Unfortunately, I seem to have a month or two's gap about then, Dr. M.
However "The Grizzle", who's recently started a blog called "A Peel A
Day", is currently upping shows from just that era. He's currently up to
21.08.02, so with a bit of luck he might be uploading the show you want
in the near future.
The blog's at http://peeladay.blogspot.com/
Eddie.

Yep, got the session. It's on a CD somewhere - will endeavour to rip it and
upload it in the next few days.

Just been playing Treasure by the Cocteaus, and it made me think about albums with all one word song titles. So here's three for starters, Peel connection is that he played at least two of these, if not all?

I used to have this after hearing them on Peel - and had forgotten all about it - I recognise the cover.
It was stolen from my flat - along with all my other records and tapes when my next-door-but-one neighbour Melvin burgled my flat whilst I was away. Being as he was into (unemployed babysitter) Michael Jackson, Wham! and Madonna, I don't know why the Hi-Fi wasn't sufficient for him. I shudder to think how many rare bootlegs and Peel tapes were copied over with the Top 40 or some such w*nk afterwards.
BTW: There's does anyone know what this lyric is from. I thought it was 3D A Fish In Sea but now I have my doubts. It's a song about the last women to be hanged in the UK, Ruth Ellis (a film was made about her in the eighties IIRC). It goes something like, "Ruth Ellis, too young to die, much to young to die", female singer, not a particularly fast song but not slow either IYSWIM.

A bit sad answering my own email (especially on a Friday night when I should be out) but I’ve found the answer – it’s Ruth Ellis by Ex Post Facto. I think I must have heard it on a Peel Session but have found a live version on the She’ll Rape The World LP.
I really should get out more.

Label description for the new Simon Joyner re-issue:
"Omaha, Nebraska native and singer/songwriter Simon Joyner has been
writing about the dizzy and dark aspects of the human condition since
1992. The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll was originally released in
1994, on Sing, Eunuchs!, exclusively on vinyl, and marks the first
major critical milestone in Joyner's lauded career. John Peel famously
played it in its entirety on his BBC radio program and Joyner's
underground cult status was solidified; in all of John Peel's years in
radio he had only played a record in its entirety one other time."
Two questions:
1) Is the info above accurate? If so, does anyone know the date when
presumably John played the record in its entirety?(an upload of the
tape would be nice... Andrew, where art thou???)
2. What was that *other* record played by John in its entirety?
"Tubular Bells"?
Thanks!

No - it was obviously not "Famously" played by Peel in its entirety -
otherwise we'd all remember him doing it - I guess he may well have played all the
tracks from it over a few shows - in which case there must be many other LPs
he similarly played "in their entirety" eg Undertones first, Siouxsie & the
Banshees first, Ballboy's first.
> <>

I had an idea that he played Pink Floyd's "Animals" LP in its entirety on its
release - quite surprising as I thought by then punk had already started. Can
anyone confirm this?
And did someone mention recently that he played a Tangerine Dream LP in its
entirety?
Cheers!

It was not that uncommon for Peel to play whole records on the 70s as
"reviewing new records" was one of the loopholes in the needletime
restrictions which still applied then. By playing a whole new record Peel
gave himself elbow room to play what he wanted in the rest of the show

I've also read that he played Songs In The Key Of Life in its entirety,

And didn't the White Stripes' lawyers kick up a fuss when he played

to its release which seems an idiotic thing to do to the person who
basically introduced them in this country.
On a similar note, Didn't Pj Harvey's lawyers prevent her from doing
live sessions at peel acres despite that fact that she said that's
what she wanted to do?

I don't know what's on the blog but if you search in Soul Seek for "jp f50
1984" you should find all of them in order (from Vencaramos to How Soon Is
Now) .
Some of the Festive Fifties I have, feature comments from John Peel, others
just the tracks themselves - this doesn't.

A little time capsule, with the snippet of news completely overshadowing
the start of the Peel show. The sinking of HMS Sheffield and the
Belgrano both announced the same night. Often the old news headlines
pass me by, but this made me stop what I was doing and listen. A year

Firstly, the important stuff:
Altrok Radio is at http://www.altrokradio.com
Please remember to tune in whenever you can - every hour you listen turns into more visibility for the station; we show up higher in search listings, and such like that. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us.
Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've added features we know you'll like...
Mondays at 11:30am Eastern (with a preview at 0730 GMT) you get to hear Sean Carolan (often referred to in these dispatches as "me") showcase the new music we've added this week on the Altrok Radio FM Showcase. New stuff, classic stuff, and Jeff Raspe with his Altrok Radio Underground Pick Of The Week...
And on Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.)
But for now - we've got songs to let you know about.
This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from:
- Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong
- The Ting Tings
- The Duke Spirit
- The B-52's
- Midnight Juggernauts
- Nine Inch Nails
Plus we've got newly-added music:
- Autons - Election Singer
- Blood Red Shoes - Doesn't Matter Much
- Coldplay - Violet Hill
- CSS - Rat Is Dead (Rage)
- Danny & Dusty - New York City Lullaby
- Foxboro Hot Tubs - The Pedestrian
- Gnarls Barkley - Charity Case
- Ladytron - Ghosts
- Lismore - More
- The Long Blondes - Century
- My Morning Jacket - Touch Me I'm Going To Scream
- Radiohead - Nude (Bathing In The Icefloe Mix by Thomas Dolby)
- Young Knives - Up All Night
Our Featured Classics:
- The Bongos - Skydiving
- Buzzcocks - Fiction Romance
- Killing Joke - Kings And Queens
- Stan Ridgway - Drive She Said
- The Specials - Ghost Town (12 inch version)
- Talking Heads - Life During Wartime
- Tears For Fears - The Hurting
- The Three O'Clock - Half the Way There
- Vicious Pink - Cccan't You See
- Sean Carolan

He didn't play "Pepper" in full on the final PG - just little groups of tracks scattered throughout the five & a half hours. This is when he first played it:
http://radiolondon.co.uk/rl/scrap60/fabforty/sgtpepper/sgtp.html
The interesting thing about Peel on the PG is that he didn't fit the stereotype of the hippy DJ who'd say "yeah, man this is a really groovy album" & then disappear for 40 minutes. Usually he'd play individual tracks (occasionally a sequence of 2 or 3, or long passages from the Mothers' "Absolutely Free") & talk in his personal way between them. This may have been a result of his training in US commercial radio - underground FM radio was only just emerging over there in summer '67. As Martin says, playing albums in full came later.....

In 1991he played the Fall's "Shiftwork" LP in its entirety, across two consecutive shows (side A one night, side B the next). I taped it off the radio. It was great having a copy a week or two in advance of the official release date. Not sure if the record company were as happy though.
[I've managed to track down the dates of transmission - Sat 9th March & Sun 10th. LP not released until 15th April.]

Yeah, that triggered off a memory - in 1978 he played
all of the "Black & White" album a week or so before
general release. I duly taped it and felt privileged.
Can't remember whether he played the whole 2 sides
contiguously, but I think he played at least whole
sides .......... The Stranglers, by the way !

Eric Clapton's 'No reason to cry' lp, played in its entirety, Peel
Show, Friday 6 August 1976! Martin's right , it was a get-out of
needletime to play new albums, because they counted as 'reviews'. As
others here have confirmed, there were many many occasions when he
worked his way through an album, one track a night, from side 1 band
1 all the way to (in some cases) side 4 band 12. But after needletime
was abolished in 1988 I think it was quite rare for him to play
either an entire album in one show, or even an entire side, although
it did happen from time to time, The Fall and other favourites cited
here being obvious exceptions.
The debate over the mythical first broadcast of Tubular Bells, as I
document in my book, is that while he undeniably played side 1 that
night, I can find no absolute evidence, beyond the claims of Branson,
Oldfield, etc, that he played side 2 as well, though he quite
possibly did. I wonder if a tape of that show will ever turn up?
(29/5/73)
Not sure where that PJ Harvey story is coming from: she DID do one at
Peel Acres! Was it that her lawyers/managers then stopped her doing
any more of these?

For the more literary minded the name Goodbye Mr McKenzie is from a

Possibly if the sessions have been officially released then a record company may have purchased the rights from the BBC?

It's never the BBC's property. An major label with a record contract with
an artist has the rights to that artist's output (all of it) during the period
of the contract (indie label contract are often a bit looser)
The BBC contract for the session gives the broadcast rights to it not
the ownership of it. As far as the record company are concerned they
count as an outside producer. Most BBC session contracts give them
unlimited rebroadcast rights but that is not necessarily the case -
some labels may have wanted sessions put out only once or twice

Yes, i think it's probably something like that. Technically after every broadcast and single
repeat, every contributor to the BBC has to be recontracted - that's why, i think, you can
only listen again on the web as it were to 'one repeat' in a 7 day period, in theory. Now the
vast majority of bands, famous or obscure, are not going to stand in the way of any
rebroadcasts or small fees. But some might, and simply refuse the recontract for another
airing. Call it a pathetic attempt to maintain the aloofness and mystery of their artist. I'll
ask Hanna at R1 if she knows....

Seriously, passing old shows to as many people as possible
means they are more likely to withstand the ravages of time and

Some of you will remember The Stukas, fronted by Paul Brown and backed by John Mackie on Drums, Raggy Lewis on Rythym Guitar, Mick Smithers on Lead Guitar and Kevin Allen on Bass. They released three singles as follows:
"Klean Livin Kids" b/w "Oh Little Girl" - Chiswick NS 21 A/B 1977
"I Like Sport" b/w "I'll Send You A Postcard" and "Dead Lazy" - Sonet SON 2134 A/B 1977
"Washing Machine Boogie" b/w "Motorbike" - Sonet Number unknown 1978.
I have copies of the first two, but sadly not the last.
They also played a session for Peel, which he repeated.
I was lucky enough to have seen them 6 times in five months at the end of 77, early 78. What a great live band.
Now then, have any of you got copies of these singles in MP3? or indeed any memories of the band?
Whatever happenned to the 5 members. Never heard of again.
Cheers,
Julian

How could I forget! That's the only single I have by

somwhere. We are in the middle of home improvements
which are not due to finish until the 15th June so no
chance of a copy until after that date. Remind me then

Excellent.
I did see Radio Stars when John Mackie played with them.
I wonder if the third single was ever actually released.

I've got the session, but only in Mono, in one channel!! Any improvement on this would be greatly appreciated, as would the singles, any stories, pics etc. I'd love to know what happenned to the band and its members.

- Ladytron
- My Device
- Foxboro Hot Tubs
- The Fall
- Pat DiNizio
- Carbon-Silicon
Plus we've got newly-added music:
- Cloud Cult - Everybody Here Is A Cloud
- Elvis Costello - No Hiding Place
- The Duke Spirit - Lassoo
- The Long Blondes - Here Comes The Serious Bit
- Mates Of State - Get Better
- Nine Inch Nails - Echoplex
- Poi Dog Pondering - Lemon Drop Man
- Princeton - Eminent Victorians
- Sky Larkin - I Was A Teenage Hand Model
- Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Oceanographer
- Stereolab - Three Women
- The Twilight Sad - Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards, It Did
- Weezer - Pork 'n Beans
- The Young Knives - Counters
Our Featured Classics:
- The Butthole Surfers - Who Was In My Room Last Night (Trent Reznor Remix)
- The Church - One Day
- The Clash - London Calling
- The Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
- The Dukes Of Stratosphear - Vanishing Girl
- Freur - Doot Doot
- Mission Of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver
- Modest Mouse - Ocean Breathes Salty
- Wire - Drill
- Sean Carolan

I'm desperately looking for recordings of Peel sessions by the band Gore. They were a Dutch
band that was active (on and off) from 1985 until 1997. They did three sessions in all, the
original broadcast dates were: 4/11/87, 6/12/88 and 21/9/91.
Please get in touch if you have recordings of any of these sessions or the complete shows in

Gore's first session is one of my favourites ever, and I think I've got all 3 on cassettes somewhere.
The best I could offer would be a taped copy, but the sound quality might not be great.
If anyone has them available for download then I'd be interested too.
I managed to get hold of their album, Mean Man's Dream, a few years ago, but I didn't think it was quite as good as the sessions.
The CD is still available on Amazon (only £87 new or £78 used). This review is from Amazon.com.
"This is one of the heaviest punk/thrash metal albums of all-time. All of the songs are completely instrumental, with interesting time changes and extremely raw, distorted guitars. Very original. People I played this to either loved it or hated it -- nothing in between".
Cheers
Alan

I've put 3 Gore MP3's in the Files section (not session tracks):
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/peel/files/
While there I listened to "John_peel_name_jingle.wma" in which John
mentions a session by Bob.
Now their first session is another great one I'd like to get hold of.

Big John was strictly a live guitarist. Every guitar on In Untero is played

I think Kurt was genuinely a fan of the Exploited - so to him it was like
having a punk rock legend in the band. Same with Pat Smear, formerly of the
Germs. Also the In Utero stuff is much more textural, with layered guitars - so
it was impossible to play as a 3-piece. Kurt was very rarely off his tits
live. The probelms came when Nirvana weren't on the road....

There were 3 Peel sessions and also a Simon Mayo one (which
6Music repeated a couple of weeks ago)
I'll put the first session up when I do the Gore ones (so many

I agree about Bob's 1st session. I have a very good quality cassette of
the complete show of the first broadcast of that (18/1/88), which also
includes the repeat of the wedding present's ukraianian #1 - it's a
great representative show of that period (rap, african, house, etc...)
and the first one I will try and digitise from my (modest) collection,
once I get some time in the summer and get that software I bought
installed, after which, I will share. By the way, does anyone else have
the same problem as me with those rar files? I have I think downloaded
to my new Mac from the web all the bits i need to decompress or unpack
or whatever rar files require but I can't get the show files to open.
Oh well, one day I will discover I forgot to toggle button A36 or
something embarrassingly simple...

Hi Ken,
Have you tired using UnRarX for decompressing .rar
files? I've found it's usually able to open files that
Stuffit etc. can't cope with.
You can download it for free from www.unrarx.com

Yes, I've checked UK Nova as well as TheBox.bz and Demonoid (TG it's back) and there's nothing. I've also looked at the Imdb forums. Apparently, the show has never been repeated and requests to the BBC for information are never replied to.
Cheers
David
a torrent of the show might turn up somewhere like UKNova in the future, if it doesn't come out on dvd. join the site and keep your eyes peeled.
there's a comment about the music here - http://www.uknova.com/wsgi/topic/view/74001:
"The music for the series was composed by New Order. The main theme for the show is an adaptation of the song Vanishing Point. There is a specific mix of this song called the Making Out Mix."

Hi Jimmy,
I know you are coming to the gig, but perhaps you could post on the

The gig Grahame refers to is for the book launch at the 12 Bar Club in

Went to see the Jon Savage Joy Division documentary at the cinema last night. Nicely done, although I'm starting to feel like they can't keep telling the same story over and over. The main difference with this doc was the first time Annik has been interviewed on screen about her relationship with Ian Curtis.
However - by FAR the best bit for me was when they played the clip of Peel playing Atompshere from the Sordide Sentimental french 7" at the wrong speed! As usual he scalded himself and then accused the French of "sending us apples that taste of cardboard and records that play at the wrong speed" - priceless!

Hello, in a couple of months my mix album (double vinyl only) will be
released on the Klangbad label (the Faust label) in Germany. It's gonna
be called 'DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess Meets Her Soulmates At Faust
Studio Deejay Laboratory', (amongst others a nod to the old dub albums
King tubby meets the upsetter at.. etc.). it will contain some 34
tracks, mostly recent stuff, but there's one really old track: 'In
Rhythm' by Bristol band Scream and Dance. Thanks to Rocker I am now in
contact with one of the two singers, Amanda Stewart. She asked me if I
could find a way of obtaining their two Peel sessions. I thought of this
group of course.. So.anyone has Scream And Dance Peel sessions
(23/3/1982 and 1/2/1983). They also did a kid Jensen session.
Thanks!

Fan-bloody-tastic.
How great to hear Brian Wilson's Bed again after all this time.
It wasn't included on Bob's album Leave The Straight Life Behind (which, by the way, is available on ebay - current bid £1.99 - I can thoroughly recommend it).
Thank You, thank you, thank you.

Message-ID: <0K1400LKK5YHT580@...>
- The Courteeners
- The Young Knives
- Sky Larkin
- The Long Blondes
- CSS
- XX Teens
Plus we've got newly-added music:
- Elvis Costello - American Gangster Time
- The Cure - The Only One
- Dirty Pretty Things - Hippy's Son
- The Futureheads - Radio Heart
- Katie The Pest - Pretty Special
- Late Of The Pier - Space And The Woods
- Mates Of State - My Only Offer
- My Device - Super Tonio!
- Nine Inch Nails - 1,000,000
- Pendulum - Propane Nightmares
- The Pigeon Detectives - This Is An Emergency
- The Radio Dept. - Freddie And The Trojan Horse
- Sunny Day Sets Fire - Brainless
- The Ting Tings - Shut Up And Let Me Go
- The Video Nasties - Gobi
Our Newly-Added Classics:
- Billy Bragg - Greetings to the New Brunette
- The Chameleons - A Person Isn't Safe Anywhere These Days
- The Dead Milkmen - Instant Club Hit
- Ministry - I'm Falling
- The Pixies - Gigantic
- R.E.M. - Wolves, Lower
- Squeeze - Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)
- Joe Strummer - Trash City
- Visage - Fade To Grey
- Sean Carolan

Just realised i do have that somewhere. Chances are
it's just the music, and it may only be the top 20 or
so, but I'll dig it out when I get home tonight, and
hopefully get it digitsed & uploaded tomorrow,
cheers

This was because he made a list of 70 but only played the top 50 (as you
can hear on the files I have uploaded, he claimed he was thinking of
making it 100). He did the same thing in 1980 (65 tracks) and 1981 (60
tracks). Finally, his recently discovered self-made chart of 1977
featured 61 tracks, and the 1999 chart had Monkey Steals The Drum as an
'honorary number 51'. All these will eventually appear on my site (in
fact, I recently did a post on all the songs that made number 51).
However, if you can't wait, I suggest you download my list (my site
) and compile them yourself.
Best wishes

Thanks for this but, unfortunately, the download starts then stops, using two different computers, two different browsers, etc. Even hitting the side of the monitor didn't work - and that normally does the trick!

According to the internet ....
In 1989 John Peel took himself off to the Eurovision Song Contest in
Lausanne, covering the event for Radio One. Although he had little time for
the music, he did appreciate the idea of the event. Attending the press
conference of the 12 year old French entrant, Peel was moved to ask, "Does
she speak English?". The reply came back, "She barely speaks French..." He
also confided that he felt overcome with emotion at having made it on to the
stage and touched the scoreboard. And all this from a man who championed The
Pixies.

Oddly enough, on one of the far-too-few occasions I met the great man,
we talked about Eurovision: he asked if I watched it, and I said I
watched the scoring at the end. "No, no, that's like having your
pudding without eating all your vegetables. You have to watch the lot."

Subject: New To Group - Searching For Sessions
Message-ID:
Hi All
New to this group and looking for an FAQ or basic primer on how to find
mp3 files of specific Peel Sessions I have known and loved e.g. Misty
In Roots and The Damned for starters.
Any advice or help welcome.
Regards
Pash

Welcome aboard!
Presumably you've checked out the various Peel blogs ?
If not, then the best place to start would probably be
http://johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com/ as not only does
it include links to most of the other important peel
blogs, via friendly green buttons at the top of the
page (how refreshingly 90's!) , but also to a bunch of
torrents too.
Happy hunting,
Roger
PS. and you can always just post requests here...oh,
you just did ;-)
P2S. Seeing Misty at the Bristol Vegan Fayre tomorrow!

Damn! Only found out about this one too late!
Wouldn't be the same without the "You are like a cabbage in this society"
intro though!
