Alan Bangs! Blimey!! He was my radio hero back in the 80s. I spent most of that decade in Germany...in the Army y'see...and he used to do some great shows on the Forces network on Saturday and Sunday nights. A true oasis of great music amidst the crap purveyed by most of the 'Proper' BFBS DJs (Bangs did shows on one of the German stations).
I remember listening to Peel on BFBS while I was in Berlin in 1980/ 81. I even taped a few....long gone now, sorry. Joy Division (most of Closer....Dead Souls etc), Stiff Little Fingers (Mr Fire Coal Man), The Fall (of course...Container Drivers...totally wired!), The Cure...Biko by Peter Gabriel...that song about a theatre review of Edward Fox (can't remember the group)...he played all of them. Oh, and he played a Reggae track called "Skanking At The Bank". After that we used to refer to the rather lovely ladies who worked at the Berliner Bank as "The Skank At The Bank"...
Even in 1980 Peel's shows were really popular in Germany. One of the chaps at Berliner Bank (Rheinhardt) used to visit our Pay & Admin Office once a week, and I remember him telling me that he had a friend in England who regularly sent him tapes of Peel's Radio 1 shows, which he would then copy for other friends.
Bloody Hell...that was 31 years ago :-(
Just after that I went to Belize where I worked on the Forces station for 7 months...a tin hut but at least it had air conditioning (90% humidity outside!). I used to have to play all of the tapes we received from London, including 'John Peel's Music'. Naturally we had to send them back after broadcast so they could have other shows taped over them... :-(
Has anyone heard of a Producer chap named Robert Neill? He was sent out from London to 'supervise' the BFBS station at that time. He was a bit of a 'luvvie'...plummy voice, silver hair, cravats and all of that. He told me that he had worked 'extensively' with Peel, and many others. He must have been about 60 at the time (at least!), making him 90-ish now if he's still around (doubtful...it looked as if he enjoyed a tipple or three).

Hello all there.
A few days ago I have offered a BFBS show from the 28th of 1988. Now I have found another show from 1988 on BFBS (or at least about 41 minutes of it). It's pretty good sounding, starts somewhere and ends regularly.
After that (and this might be interesting as well)there's the beginning of ALAN BANGS show Night Flight which lasts for a couple of minutes.
Any response, especially if this show is NEW to the Peel group is pretty much appreciated.

Please enjoy.
Ralf
