Also forgot before to give a big shout to Adam in Turkey for setting the wiki up in the first place. Yeah, Pad, I had the same worry about the wiki for a while, particularly given the concern that someone might notice that there seems to be a certain amount of links to files of dubious copyright origins on there. In fact, it's hard to imagine this won't happen at some stage. Another dread possibility is of course Wikia going belly up at some stage, as you say. But panic not! First thing is that you can download the whole site as a a single file for backup to prepare for future disasters (I do this every week or two). Go to the following page and check out how to do this and please feel free to make your own backups (in case of earthquakes in Tokyo or something): http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Statistics It's also possible to export the whole thing to another wiki site, so the backup can be used to do this if there's a sudden disaster. Anyway, all the information so far won't suddenly vanish completely and can continue to be used one way or another. Also, at some point, some alternative database may be set up with all kinds of wonder features the wiki doesn't have - but this would be able to make use of all the data that's currently going up on the wiki. One alternative that I've been thinking about recently is to adjust the structure of the date pages of the wiki, essentially by taking out the download links, sticking these all in a separate file and uploading this to Google Docs or somewhere else altogether, and/or the files section of the mailing list home page at Yahoo (for additional backup). Links updates could then be done via the Google Docs site, leaving that open to all editors (as the wiki is), with the wiki itself used for all other Peel reference stuff (including tracklistings, show writeups, artist pages, etc). It would be a bit of work to set up, given the amount of wiki pages with download links at present, but I think it might have advantages in the long term for the wiki site itself. To an extent, I've been happy enough remaining kind of "underground" in terms of not linking to assorted Peel-related social networking things, etc (including the main Wikipedia site), due to concerns of coming to unwelcome attention. A separate links site/file would eliminate this potential problem and the wiki could go more "public" as a Peel reference and information site - with the Google Docs thing carrying on in parallel (and links to it up on the wiki). In my opinion, the more info there is on the wiki site, the more likely it is that people will stumble on it who may have hidden stashes of old tapes, etc, which could then be shared to the group here (there's no shortage of links to the newsgroup on the wiki - and I don't see any reason why this would change). In terms of possible disadvantages for the change, people would have two sites to check - one for general info and the other specifically for links. This obviously wouldn't be quite as convenient, but it already happens to an extent, as I've avoided putting up direct torrent links up (eg, the 17 volume compilation). The whole thing would also have to be set up, which would take a bit of time (and be very boring to do), but would be far from impossible. I'd like to know what other people think about this, so will set up a forum link over at the wiki if anyone would like to discuss it. Then get back to you all here at a later date with conclusions. Sorry for rambling on at length. You need to be careful with this. The point of putting these downloads up individually rather than to a central site was to avoid creating a big enough target for the record companies Putting them all into one easily found file makes it easy for them to send take down notices to the download sites You could lose all the downloads overnight And that's aside from the legal responsibilites there would then be on the list owner (and all the list members) Let us remember that the copyright to the contents of these files is not held by the BBC but by the record companies who own the rights to the music and 'charity' is their lawyers middle name as we all know The present diffuse situation is not the easiest or most efficient to use but it is probably the safest martinw From thebarguest@... I'm in favour of diffuse as well. I'm not saying the current situation isn't necessarily sustainable, but just trying to think long term and consider the record company (and BBC) side of things as well. Centralizing links on a single file obviously creates an easy target, contrary to the current situation, as you say. I don't know what's best really... All suggestions gratefully received. I¹d just got started with the .mp3 conversions when I lost a hard drive containing my first two batches; I¹m hoping to recover the drive, but if not, I¹ve asked Rocker to return the DVD¹s (or copies thereof) so I can do them. In the meantime, I¹ve started encoding to both mp3 and .flac with the latest batch (which I received last week), though obviously this slows things down a bit. The reason I delayed the mp3 conversion, was that I was looking to do a bit of batch sweetening, but it doesn¹t look like a very practical option, so I¹ll probably just get on with straightforward batch conversion, which will be a lot quicker. One tape had no Peel content. Sadly no complete shows. Quite a lot of "one session wonders" (as Ken might call them) in this batch. Were they more common in 1985 or is it just coincidence? Also one of the shows (26 March 1985) has a Nightingales repeat session that isn't listed in the show index of Ken's Book. 1985 was about 18 months before I started listening to Peel and I was shocked by how much goth stuff he was playing. By the time I became a regular listener he'd stopped playing it completely so you might say I had a lucky escape. Would be great, though, if people would like to flesh these out and add additional details on the format (single, LP name, session) and label for songs, or add comments (either by Peel or just interesting points on the show). Details on the records are often given in the shows by Peel or can be researched online. Also useful if you can correct any mistakes your find. Just press the edit button by the side of each section, make your changes, preview and save. Great if you can get an account so you can be contacted if necessary. If there are bunches of shows that are shared that don't yet have tracklistings, I normally include these in the help wanted notice at the top of the main 400 Box page on the wiki and also make a call here (to the mailing list) for volunteers. Here's the address of the main 400 Box page again: http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/400_Box Many thanks again for everyone's contributions to the 400 Box. Cheers, Steve W PS Outside the 400 Box, everyone here is very welcome to help out anywhere on the wiki in terms of corrections, extra information, etc. Please contact me or Steve (TK/so it goes) if you have any questions about the wiki. --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, MARK LUETCHFORD wrote: > > Like Humphey and Stuart I am an early 80s fan. If you want to do a show, it might be an idea to fill in the first track and then add something like "work ongoing" so other people know not to do the same one at the same time. Though what I so liked about JP was not just that he was so good at moving with the times but that he could take anyone with him. Yes I have a soft spot for that 82-85 period especially as a lot of the stuff is almost impossible to track down or even identify, and it is a time of your life when music just MEANS so much more. But listening to some of the recent Radio Eins or the 200x R1 shows I've quite often been completely bowled over by something contemporary that it's set me on another road of musical discovery. The 400 box had very few tapes from 1981, 1982 and 1983 - presumably Bryan didn't have time or resources to record the show (maybe he had a life!), or maybe re-used the tapes in 1984 / 1985, as there is more coverage of those years. At least, I've tried to keep it updated as we roll along (with help from others), but I'm not discounting the odd mistake. If rippers have shared ones that have been missed, please let us know. So the good news is, there should be a good amount of 78-81 (and a few others) that have already been ripped and are waiting to be shared in some way. Specifically, I've opened up a "Mailing List" section on the menu, which includes the 400 Box pages and various other projects related to this list. So don't panic if you wonder what's going on. The rejigging is not complete, but hopefully in the end it will make things a bit clearer as well as easier to find individual pages. I'm not sure if you need to be registered to view it so I'll cut and paste the meat to save messing: Universal Music are releasing a box set called 'Kats Karavan - The History Of John Peel On The Radio'. It's a 4-CD set and our single 'Convenience' has been included on it. You'll find some details here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kats-Karavan-History-John-Radio/dp/tracks/B002N1BNXC It was lovely (and lucky) that we got asked to contribute a track, and it led to a right palaver. Having agreed to put the track on the set, I went home to go through The Library(!) of BOB tapes, and, predictably, 'Convenience' was about the only BOB release for which I couldn't find a master mix. All I could find was the original 2" 24-track session tape, recorded at Moles Studio in Bath. Bloodied but unbowed, I resolved to have the analogue tape transferred to digital so that I could remix it for the box set...reasoning that it'd be good to have a digital master of the song anyway, because there had never been a CD release of it, just the original vinyl. I sent the tape to The Sawmills to be transferred, but they found that age and damp had rendered the tape's oxide layer 'sticky' and thus unplayable on a tape machine. The solution was to send the tape to London to be baked in an oven for 4 days by a nice man with a beard, who then did the transfer to digital. Having succcessfully achieved that, he then beamed the 24-tracks of 'Convenience', via the Internet, to me, in a studio in Cornwall, with mixing engineer John Cornfield. John is a bit of a dude...look him up...he did 'The Dukes Of Stratosphear' stuff, and much more. Anyway, we re-created the old mix, and then allowed ourselves the luxury of tweaking it very slightly for the new millennium! You wont hear drastic changes...only subtle differences. It was good that Dean came down to join me in the studio for the mix; I'd not seen him for quite a while. It was very nice re-visiting the recording after all these years; a real trip down the hackneyed memory lane. Nicest of all was hearing a few of the guitar licks hidden by the original mix. It's 20 years since 'Convenience' came out and this new release is, I must admit, very gratifying. ---- steve wrote: > Hi folks, > > Just received my copy of the new 4CD compilation. Much of this Top Gear show was unmistakably late sixties, but White Noise - Silence Is Requested Welfare State was a total surprise. A mesmerizing track with a New Order like bass line. A gem worth listening to even if you weren't born for another 20 years. I notice White Noise are appearing on lots of Electronic Mixtapes and compilations issued in the last 5 years. They did three Peel sessions, of which the last featured songs that never received any kind of commercial release. It's available somewhere on the Net and well worth searching out. Anyway, I was working in Southampton for a couple of weeks in the summer of 1991 and they played the Joiner's Arms - a famous "indie" dive. (I'd never been to a gig in a pub back room before...) I got there early, sneaked in to the soundcheck and then got talking to singer/guitarist/joint composer Richard Blackborow (he of the Bob forum post below). He quickly learned that I was a fan, expressed amazement that I'd recently paid £8 (or thereabouts) for a copy of their debut release - the "Prune Your Tree" flexi, and then I said that I was still looking for a copy of the 12" of "Convenience" to complete my set of Bob singles. "I think we've got an odd copy lying around the office," he quoth. "I'll send you one." And he was as good as his word - completely free and gratis! I've still got it, together with the covering letter. Meanwhile, back at the gig, the song itself was dedicated to "the geezer from Swansea who's got all our records"! Fame! A truly great band. I often wondered what happened to them and the Bob forum provides the answer - a couple more years scuffling around the "toilet" circuit to diminishing returns before they basically got fed up and split up. Shame. --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, robf wrote: > > I just saw an interesting post on the BOB forum from Richard BOB about the inclusion of their track "Convenience" on this new compilation. > > I'm not sure if you need to be registered to view it so I'll cut and paste the meat to save messing: > > Universal Music are releasing a box set called 'Kats Karavan - The History Of John Peel On The Radio'.
