Surely 384 k/bits (free form Lame) is the highest bitrate for mp3. Never 
heard of 500 k/bits for mp3! Personally I would encode to FLAC (a 
lossless format) then transcode those to mp3 (Lame v0?) for file sharing 
and keep the FLAC files for yourself instead of the tapes.
