I am happy to get ripping too, in between my own mixtape efforts. Some degree of co-ordination might be required as there are a few collections now getting ripped in this era (iSector, 500 Box, and I remember another posting recently on the list about a collection). To my ears the 500 Box and iSector shows sound better than many of the existing 1990/1991 shows out there and if the rippers have enough stamina after filling in the true gaps in the calendar, then sound upgrades could be the next thing to tackle. Well, after The Fall's "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" perhaps. Going forward, I think I have mentioned here that in the 90's I had a friend in London who would record Peel shows for me, and send the cassettes back to me in Atlanta... this was from maybe 91-99. She worked at the CNN office off Tottenham Ct Rd and was in charge of recording feeds anyway - exactly the dependable sort of person you'd want. (All the cassettes begin exactly 90 seconds before the show starts etc.) Anyway I dont know how many there are, at least 100, maybe 200. And then I've another 30-50 half hr shortwave shows. So looking down the road, when you (or ya'll as we say round here) get through the 400 box, you are welcome to the "Tom Roche Box," so to speak. I don't have time to rip them, so I'd be happy to Fed-Ex them over to Phil or Martin and let them distribute the task. Oh and these are mostly 100 min cassettes and not 90's, a bonus. Amazing to think that someday one can carry around 3 decades of John's shows on a little pocket drive.... OT: The film I spent the last 5 months editing in New Orleans, "The Big Uneasy" will show at The Big Chill Festival sometime next weekend, with Harry Shearer there to introduce it. It will show in London in September sometime, will advise. I don't really know what I'm doing so forgive me if the link doesn't work. The file (should the link work) is about 26 mins in length and 35mb and contains what I used to call "Peelers", basically Peel's amusing comments and asides, together with extended bits of DJ chat with Andy Kershaw. They date from the time his and Andy's shows followed each other (late 1980's early 90's at a guess). I used to make compilations from the shows I recorded and would fill up the end bits of the tape with these snippets. Contains details of the legendary visit to see Simon bates in panto. No, really. I normally copy my track listings from my spreadsheet, which was created many years ago, from my handwritten database of recorded songs. Sometimes the spellings were inaccurate, I just wrote down what I thought JP had said. When I wikify these tapes now, I put them through discogs to get full record label details and often realise at that point that I got the spelling wrong. Obviously I forgot to double check the spellings of the session tracks on this occasion! BUT - I notice Discogs spells the track Indoitasei so I am convinced that 'Ndoita Sei?' comes from the session notes, as that spelling has been picked up both by Ken and by the BBC web team, and the question mark must have originated from the session engineers at the time, before True Jit was released and the true spelling became apparent. Incidentally on my spreadsheet and handwritten notes I had laboured for 24 years under the delusion that track 16 on my mixtape http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Mostly_Peel_Spring_1986 was a ditty named "Seven Out Of Ten" by the combo known as "The Rochdale Judge" .... I don't suppose you have listened to my February 1986 compilation http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Peel_February_1986 as the 4th track on that I have not been able to identify - it sounds very Electric Prunesy and I feel it is one that I should know as it seems to be one of those 60s pebbly garage standards? I don't really know what I'm doing so forgive me if the link doesn't work. The file (should the link work) is about 26 mins in length and 35mb and contains what I used to call "Peelers", basically Peel's amusing comments and asides, together with extended bits of DJ chat with Andy Kershaw. They date from the time his and Andy's shows followed each other (late 1980's early 90's at a guess). I used to make compilations from the shows I recorded and would fill up the end bits of the tape with these snippets. Contains details of the legendary visit to see Simon bates in panto. No, really. I'm not as old as martinw it would seem, though my memory is clearly dulled more than his, so how I could have set up a group I wasn't a member of is a bit of a mystery... anyway, the history goes roughly like this, for those interested: I had started a Peel tape chain in the mid-90s and interviewed John a couple of times I think, and for whatever reason decided that a usenet group (of the form alt.music.peel) would be useful - for younger readers, the usergroups were, I suppose, the old web version of yahoogroups, or even forums. The usenet people were very snotty, deeming the Peel 'genre' of music to be already covered elsewhere. A mailing list was something that you needed to have a server to run - uk-indie, grunge-l and chugchanga were a few of the mailing lists that existed, maintained by people with technical skills and importantly, computing firepower. But around that time, I think that egroups started up offering easy- to-manage mailing lists. So I set up the Peel list. At that time mp3s didn't exist, and Peel himself was happily still with us, so the traffic was more about discussion of last night's show and what have you. Yahoo bought over egroups at some point, and then when John left us and technology advanced, the traffic turned more to digitising old shows and membership obviously increased - I'd not realised quite how large the numbers were though! I haven't got involved with ripping tapes as the only ones I have left (out of maybe hundreds that entered the US via the Adobe mailroom in Seattle) are F50s already very well covered by the members here. Plus all my spare time is spent trying to run www.isthismusic.com and www.jockrock.org, to varying levels of competence). DJ SHOWCASE – MARK CUNLIFFE: Mark Cunliffe has contributed shows to Dandelion Radio every month since he joined us in December 2007. Right now, he's enjoying playing the fruits of a recent world music festival in London's Victoria Park. If you ever get chance to see London based Zimbabwean outfit Harare play live, he suggests you grab the opportunity with both hands! Mark's really feeling the vibe coming out of America's west coast at the moment, telling us "that post hip-hop sound being peddled at the moment is getting right under my skin…in a good way!" Mark's also loving the UK Funky vibe: "Bassline and Funky emerged in tandem, Bassline emanating in the north from Sheffield, and Funky down in the south: Kode9 is getting in on the act having just released a really cool single by Ill Blu on Hyperdub - go check!" Mark also told us a little bit about his non-radio activities: "All this music lark happens in the evenings and weekends. By weekday I'm an assistant in a Neuro Physiotherapy Department. I love my job, I love my radio…..pretty cool eh?!" Back on the subject of his shows, he told us "I'm in the middle of trying to sort out getting the Nico-esque Ruth Bellamy to record some material that might just be exclusive to me if I'm very lucky. It will happen, it's just a question of when… Nice one Ruth!" To find out more about Mark at our website, visit www.dandelionradio.com/markc. The first is a mixture from Nov/Dec 1987 containing some hip hop / rap, some Bulgarian folk (not the usual Voix Bulgares stuff) and a few JP links. SQ is portable mini-ghetto blaster but quite acceptable FM stereo. http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Peel_Late_1987 The next tape is mainly from mid January and contains some JP links, one of Renegade Soundwave's early best, some X Sample and a few random session tracks. http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Peel_January_1988 I was back at home for the next tape, so it was recorded on the home system, so SQ is very good FM stereo. Message-ID: Since I discovered the Peel Wiki site last year I've been going through the available shows from 1979-80 hoping that I could pinpoint the time I first started listening to Peel. The compilation tapes I have start in August 1980 but I know I was listening before then, albeit intermittently. My first recollection of Peel is tuning in as a 15 year old on the recommendation of a school friend and hearing him back announce a track with the words "well that one certainly mentions Marlon Brando..." I have to say I was a little confused (and intimidated) by what was going on. Here was this DJ who sounded like no other DJ I'd ever heard, playing an extremely strange selection of tracks, moving from the UK Subs to Prince Far I to Little Feat without any comment on the seeming (to me) incongruity of playing this stuff side by side. I have to admit that I don't think I tuned again for a good few months and have always been a bit embarrassed by the fact. Anyway, back to the sort-of-pointless search; by last night I had got to the track listing for 28 June 1979 and low and behold someone had taken the trouble to make a note that JP does an impression of Marlon Brando during the show. Sure enough, after playing Neil Young's Pocahontas , Peely states "surely the only mention in popular song of Marlon Brando...". I assume what then happened is that listeners wrote in with examples to prove him wrong and these were then played in subsequent programmes; when I first tuned in I must have caught the end of one of those tracks. Well, it was a eureka moment for me and I spent the rest of the evening in the warm glow of nostalgia. Many thanks to the original recorder, the ripper (that can't be right can it?) and the wiki editor. Cheers, Mark. From ford.alan@... Thu Aug 19 22:17:06 2010 From: ford.alan@... In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Just the sort of pointless reminiscing I like to read about on here - Thanks for posting Mr Maudlin! I had a similar feeling a while back when I worked out that my first Peel moment was about 10 to 12 on 21 December 1982.I heard my favourite band (at the time, SLF)as I was going through the radio dial. I listened the following night and they were on again! I've still got the crackly tape with a few snippets of the 23rd Dec programme, two of those tracks heard for the first time then (Dead Popstars and Another Girl) are still in my alltime favourites now. I didn't miss a Festive Fifty show after that, you can guess how upset I was in 1991 (and how happy in 1993 and 1999!) Thanks also to Stuart McHugh for his post a few threads back describing the history of this site - always interesting to know how things developed. Many thanks for kicking it off. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Can¹t remember my first listen, but think it was probably around Œ75, and I definitely did the listening under the bed clothes thing at school. I do know the first shows I taped; it was a series of pre-recorded shows that Peel made to broadcast whilst he was away on holiday, each of which showcased the work of a particular band and it¹s offshoots. There was Cream, the Stones, Roxy Music and Soft Machine that I can remember and I recorded them all onto those ghastly green Boots C120¹s that invariably snapped after a few plays. The Roxy tape survived the longest, a good 20 years, though it sounded pretty awful. Sadly I have none of them now. I also remember recording my first Festive Fifty with my entire family present, post Christmas dinner, them watching the telly, and me listening to Peel via headphones. At some point I accidentally nudged the dial and lost the signal, causing me to let loose a torrent of oaths, before suddenly remembering where I was! My sisters were more amused than my parents... Some basic data from the findings so far (sneak preview for your eyes only), unlikely now to be moderated much statistically by any latecomers: 903 respondents, 79% completion; almost 50% aged 35-45, and 84% male; 83% british; 75% college educated or above (aren't we an over-educated bunch?); and only 4% (30 persons) have ripped more than 20 shows, so, as we here knew, the archiving projects online are effectively led and executed by a hard core minority! The problem is that adding a direct link to the Mooo (as Stuart found out some time back) results in rejection as spam by the Wiki. The Mooo is a free/dynamic DNS service which uses an index that needs to be rebuilt after new files are added (I'm quoting from the noble brbr here, since it's all Greek to me), and until it does so I can't add a direct link and have to point you to the page I wrote with instructions on its location. However, enough time has passed and I've now added the direct link to the page, which uses a workaround via another server. In future, if there is a link to the Wiki instructions page, use the browser link (http://www.peel.mooo.com/peelgroup/) that Mike mentioned and navigate from there. If there is no location (i.e. steve/BFBS), you can go ahead and download directly by clicking the link. Hope this makes sense, and sorry for any confusion caused. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I first got into Peel around 1970, becoming a serious listener in '71 and recorded one hell of a lot of Peel sessions from there through to '76 in part or whole, mostly part. I think I must have listened to most broadcasts between those years, then sporadically for the rest of the seventies. Also listened to many of the "In Concert" broadcasts, and still have the recording of the Pink Floyd one from '71 with Peel's legendary intro. I also listened religiously to all the other Sounds of The Seventies progs esp Mike Harding and Bob Harris, less so Drummond and Black. I must have picked up a lot of his mannerisms as I still get described as the "John Peel of Radio North Angus", a radio station up here in Scotland's east coast (I moved up here 16 years ago) where I do a weekly 150 minute programme devoted entirely to unsigned bands (much in the spirit Of Peel, arguably). In fact, I did one show where I wanted to pay homage to Peel and actually got permission to use bits of his intros from Tom, indirectly. If you are mildly curious about what I play - and it's mostly unsigned Scottish acts - the playlists are at www.deadearnest.btintenet.co.uk/rna.htm The spirit lives on... A lot of the previously available 1991-1993 shows are muffled on one side, they tend to be labelled part 1 and part 2, I think possibly they are the ones referred to in Ken's book. ISector probably also has a bunch of sound upgrades for these but has been concentrating on filling in the complete gaps before tackling the upgrades. I believe Mr Lowmans tapes will also cover that era, and what with a few Box 500 shows to come, who knows, we might even complete 1992!
