Maybe the death knell sounded for 6 Music might be a bit premature given the incredible pressure I see the BBC is under to keep the station alive and well. I mean, my favorite musical artist is (please don't ridicule me) Duran Duran and they've recently gone on board the Save BBC 6 Music campaign, so I'd say this is a sign the BBC should see that musicians of all varieties of genres and popularities want to see this resource preserved. Anyway, back to this particular story. It's awesome that Tom Ravenscroft is going to get his own 6 Music show and that we're seeing the birth of a new John Peel, which would be most fitting as a sort of partiarchal "handing down the legacy to the son" type thing. And I trust that he'll be offering up a whole boatload of innovative new talent for the youth of today to be clued into. It also tickles me a little knowing Tom's about my age as it's a sign of my generation's newly appointed position of being trendsetters, style-setters, and general role models for youth culture. Wow. We deserve to be told - Power to the People !>> > Hi - several factors, including the fact that I am kept incredibly busy with day job plus DJ gigs plus recording band sessions plus recording a 3 hour monthly show of new music for www.dandelionradio.com. Doing all 4 this week, prior to flying to New York to DJ at the NYC Popfest next week. Several rippers currently have batches of cassettes, which I assume they are in the process of ripping, prior to returning the cassettes to me with copies of the rips. I have a couple of batches ready to send out, catching up a few loose ends from the "400 box" plus the start of the "Lowson box" kindly donated to us. Am waiting until a few more rippers return their current batches, plus I still need to set up a spreadsheet to start cataloguing these new cassettes. Most of our rippers share their files with the group as and when they rip them, but one or two do not - possibly they don't have the upload capability - we never stipulated that rippers should be able to share their own rips direct to the group - merely that the FLAC files get returned to me, with a long term aim of getting them put on some sort of server. So would be grateful if all you rippers out there who have outstanding batches of cassettes could try to get them back to me in the next few weeks, there's plenty more work to do! Cheers! I remember them supporting SPLODENESSABOUNDS at Surrey University about 3 months before this was transmitted & I can honestly say I have never seen a band finish a set so completely covered in gob.. First and foremost, with that amount of material to share, I beg you from the bottom of my heart not to consider the last option!!! Secondly, I must admit that I found zshare very slow and a couple of times it died before completion. Therefore, may I suggest (1) Mediafire (up to 200mb) or (2) Megaupload (over 200 mb)? Both seem to be the free account of choice for uploaders on this list. There is (3) Rapidshare, but that makes one wait before downloading more files, which is fine if you have just one, but a pain in the rear end for multiple files. Alternatively, I have an account at Dropbox into which you can easily put files. If you like, I will send you an invitation, you can send me the files and I will do the rest. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! I tried to drop you a quick line off-list a few days ago but it bounced back. Anyway, yeah, "John Peel's Got Nice Legs" does indeed sound like it could well be Walters at work. Steve in Korea has fleshed out the wiki page a bit and tracked down a show in which was it was played, although Peel says he there he has no idea where it came from: http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Peelers As you mentioned in your email, the jingle was presumably related to Peel playing with the Radio One football team or similar and maybe dates back to the 70s. Other things mentioned in the 1992 show as found in the same clearout at home include the original Undertones demo tape and a recording of Captain Beefheart playing at Frank Freeman's Dancing School back in 1968. Anyone else remember anything about "John Peel's Got Nice Legs"? Thanks again for the file. Great stuff. Message-ID: An on the fly mixtape concentrating on the three complete archive sessions broadcast on this date, but also some intervening tracks. The odd JP link survives most notably the one between the last of the first Smiths session and the first of the second. Very good to excellent FM stereo quality, from a pair of Sony BHF C90s. Listening to the sound of the Smiths first session, it sounds so natural, tight and dynamic, that I am convinced it sounds better than most music on most FM stations these days. There is a pleasing lack of broadcast audio dynamic compression, it really sounds like someone is playing a real drum kit. This is what really marks out this version of "What Difference Does It Make". The slight tempo shifts and hesitations in "Reel Around The Fountain" while probably unintentional, sound fresh natural and exciting. The second Smiths session is OK too but the snare drums are not mic'ed up quite so close, the tonal mix is closer to the album, but you can just visualise the kick bass drum in action as it is so forward in the mix. http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/28_May_1984 Stuart From so_it_goes_2512@...
