I didn't know him, but we talked on the phone for several hours a couple of years ago. I was writing my dissertation on John Peel's remarkable career and Bernie was enormously helpful. He did feel he'd gotten a raw deal from the BBC; but he and John had made peace after having been separated for many years after Bernie's forced removal from "Top Gear." He is as responsible as anyone for the BBC's remarkable trove of live, in-studio recordings from the 1960's and it cost him, according to him. I've been using one recently which records to SD card, here's the results so far: Ravenscroft's 1st 2 shows 20100604 and 20100611 (shared by Pad also) and filling in for Robinson 20100606 and 20100607 all broadcast/recorded as 128kbit mp2 stereo Thanks to all the posters/sharers of late, Dan --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, Richard Fewster wrote: > > Hi all, > > I trust many of you will have heard Our Tom's debut Friday night shows on > 6Music. I am giving a paper early next month at an academic conference on radio and TV archiving, in Madison, WI, USA, all about what I believe is the extraordinary phenomenon of Peel tape documenting and sharing online that has grown exponentially in the past few years. So I need evidence from the people doing it or involved in it: you. I have created a little survey on survey monkey which I'd really appreciate if as many of you as could might fill in. I've just finished a dummy test run with the help of Stu, Rocker, Steve, Steve and Phil, which revealed some structural glitches which, with their and my missus's help, I think I have now fixed, so it's ready to roll. It should not take more than ten minutes to do. You just tick the boxes. But there is a blank final "Any other comments?" box too. And you can always email me off list privately, or post any other responses or reflections prompted by it, here, I suppose. It's in 4 sections. At least half the questions are just about listening to Peel, so please feel free to forward it to anyone you know off-list, via facebook etc, who was a Peel listener at some point, but not necessarily active here. If that gives a broader spread of response it may also help put the views of those of us here assembled who are more committed in a more balanced context anyway. Whatever, enough waffling, here's the link below. Go to it, please. You can go back and redo question or sections as you go through it, but only submit one completed response. I am hoping for 100 responses by 4 July! Thanks, and let me know what you think, > > ken > > http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HTP28ZD > From ken_garner@... Sat Jun 19 16:50:21 2010 From: ken_garner@... Message-ID: Many thanks to the many of you who must have completed my Peel Listeners' survey already, for my research paper, since I posted it here at the link below last Saturday: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HTP28ZD I am amazed that I have 176 responses already, of whom almost 82% completed the entire survey: thanks again. I was imagining I might get 50 or so in the first week, so this is just sensational. If you have not yet taken it, please do so this week if you can find me 10 minutes, I'd really appreciate it: as one of my colleagues at work said, it would be pretty impressive to get 200 or even 250. And if you have taken it, please facebook / twitter / email / blog / special interest online group etc the link on, to any of your acquaintance outside this group who you think might consider it, if they were once Peel listeners too. I am also enormously appreciative of the 49 individual final comments people have made at the end, many of which are so pertinent and illuminating I will be quoting them in my paper, anonymously of course. I have also learned that no survey is perfect: - i should have included Eire as one of the countries in section 1 - i should have included a greater range of occupations on page 1 - and question 6 on page 3, option 1 should ideally have read not "one or two tapes" but "a few/less than 20". You can't change these things mid-survey but I do not think any of these are so central as to undermine the main thrust of the survey and findings. One or two people have hinted the final opinion questions are worded to generally push you one way or the other: that's the idea. The interesting thing is how many do this, relative for plumping for the middle option. Thre are already some interesting trends here So thanks for doing it, for getting round to it now if you can, and forwarding onwards if you have! cheers ken From paul@... I'm always remiss about thanking people for uploads, and feel quite rightly guilty about it. A particular reason for writing, though: it was a long time ago, and my memory is patchy, but I *think* I was in the studio on the 29th of January 1985. I could be utterly wrong, even to the year; but it fits in with going to see New Order the previous night, and I have a vague memory of the Chameleons session, and the link with the Elmore James intro, which we were talking about in the studio. (On the other hand, the other session was by the Popticians, which I probably would have remembered.) I'm rather ashamed to say that at this distance, I'd remember the links better than the music!
