Alan,

When you click to download the torrent, it should automatically load the
small .torrent file into your BitTorrent client and then start downloading
the file(s) described within the torrent.

What browser are you using? In the case of Firefox, for example, you have
to tell it what program should be associated with .torrent files. That's
set up in Tools --> Options on the "Applications" tab. It's probably
similar for IE and other browsers.

If you're still struggling, here's a BitTorrent tutorial (which assumes
you're using μtorrent as your BT client):
