Thanks - two challenges here. Did he ever play another Kenny Everett song - he had a penchant for playing comedy records if they tickled his fancy although I can't imagine him playing the appalling Snot Rap or Captain Kremen - although I'm sure someone will know if he did. I alos checked out what record this could be - earliest Kenny Everett release on Discogs is 1968 so that's odd ...
The other is the slightly inaudible bit when he seems to not appreciate Sandy Shaw's entry into the Eurovision and seems to think it hasn't got a chance of winning. Exhibiting his usual great judgement about "popular" music. Ms Shaw was equally disparagingt the other day on desert island discs. However one of my mix tapes does have him playing covers of this song (although not the original) so maybe he changed his mind about the song if not this version? Versions in 81 were by Big Hair and URoy. Interestingly (but only to very sad obsessive like us!) I have just used the search facility on Wiki which revelas he replayed teh Big Hair version again in 1990 in a retro show when he picked his fave tunes from the early 80s. So he definitely forgave the song!
Anyway many many thanks for this aural treat. If anyone does betray us and John and puts this on ebay for personal gain and we find out who they are can we think of a suitable punishment involving pain and sufferring for all eternity as for some paltry pennies they will have betrayed his memory and his legacy. Something which money can not buy.

Wow, historic stuff. Earliest ever Peel in the UK, and the Little Richard cover search comes to an end!
Many thanks to everyone involved in sharing all three recordings.
Cheers,
Steve

The quality is admittedly poor and only 15 minutes long, but represents the earliest recording we have of John on UK radio, even pre-dating the Perfumed Garden.
