accident instead of a session track by Locust. He continued to use it for his World Service shows right up to the end.
