Quote from the Wiki
"Mark comments: "Always relished the fact that Peel “discovered” The Durans – so often he played bands that were later to break into the mainstream – this was special, although there is a touch of rancour in his voice in a link after The Original Mirrors (an Ian Broudie band) when he infers that Adam and the Ants thanked Peter Powell for “discovering them”. Many mentions of his impending trip to Paris to see Liverpool in European Cup Final and need for a holiday … having messed up plans by arranging to take the John Peel roadshow to East Kilbride!"
I've still to listen to the recording but I guess this was the time when Peel went to the Olympia in East Kilbride and I finally got to meet the great man himself. Not that I can remember much about it but my main impression was that I thought he was almost as shy as I was. I do remember thanking him for introducing me to some great music over the years and in particular to the music of the Damned & The Pink Fairies, although a few years apart. He likened them to each other as both bands wanted to make a glorious racket and generally have a good time! I may have written out a request for either Smash It Up or The Snake but don't ever remember him playing it although I had given up taping by then........
Cheers....Jimmy
