Just back from Womad - John Peel credited with popularising world music amiongst
the late 70's/80s audiences in the programme notes about Kanda Bongo Man. Rolf
Harris claimed similar on stage with Sun A Rise being first world music chart
entry in 1962! Obviously Andy kershaw developed the range and scope of all
our tastes ..
Had a storming time - Horace Andy skylarked and Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars
doing Slavery Days by Burning Spear. Toumast. Rango. Stonoway. Kanda Bongo Man.
Imelda May. A bavarian band with oompah! Inuit throat music. A group from
Tajikstan - the list goes on and on. If you haven't been you shoudl consider it
especially if you have young kids/grandkids.
Without John Peel and Andy Kershaw (sorry - Rolf although I really did enjoy
seeing him - but a shame he didn't do the Court of King Caractacus) I and my
children would not have been there - and I suspect the same goes for many.
Respect and thanks - I will search this database for all its joy.,
Mark
