I've recently uploaded the inlays for the SL tapes so that the Andy Kershaw tracklists (such as they are) can be seen. One thing I've noticed while tracklisting the Max-dat tapes is that quite often, the Ceefax tracklistings (which the Avistic tracklistings are based on I think?) had a preference for listing album tracks, and preferring LPs at that (understandable) but when listening to the shows, very often John has played the singles, EPs or even CDs. This might well have an impact on pages such the Fall show appearances page on the wiki. For example the glut of tracks played in early April 1994 supposedly from Middle Class Revolt but actually consist of the 3 tracks on the 12" 15 Ways. Oh well, all will become clear when the SL project lumbers into that year.... (lorcan58) Date: Sun, 01 Jan 2012 23:03:08 -0000 Subject: First Footing In-Reply-To: Message-ID: The avistic playlists are drawn from a number of sources (some Ceefax, some BBC PASB listings kindly donated to me by Mick Ashman of this parish, a few years of handwritten listings from Tim Joseph, the BBC website, my own hasty scribbles and a variety of other helpful people). But yes, I'd agree that the Ceefax (and indeed the PASBs) were not always reliable (not least because Peel was in the habit of making last-minute changes, sometimes while the programme was under way, or playing a white label rather than a release) and there is no substitute for actually hearing the broadcast (which is after all the acid test). And as we all know, Peel was the sort of fellow who would go for the five 7" singles on different-coloured vinyl rather than the eminently more sensible CD. I'm actually looking at some 1993 listings now and one of the things that strikes me is how difficult it was to verify anything in an age before the Internet had really taken off. We may be subject to multiple mutually-contradictory sources now, but back then once Peel's voice had faded into the ether, all you were left with was "What did he say?"... --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, "Stuart" wrote: > One thing I've noticed while tracklisting the Max-dat tapes is that quite often, the Ceefax tracklistings (which the Avistic tracklistings are based on I think?) had a preference for listing album tracks, and preferring LPs at that (understandable) but when listening to the shows, very often John has played the singles, EPs or even CDs. He currently has a show on San Francisco's KUSF in Exile, playing a mix of punk, new wave & reggae plus full sets from his collection of live tapes. Previous shows are available at the bottom of this page: http://www.angelfire.com/oh/liveperformances/livetapes.html Track listings for the shows are here: http://www.kusf-archives.com/search?q=terry+hammer FAB MAB LIVE REDUX is a collection of live tape recordings that were recorded, mixed & produced by Terry Hammer circa 1979 through 1981 for various Bay Area radio stations. The weekly program was originally called FAB MAB LIVE.This is your chance to go back in time to the period when it all began and enjoy the great punk bands who started it all. These recordings were recorded sitting in the loud venues with headphones on and mixing on a cheap Peavey 12 channel mixing board direct to 2 Track Reel To Reel. They reflect the way the bands sounded at the time, drunk, stoned, out of tune and sometimes in tune. So,sit back, tune in,turn on,and experience the thrill of being at the great punk venues back in the day when it all began. And since these shows were mixed on headphones, they also sound better listening to them with headphones on turned up LOUD! Most shows are less than an hour,so, the hour will be filled with a delicious mixture of old school punk & reggae, with a taste of motown & 60's garage bands to round out the program. For a complete list of my live recordings,go to my website at http://www.angelfire.com/oh/liveperformances/livetapes.html From anythingshouldhappen@... The archive list has been on his website for years, it's only since he started his radio show that he's mentioned selling the recordings. See email from Terry below.... i did create a small indie label to attempt to put the shows out.it's called Vampir,i was able to release the lewd on vinyl called lewd conduct in a public place (a second pressing was a co-release with subterranean where we also added 3 studio tracks from the sf underground double 7") also released the offs live nov 7,1980 as a cd only release, licensed the young canadians to white noise to release and licensed 3 delta 5 songs to kill rock stars for their release of delta 5 singles & sessions cd. the offs cd didn't sell wel and i went bankrupt from it,so no more releases.couldn't find any indie labels interested in releasing any shows,so now kusf in exile is a way to get them out there again for fans other than selling the shows through my website: http://www.angelfire.com/oh/liveperformances/livetapes.html --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, Anything Should Happen wrote: > > The archive is great, I'd have concerns that there's no mention (as far as > I can see) of the bands getting paid. My understanding of the tech aspect is that it's very good now (and has been for a year or so), with variable bitrate aac (better than mp3) averaging about 128 kbps but often exceeding 200 (via BBC iPlayer). Sadly, from the start of i/net broadcasting until a few years ago (maybe), the quality was poor eg 64 kbps mp3 and even lower, which gives a tinny sound to the b/cast. The situation was/is further complicated by people "capturing" those low-bitrate shows and converting to higher bitrates eg 192, which does not improve sound quality at all .... --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, "haze_harrison" wrote: > > I'm not monitoring as such but I have my PC set to download "Classic Concert" and "Live Music Hour" automatically. I've been on the list for a few years, but not really said much - and latterly haven't even been regularly downloading posted shows. However, I got bored with my listening habits recently and, spurred on by finding the John Peel's Record Box Ch4 TV show in the darkest recesses of my hard drive, downloaded a show at random. AND it was a revelation.... it was a 1999 show when John played his bootleg tape quality version of The Misunerstood's cover of Mona....I would *never* have heard this, and my life would have been the poorer for it... So, a HUGE thank you to everyone involved in taking the time to make these files, I'm really grateful and even if I don't say much on here, I'm still gonna be out there listening (even if not under the bedclothes like I used to!) Incidentally, has the record box ever been replicated in MP3 format and how close are we to a complete Peelenium (the show I heard was 1943 and a corker...) JP From stuartb@... DM From: so_it_goes_2512 To: peel@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, 27 January 2012, 11:17 Subject: [peel] Re: Does he own peel.wikia.com?   Well, I was content just to keep this between ourselves, but since you have chosen to publicise it, I will now give my perspective on the matter. I think you'll find, dear Sedoi, that the enemy lurks in your mirror. We (not just me) repeatedly warned you about making unnecessary edits to other people's work, all of which you chose to ignore, and the original ban was instituted not only at my request: other Wiki users complained too, and one expressly urged me to delete your account due to your continued interference. You were given the maximum period allowed (one year) since we had tried every means to persuade you to follow the standard format, and you never once attempted to get in contact to explain yourself. Then, once your year was up, you started in the same manner, altering an administrator's work without consultation, and I felt that you had obviously not taken heed of our wishes. This time you have taken notice, although not in the way one would have wanted. If you wish me (or the other Steve) to review this, you should write to us personally instead of posting vitriolic and unfounded public comments here. No, I do not own the Wiki, but I feel it is necessary for administrators to protect the work of others that has taken a lot of time to prepare. If you think I am being unfair, by all means complain to the Wiki founder, but I would urge you to prepare your defence thoroughly and be ready to explain why your unnecessary interventions are justified. You could even hear each revolution of the disc expressed as a wobble in the music. I think Peel played real 78s for the Pig's Big 78, but surely the 78s from 1900 would have been far too valuable to place in the hands of a DJ? I imagine the BBC library would have transcribed them to some digital format? --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, MARK LUETCHFORD wrote: > > a real labour of love -many thanks - do we know what format he played the 1900s - presume he pillaged the bbc library for wax cylinders! > > > > > ________________________________ > From: lorcan58 > To: peel@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Sunday, 29 January 2012, 16:47 > Subject: [peel] Re: Peelenium frenzy! > > >   > That's a very fine bit of work.
