Since the 3 they did broadcast were 18 minutes long and there was still another track a 5th track seems very improbable The Jensen session was But Can You Dance To it/The Shape Of Things To Come /One World/The Kill I've got 10 minutes of the session and the first track is One World. After that I can't even work how many songs there are let alone the titles. It's obviously not the whole session martinw From saipanda@... Fri Apr 2 18:47:25 2010 From: saipanda@... There's other stuff up there but i'll sporadically be adding Peel-based things either from the tapes or that i've downloaded from other sources. Inside is an article written by David Hepworth, entitled "Why There'll Never Be Another Peel: The Taming Of Rock Radio". It starts off my echoing some of the comments made on here about Peel's name being dragged into the 6 Music axeing debate, then goes on to examine his career and look at the state of radio today. It's an interesting read. Dr Mango From stuart@... Mon Apr 12 10:38:14 2010 From: stuart@... On that tack, I'm pretty sure John once 'did' a cruise, probably cross-atlantic as a way to get him to New York without having to fly - it was if I recall right one of those big boats with cinemas, sops, and a lecture theatre, where he'd doubtless have delivered lectures on music and life alongside the likes of Michael Parkinson and Joan Bakewell (probably). If I didn't dream this, it'd have been a bit later on, when the cruise liner audience would have heard of him via his non-Radio One shows. Well, I've just been sent a copy of the finished product on Hux, a 2CD set in a card slipcase with 20 page booklet. It's a delight from beginning to end. Ron has worked wonders, sound quality-wise, with the 'raw materials' at his disposal. Peel makes a couple of appearances, firstly introducing Bridget's session debut on Night Ride in '68 (taped by BSJ herself on her kitchen table). Peel's enthusiasm for her music is obvious, almost in over-the-top fashion for him ;-) He also pops up when he introduces BSJ's In Concert set from May 1975 (a rare appearance for him on In Concert by that stage), contributing an amusing anecdote about 'sleeping' with BSJ. The 4 BSJ tracks from the JP Presents Top Gear 1969 lp are included, as are 3 tracks from a Jan '76 Top Gear session. "The Present Song/ Pig & Peel" from an August '74 Top Gear session concludes the collection. I know that the 'noise-mongers' among you won't be interested in this, but Peel called BSJ's music "Balm for the ears", and so it is :-) PS--Kevin Ayers fans/ completists should note that he, (and David Bedford & Mike Oldfield) appear on several tracks from a Jan '71 In Concert. Session tracks from Clock DVA, Pink Industry. Highlights include an early soukous track with an amusing wrong speed error by JP, Bedward the Flying Preacher and a couple of unknown tracks, at least one of which I have spent a quarter of a century trying to identify. (though I have managed to find time to do other stuff too). A few JP links intact! Also from October 1983, a session track each from Tools You Can Trust and Gene Loves Jezebel, in fairly good mono FM. The GLJ is the missing track from the October session on my earlier mixtape, I must have been short of tapes when I went back to uni and just recorded where there were gaps at the end of my September tapes. Hope this brings enjoyment to some.... Stuart http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Peel_Early_Sep_1983 From stuartb@... Fri Apr 16 02:53:07 2010 From: stuartb@... I've just started to share mine, I did make a note at the time of most of the tracks but some remain unidentified and dating the shows is quite labour intensive! But there's a whole community out there willing to help out. It's pretty rewarding to be able to share something that someone has been searching for for years. Mediafire is a good starting point for uploading shows, it's fast to download and upload, it takes 200Mb files and there is no limit to file space. Interestingly I also used a VHS hifi recorder to tape entire shows and then record onto cassettes. At least then if you decided you liked something half way through the track you could go back and tape the whole thing. The first show of the 1994 FF is also way incomplete, if you or anybody 'happens' to have that lying around. Along with Ray's epochal series, we're well on the way to a complete series, which would have been considerably enhanced if the person who promised me recordings of the 1976 FF a year ago had come through instead of stringing me along for a year (they know who they are). I also appreciate the thanks that have been coming in for uploads recently: it means a lot. And while we're on the subject, great mixtape uploads, Stuart! From michael.capewell@... I have a full 2 hour broadcast including sessions from 28th December but only 1h:45m of 21st December, and 1h:30m of 29th December so hopefully you may have the first parts that I missed to maybe get 3 full shows. My 22nd December and 27th December are just the FF countdown, as available elsewhere. Any more where these came from, perchance? As far as the 1983 F50 goes: 21st December I have about half of the session part of the show in better SQ than what is currently available, namely the Cocteau Twins, Echo And The Bunnymen and Xmal Deutschland sessions. It is probably worth sharing that tape. I also have edited highlights of the chart rundown, but not necessarily in better quality than the full chart rundown already available so I don't think I will bother with that. 28th December I have the chart rundown in very good quality, will share if I think it is better than what is currently available 29th December Highlights only of the chart rundown so will not share I would have thought judging from your June 1983 shows that what you have of the 21st Dec show will be of far better quality than what has previously been shared. It would be great if you could share that, and I will see what is missing that I might have and we can maybe get nearly a whole show between us in excellent quality. Also, I don't think the session parts of the 28th and 29th have been shared before so would be fantastic if you could get round to sharing. The March broadcast date came from a friend who worked at the BBC, but it's quite possible that this was a repeat, or an incorrect date. I have a recording of excerpts from the broadcast, and at the end of the BJH bit, Peel says, "Must do more of that in 1977, if we last that long", which would certainly imply that 14th December, 1976 is more likely, and I'm happy to change the listing on our web site on that basis. The recording date of 19th October, 1976, at Hammersmith Odeon, is pretty much beyond doubt. Now, one of the two official BJH websites has a list of BJH concert recordings and identifies this show as having been recorded on 19 October 1976 and "broadcast by John Peel" on 14 March 1977, but therein lies the rub, because according to the "Shows" listing in Ken's book, on that date John featured tracks from the "Best of" Barclay James Harvest LP. The show was only an hour long at that time and I wouldn't have thought he'd have had time for the live concert recording as well; also I have very good reason to believe that my recording of "Poke Street Rag" dates from either January or February 1977 and "Crazy City" from no later than 5 March 1977. I can't imagine that Fluff (avowed BJH fan though he was) would have broadcast excerpts from this concert before its official first transmission - that never seems to have been the practice with the repeated session tracks - and so the question arises: is the quoted first broadcast date for the BJH show of 14 March 1977 correct? > > Confusion is worse compounded by the fact that Ken also has Peel featuring tracks from the "Best of" BJH LP in his show on 14 December 1976. To my way of thinking, that date seems a much more likely one for the broadcast of the live concert - two months after recording, rather than March, a whole three months later again, and I can't help thinking that somewhere along the line 14 December and 14 March have got mixed up (probably by the BJH webmasters). Can you clarify from your records, Ken, and confirm the exact date that the BJH concert was broadcast? > From deadearnest@... Sun Apr 25 13:12:25 2010 From: deadearnest@... (Stuart) Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2010 13:03:34 -0000 Subject: 5th June 1984 In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Hi Karl There aren't many shows available from the mid 1980s and the ones I've been posting are the first available for most of these dates. If you go to the show date in question at the wiki for example http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/05_June_1984 then if there is only one file link then that is the first time that anything has been available for that date. You can also go into the History of the page and find out when it was first created, and by who, normally pages are only created once there is something to download for that show. I only pressed the record button when I liked the sound of the start of something, or I knew from the intro that I would want to keep it. Most of my tapes are therefore highlights, or mixtapes, made at the time, not from later online shows! I will in general upload only material not already available, unless the quality of my recording is better. You'll see from the Box 400 page http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/400_Box_(tapes ) that there are many shows which have been sent and presumably ripped but have not yet been shared online. The ones I have down against my name that were not ripped are ones that proved to be gummed up with mould and would not play. SO yes we've reached the end of the 400 box in terms of packaging and sending out to rippers but far from the stage of getting all the resulting rips put online. Hint Hint....
