[peel] My (not so much a box but more several shelves of) Peel Tapes

601 ---- That is a large number!

If you ever need a hand with digitising I'm happy to help. I bought a
Nakamichi tape deck specifically for the purpose of digitising my own Peel
mixtape collection. It is very good at extracting the best of tapes
recorded on other machines, both due to the 3-head design and the easily
adjustable azimuth and speed. I think it might well be able to do a very
good job with the 1990-1992 tapes - it sounds like the quality is definitely
in there but just needs unlocking.

Hi all

I'm a bit confused here,

Over the last week I've been busy uploading my existing 1990/1991 tapes
which I'd already ripped to Mooo Server/Phil directory

Currently:-

1990 - 12 files

1991 - 51 files - 32 files still uploading.

So why can't I see them in http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Mooo_Server#phil

These files were originally on my server (in case anyone doesn't have
these).

Now I can start to rip the rest of them (I'll start ripping the remainder
this weekend). I've finally put them in date order and all in one place. I
underestimated the number. It now stannds at 601 tapes plus about 20
missing.

Sadly, the 1990-92 tapes were taped on on my nephews Akai tape deck

The 1997 - 2003 were recorded on my Teac which I'm using for digitising.

Anything else was recorded on an Aiwa tape deck.

Hi Phil

Uploading

Most folks are now getting a folder on the Mooo server. There is a folder
there in your name already with a bunch of your earlier shows! If you look
at the Mooo Server page on the wiki you'll see who to contact about getting
a login to upload there, anyone can download with the correct credentials.
User Peel password group.

Files of over 200Mb have been deposited there already, and even the likes of
Mediafire can take 200Mb files on a free account.

Downloading

Mediafire Rapidshare Megaupload etc are easy to download from without an
account, especially using a utility like jDownloader which automates all the
tedious waiting for xx minutes and you can queue up as many downloads as you
like. DAP utility is good and fast for downloading from a server like Mooo
or Diag which only needs a password set once. You can get that utility to
download all links on a page, which is good for the Mooo and Gary's server

Digitising

1) A 2 hour show can be recorded to a 192kbps joint stereo mp3 and come in
at under 200Mb. I've even experimented with 220-260kpbs vbr setting for my
best tapes. I use Audacity to rip, setting the recording level in advance to
avoid clipping, rather than normalising later, which may actually perform
some dynamic compression, and if clipping occurred during the recording
phase, the peaks would already be lost.

2) One thing I've noticed about the earlier tapes in your series, when I was
doing a lot of tracklistings for them, is that quite often the first 45
minutes of a show have been muffled and the second half have been clear, or
vice versa. This may be due to an azimuth mismatch between either the
forward and reverse (if it is an auto reverse deck) or between deck a and
deck b on your multideck. The best recording will come from playing back on
the correct deck, in the correct direction, it should be obvious on
listening which deck a tape was originally recorded on, it should sound much
clearer on the correct one! If it is an entirely different deck, then you
may well have to adjust azimuth on playback. You might also get a better
sound by having the Dolby off on replay.

Though I think some of your later tapes in 1993 did sound very clear indeed!

A benefit of the Mooo server is that the files are dated as they are
uploaded and will make it easy for folks who wish to download and do a
tracklisting on the wiki, without you having to announce each upload on the
group.

At last.

I've finally gotten around to getting back to digitising my 500+ tapes.

Although I contributed my 20 quid to that 1st box of tapes we collectively
bought a few years back which kicked off these various taping projects, I
probably only got around to downloading about 50 shows.

The reason being, I was waiting to get my new server in a satisfactory
state. Hopefully I will also be looking at getting this working in the near
future.

The vast majority of these tapes (about 90+%) are TDK AD C90s and are
complete shows.

Taking the form of :-

Tape 1 = show 1 part 1 of 2

Tape 2 = show 1 part 2 of 2 + show 2 part 1 of 2

Tape 3 = show 2 part 2 of 2 + show 3 part 1 of 2 etc.

I'm planning to stitch the parts together (removing the blank bits where
tape reverses) to end up with complete shows (normalised to minimise
clipping, using Cool Edit Pro 2.0) as 1 file (current bitrate of 44100 bps
gives approx. 100 Mb per 2 hour show. Is this too large a file size?

Mostly these tapes will be digitised using the same tape deck as they were
recorded on (A TEAC twin deck which recorded on both decks).

Will probably manage about 2-3 tapes per evening.

2 Things

1.	Until the issues with my server are resolved, where can I upload
these shows? Is Gary's (Niag) server still available? I don't have an
account with any of these file share sites such as MediaFire or RapidShare
or whatever. Probably the reason I never bothered downloading many shows due
to their limitations.
2.	At present the shows will be completely random as they are in
complete disarray from when I was digging stuff out from when Ken was
finalising his book. This will soon be resolved as "she who must be obeyed"
has instructed me to tidy my study and is well under way, having thrown out
over a dozen bin bags of books, giving me more shelf space to rearrange the
tapes.

Phil

P.S. These shows are from 1987 onwards (about 300 tapes between 1990-2)
