Not directly, but you can encode a mono mp3 at a lower bitrate than a 
stereo mp3 and get the same sound quality. A file encoded in mono mode 
at 96kbps should sound as good as a file in stereo mode at 192kbps. 
That's an over-simplification if you start getting into things like 
joint-stereo encoding, but you get the general idea.
