Julian

Thanks for your offer to convert my mp3. I have converted about 300 of the 400 already to wav (approx 12 - 20 c90 cassette tapes recorded on per year- some years better than others for music so I would sift through all the music that John played at the time - I was 16 at the time and thankfully had the wit to use chrome tdk tapes from 1977 onward. I have backed these up onto dvd's (4 x c90 tapes on to each dvd disk) I am currently looking into backing up my hard drive by using rar or another data compressing program but not sure which one to use as yet. Gordon,

There's the rub, people who say "when I become senile", how do you sit them down and tell them eh?

Nothing to do with Peel really, but back about 8 years ago, I went to the States with my son Nick, who, at the time was 12 (he's 19 now, do the maths!!). Among the many places visited, we went to Washington DC where we have friends. On arrival at the airport we were picked up by my friend David. His 10 year old son Brendan was with him. Anyhow we drove off towards Baltimore, when Nick and Brendan (who had never met before) suddenly started reciting episodes of The Simpsons, word for word. See they'll be the same.

If ever you want the tapes transferred, let me know (give me a bit of time to get these 49 done though).

  Cheers,

  Julian

Lucky you getting the 49 cassette tapes. Most of my tapes have John edited out as it was more to do with the music for me. At the time John had either 4 x 2hr shows, to even an early Sat evening slot at one point to the 3 x 2hr shows a week. Anyway his voice was ringing in my head everyday because I would sift through the previous nights shows deciding which tracks to keep. In my teens I would sit through each show and record whatever it was that caught my attention. Now hearing Peely's voice is not something I take so much for granted though I still have comments of his here and there sprinkled between tracks. One of these events was when he interviewed the Cherry Boy's and what I call the "Give it rice" interview. Peely was discussing with them the problem of the rice where the lead singer who was reportedly getting quite "ratty" while trying to sing with a rice being thrown at him and finding it difficult to sing with a mouthful of rice. If I get to my 90's and become senile while gently rocking backwards and forward in a home for the unwanted elderly I will probably still remember these useless little musical tit bits while forgetting my own name.

    Gordon,

I agree, while Michael and I have differing tastes in music, we have remarkably similar experiences and feelings for everything Peel and music related. We've been out for a few beers from time to time and perhaps one way of looking at it from my point of view is that a discussion with Michael is like talking to myself!!! It's fun knowing that someone understands what I felt and experienced when I was say 20. It's almost like twins ending each other's sentences. And I guess we all remember a certain percentage of programmes and records, so of course asking a question like I did, or indeed Michael did the other day regarding Peel's fox howl, then someone is bound to have the answer.

Peel certainly had a serious influence over a lot of people, probably more so than the politicians, celebs or anyone else of the last 30 years for that matter. I can't say I liked everything he played, but I did like the fact that he played it.

Anyhow, must go as I've just received 49 tapes of John Peel Programmes and I need to spend some serious time copying these to MP3.

    Toodle pip,

    Julian
