Comedians Lee & Herring appeared on one of the shows and have made their (very extensive) bits of it available (undated, and minus nearly all the music!) in two parts here http://www.fistoffun.net/downloads.htm While researching further I discovered this on johnpeel.net "Upon visiting Mr. Lee's website I found a John Peel Show file for download. "16 October 1996 – Richard Herring and Stewart Lee appear on the John Peel show, a teenage dream". You'll find it in the archives section. I've not listened to it yet so I can't advise on how it compares with the version/s already circulating. See http://www.stewartlee.co.uk/archives.htm " This appears to refer to the same (music-less) edit of the show but with no hiss, and in one mp3 file. For many years I thought "Young, Gifted and Black" was about a firm of solicitors or something. But thanks to Mark, Alan, Roger, the Steves and everyone else for all the recent stuff. I was hoping to have a bit of Top Gear '68 and Peel Show '81 action for you this week, but due to a cock-up on the ripping front they'll have to be held over till next week. I do hope he was not in the Atlanta area and missed out on the chance to buy him a beer and/or some BBQ. And that goes for - as some folk say here - "all ya'll" on the list. If you are passing through here do look me up. I can't say Atlanta can offer the same historic perspective that a tour of Britain might - hey we have a bar here that has been open since 1939! That passes for longevity here. A friend from Swansea who visited the US for the first time said Atlanta "looked like a movie set." Well so be it. If we go to any pubs newer than 1939 I yell "Action" and "Cut!" a lot. Speaking of Atlanta, which we conveniently now are, we have a one of a kind radio station here you might want to explore. And no it is not a nerdy "college station" playing art-damaged noise. It is an AM (MW to you) station owned buy a wealthy baking executive who, instead of retiring, bought a radio station to just sort of play around. It is is his only broadcast property - an anomaly in these chain ownership days - and he has hired a good staff to play mostly what they want, and the station has amassed a huge music library. If they focus on anything it might be US southern regional blues and soul, but there is plenty of everything else old, way old, new and way new. http://www.1690wmlb.com/ Specifically may I direct you to a weekly show later today from 4-6PM eastern US time which I guess would be 9PM UK time. The Stomp And Stammer radio hour(s) is hosted by Jeff Clark and named after the magazine he publishes -- and I write for sometimes. He is John Peel affectionado and sort of patterns his programs the way John would have done. tom in atlanta From paulpanic@... Sat Aug 8 18:32:53 2009 From: paulpanic@... So it may have been on the 19 or 20 Sept -- but we have no audio (as yet) for these. Possible that further rips of the remaining 400 Box tapes may unearth extra bits and pieces, so all isn't lost yet. Or maybe more 1979 shows will become available from another source at some point. I recall he did go to Estonia once, but it's funny I have forgotten this if indeed it was 92, because I was working at Radio 1 at the time. I do not recall a second documentary on russia, from that year, but maybe it was on the World service or another station, whatever, and I missed it. Perhaps there are mentions of his then recent russian/baltic travels, companions, the purpose, etc in his links in summer shows that are now available from 92? Message-ID: <20580196.1250090381396.JavaMail.root@...> There was a 30 min documentary that aired sometime in the mid 80's on World Service on Peel's Russia trip; I remember hearing it. I may have a tape of it somewhere, but it would be with deep-static SW reception. The mini-doc may have run in Peel's regular BBCWS slot, or it may have been its own special. That I cant recall. At the time I did subscribe at some expense via overseas air mail to the BBCWS schedule guide "London Calling" (cute, eh?) and there was an advance write up about it. Maybe Ken could find those issues in an archive somewhere. This recalls the staid BBCWS continuity announcers of the 80's and their often thinly veiled disdain for Peel's weekly show, usually along the lines of "Coming up at zero three thirty GMT, John Peel and his sort of music." Of course the all time classic, mentioned here long ago, was the WS continuity announcer who promised music on Peel's next show from Dave Clarke, Melt Banana, and Prince Far I, and pronounced the last artist as "Prince Far The First." They'd been on at Peel for ages, buying him pints of lager and so forth and eventually he succumbed and they did a session, but for me it was retro. In fact, any and all Peel info welcomed for the wiki. Doesn't have to be to do with shows. On a kind of related note, recently started up new front with a "Gigography" page, sourced so far largely from the online IT archive and Marmalade Skies site (many thanks to Colin). At present it covers only the late 60s and early 70s. Have lots more dates to add, but would be great if anyone has further records. I know there are loads of mentions of Peel Roadshow nights on already available audio, for example. But maybe people attended events with Peel DJing, etc. Anyway, for people who haven't seen it yet, here's the page so far (long way to go!): http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Gigography Please feel free to get in touch (off-list maybe or via the wiki). Anyway, this guy apparently finds old tapes for sale in the Dalston Oxfam Shop, rips them, and posts them here http://dalstonoxfamshop.blogspot.com/ The latest is the old NME classic Pogo a Go Go tape (check out Love Lies Limp!), but a fantastic one I've been listening to this week is Star Taxi Music. This what he says about it: "In the bins at Dalston Oxfam Shop this week I discovered two tapes made by SABTA, the South African Black Taxi Association. I can't find virtually any information about them on the net, but they are musical compilations made of mostly South African pop from 1988 interspersed with some hilarious ads and commentary, intended for taxi drivers to play for their passengers during rides. This is not just irony in action, however. Some of the tunes are really great and this cassette and music will not appear anywhere on ebay or the net. I think my favorite track on here is Siyaya E Jerusalema by the Holy Spirits Choir, but also very good are Money by Splash and Ushukela Mningi Lapha by Ashiko. But you have to listen to some of the interludes as well" http://dalstonoxfamshop.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html The link to download side a as one file seems to be broken, but I'll upload both sides as two files as soon as I can. A couple of things that came up going through them: 1. The initial batch of Kev's tapes (around 10?, all in 1982) are all up linked on Bill's directory as well, as single mp3 files, if anyone's looking for alternative downloads. Will add a link for Bill's directory to the top of the Kev's Tapes page. 2. Other files with names that confused me: - the 1975-12-30 file (think this actually is the 29 December 1975 show, as Peel says at the end the next show is the last of the year. Also, Ivor Cutler session chimes with Ken's book). -Wishone Ash concert from XX-XX-1976 -- we appear to have a Wiki date now (22 Nov 76). -1982-02-22 file (seems like a very short version of the 1982-02-23 file, which is also up on Bill's directory) - 1993-03-13 (think this is actually the next day, with PJ Harvey and Oil Seed Rape sessions). For some reason, appear so far not to have Wiki pages for 21 May 1981 (Girls At Our Best repeat session) and 1977-08-19 (Family concert repeat). Will get the pages up pronto. If anyone wants to help with the tracklistings, please feel welcome. That's all, folks!
