Trouble is, you can never quite replicate the FM sound by tweaking an AM
recording, as there is a sharp drop off above 5kHz and virtually no signal
above 8kHz. I find the tone equalisation after the fact can help
subjectively up to a point, as it can compensate for the start of the
frequency roll-off, and for those of us with "middle aged" hearing it may
well be FM like. But as FM actually has a frequency response up to 15kHZ
there is clearly an awful lot of information which is irretrievably lost.

The same applies to poorly adjusted playback azimuth and inaccurate Dolby
tracking! Better to get these sorted out first before resorting to EQ.

I don't believe the hiss will make the sound crisper, hiss is after all just
noise, not signal.

Just my opinion of course..

Hmm, interesting. When I ripped this I played around with the top end
myself. Personally I like a bit of hiss, especially if it makes the
recording sound a bit crisper. But I decided to present the recording pretty
much as it is. I might tweak the next one though, if people prefer a more
trebly listen.

I'm away this weekend, so it will probably be midweek when the next one is
ready.

Hi Mate.
In Audacity, use the 'equalisation' function. I started to raise the line
(from zero) at 1kHz. At 3kHz the line was about 75% up, towards the top ;
from there I took the line right up to the max (24) at the extreme right.
The result is to really crank up the treble - this may not be to everyone's
taste but I think it makes it sound more FM-like, an improvement. Download
the remaster below ...
Thanks again to Doc Mango for the original !

hope folk are enjoying the BFBS shows, because the feedback hasn't been
consistent, and Carsten has sent me an awful lot of them. Please let me know
if there's continued interest, and I'll keep on doing them.
