I actually recorded the 3 hour show through my digibox last year, onto two Minidiscs; I got most of the show on the first airing, then got the third hour of the show from the repeat. I fully intended to extract them and knit the two together. I think the bitrate through the digibox is 160 kbps, so the quality should be a bit better than the other rip. A job for tomorrow... At least the Peelenium wasn't in the last 50 minutes, although as the records get longer as the century goes on you find that the tape flips across one of the songs more often from here onwards. Listening to that mp3 today it sounded very tinny/echoey, although I didn't notice at the time. I'm pretty sure it's 128kbps, I'll have a listen to the wav to see if its the same there and try ripping again if I can get a better mp3 version. They both seem to be of the dark tortured synth genre and I can still see what appealed to JP and made me hit the record button at the time. The first file may well be called "Come On Yvonne" and the second "Fantasy" or "it's a rumble". Anyway I hope that even if no-one can identify the tracks that they get a wider audience and maybe you'll like them as much as me! (colin bray) Date: Sat, 5 Sep 2009 22:19:59 +0000 Subject: 500 Box: Update Message-ID: Dear friends, I thought it was time an update was sent out on the 500 Box, things having stalled for a while until Steve's upload of today. Briefly, the 500 Box actually contains just over 540 tapes dating from 1988 to 2004. Very few shows exist pre-1992 and these have now been digitised. Every year in the period 1992-2004 is well-represented except 2002. At the latest estimate the box will eventually contribute 204 complete or partial shows not otherwise available online. The strongest period is 1994-1996 with several dozen previously unavailable shows for each of those years. I had hoped to include the spreadsheet of these shows as an attachment but suffered an Excel meltdown earlier this evening that brought tears to my eyes and despair to my soul - that will now follow at a later date. Shows should now appear fairly regularly. I have recently acquired the ability to rip shows directly and the fine Steve Teenage Kicks will continue to edit, write wiki entries and post the shows. From now on we intend to move through the Box in chronological order. Thank you to everybody who posts shows, through them I've continued to discover music that continues to astonish and delight. Best wishes, Colin. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail® is up to 70% faster. Just last week on the road I commanded my Ipod to play a random show (It happened to be a Radio Eins broadcast from 23rd Oct 2003) and was totally blowm away by the first track, by Hellfish. Would never have found that in the infinite sea that is Spotify without the great man's divining powers.. It's hard to accept that there are possibly some shows lost forever, there must be so many out there who have long forgotten shows and fragments of shows on tapes up in lofts/attics/sheds...... I consider myself an absolute Peel fanatic yet have only discovered the Mailing List and Wikia in the last few weeks so there must be a lot more like me out there! So that should give us hope. All the music in the world is a much less valuable cultural artefact than a subset distilled through the unrivalled selective powers off our hero. Planning to upload a lot of my recorded tracks and sessions from the 80s and 90s but unfortunately do not have many (if indeed any) complete shows ... but will do what I can for the cause. --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, colin bray wrote: > > > > Thank you to everybody who posts shows, through them I've continued to discover music that continues to astonish and delight. > > > > Best wishes, > > > > Colin. This time I've upgraded the uni-directional Saisho walkman to a slightly more contemporary Panasonic soft touch walkman, there is still quite a bit of flutter on the tapes but there is clarity. Will try to sort out the issue before creating proper mixtapes, don't know if the flutter has developed on the tapes or I should just try a better playback deck. Anyway I've speculatively named the tracks based on their lyrics: 1. At the End of the Day. Moody darksynth. 2. The Art of Love. Melancholy darksynth. 3. Sleeping Dogs. To be honest that is about the only line in the track. It's a wonderfully echo-ey dubby dancehall which makes me think of Lee Perry or Prince Far I, think the vocal is more like Perry. If anyone's interested in sessions of that era then I have such gems as the Nightingales, Here's Johnny, Helen and the Horns, Room 101, Gene Loves Jezebel, Peter and Sophie JOhnson, Zerra one, Portion Control, Marc Riley and the Creepers, and many more. If you download an mp3 and the download is interrupted, you get a shortened file, which you may not notice is incomplete until you come to listen all the way through it. For this reason I prefer downloading Zips, even if the filesize is not actually any smaller than the original mp3. That's my take on it, anyway! You'd think by now they'd've improved the software so it actually told you the thing had hung - or even restarted automatically when the connection could be remade - can't be too difficult, can it! I use DAP for most of my downloads and yes occasionally the odd mp3 download will interrupt, but then stop, this is normally when I've exceeded a download limit on these file storage sites. Resume is shown as unavailable. The problem with zip files is a strange one, I can download the same zip several times, but the extract can fail at a different (but repeatable) point for each version of the zip file. Yet compare the file sizes and they're identical to the nearest byte. I think there is either corruption on my line or on O2's broadband (I've heard of that before) and while the byte size is not affected, then the checksums must not be correct and cause errors while extracting. IN an mp3 file then I suppose unless the incorrect bytes are related to file headers then they will be inaudible glitches in the audio. When I download from my alternative location on Sky Broadband I don't seem to get those corrupt zips. From martinw@... Tue Sep 8 09:35:07 2009 From: martinw@... A bit of a mix including a few partial shows from 1987-1991 plus a lot of new 1996 and 1997 shows and quite a few 2003 gaps filled in. All told the new set totals 93 complete or partial currently unavailable shows which means the Box will eventually provide 297 new partial or complete shows. It'll take quite a while but Steve and myself will continue working to make them available. I'm still finishing the spreadsheet but will make it available on the wiki when ready. Cheers all, and happy listening. Colin. _________________________________________________________________ Ready for Fall shows? Well, this morning he delivered the tapes to me - thanks, Steve - there looks to be at least 500 cassettes, with many full shows from the early 90s, plus many tapes compiled from shows in the late 80s, which may or may not turn out have much of Peel's links on them! My plan is to move onto this collection once the 400 box is completed - there are currently several batches of the 400 box out with the rippers, and I have the final 3 batches to send out in the next few weeks. If anyone else UK-based is interested in becoming a ripper - all you need is a decent cassette deck, a recording system with analogue to digital capability (eg a Mac, a PC, or a separate recorder), and time which you can spare for the project! - message me offlist. Thanks to everyone who contributed in 2008 we have sufficient funds to cover the remainder of the 400 box - I send each batch out by special delivery, and include a prepaid special delivery envelope so the ripper can return the tapes with the digitized files to me. When we start on this next project I will be seeking more contributions, probably in a few weeks. When I get time I will get the basic info for the tapes (as far as can be ascertained from the sleeve inserts and labels) onto a new spreadsheet. Cheers! Rocker From colinbray@... I wasn't in the UK at the time, so missed out on "The Search" and have since been a bit puzzled by the occasional references to it that I've heard in assorted shows and mixtapes kindly shared by various people. Would be most excellent if Andrew could see his way to sharing his wellworn C90s at some stage. Current stream of 1999 wonders with added Peelenium is much appreciated right now, though. On another point, I always think it's a lot nicer to remember people on their birthdays, as a happy occasion, and Peel certainly didn't keep his a secret. Think I would have chosen Peel Day as 30 August rather than some nebulous point in the second half of October. Bit late to change now, though, despite the fact that no one actually knows when it's supposed to be on any given year. Just a thought. They doubled it some months ago, but many of their info pages still say 100 MB. I read that they had increased it, can't be bothered to find you a source to cite, but I've uploaded files quite a lot bigger than 100 MB with no problem. I think the user interface for downloaders is much simpler and easier in Mediafire than Megaupload. For example, it doesn't divert you onto pages where it looks like you've got to pay something, etc. The first few times I tried downloading from Megaupload, I found it so confusing and frustrating that I nearly gave up after a few attempts; you don't get that with Mediafire. Yes, you're right, the EJ was a Wednesday show, and from what I can see, it was never repeated, so I'm not holding out much hope for that. As I said, a long shot: in fact, one writer about the other session on that CD thinks that the only reason they put the DLT Sunday show session out was because the masters for the first session were 'lost'. Or perhaps they're in some collector's hands, because in one of the shows put up by B, John talks about the session tapes, and says that originally the BBC was only allowed to keep them for three months after transmission as part of the contract with the artist, and after this time had elapsed were often put in a skip outside and people helped themselves to what they wanted, which is pretty incredible. Can you confirm the truth of this, Ken? I've just noticed that, as I have a mediafire account, I can select Eddie's shared files and automatically transfer them into my own account for d/loading later. That's a pretty useful utility, from my point of view. Cheers...Jimmy From eddie.duffy@... Tue Sep 29 13:27:02 2009 From: eddie.duffy@... However, it seems that all you need to do is to concatenate all five files together in order to create a single bog-standard, zip file. If you're running Linux (and maybe OS X?), this can be done very simply with the cat command, but in Windows, do the following: 1. From an Explorer window, create a new file called Autobahn.txt in the same directory as the five downloaded files. 2. Double-click on Autobahn.txt and paste the following line into it: copy /b Travels*.zip.??? Autobahn.zip 3. Save and close Autobahn.txt. 4. Rename Autobahn.txt to Autobahn.bat. If you get a warning, confirm that you wish to proceed. 5. Double-click on Autobahn.bat. A DOS window should fire up and start processing. 6. When the window closes, you should have a new file called Autobahn.zip, which you should be able to open with Winzip, 7-Zip or any similar program. The 400 Box rip has about 15 minutes extra from the start of the show that you are missing and cuts out during the final Cure session track. I'll add your extra footage to the 400 Box rip at the end to make the longest version of the show possible, but leave the links to your original rip on the Wiki if people want them Cheers Rob > --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, "Stuart" wrote: > > > > 91 minutes of 2 hour show, please see Wikia > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > Yahoo! If so then it must be too much bass boost in audacity. If not then I just have the audacity input levels too high! the mono tape recorder it was recorded from had automatic level control but usually this just reduced level if it was too high and distorting, it didn't pump the recording level like some. --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, robf wrote: > > By coincidence I was ripping the version of this show from the 400 Box today > > Your version has slightly better reception quality I think, but the mp3 clips like crazy. > > > Cheers > Rob > From philip.gh@...
