The problems of digital degradation are twofold:

Firstly, the equivalent of a twisted tape, or a broken tape, when it
comes to a CD are more serious; what renders only part of an analogue
medium unreadable may render the entire digital media useless (ie a
cracked / broken CD).

Secondly, where there are transient flaws, digital flaws have
different characteristics than analogue flaws.

The best protection is to ensure that multiple complete flac sets are
stored at separate locations.
