When I finally got my RTR down from the loft and converted all my tapes
from the 60's I discovered three things:
i. we put up with truly horrible AM sound quality in those days,
especially in the evenings
ii. the early tapes had become very brittle - handle with great care and
avoid using the FF if you can
iii. tapes left unplayed for many years do leave a faint sound image
from the adjacent layer of tape, it's like a faint echo you can hear
during the quiet passages.
Actually none of the above seemed to matter. You can pretty much get
the music from anywhere if you try, but it was the hand crafted mixture
of music, DJ links and abrupt endings etc that was special. Like the
whole is more than the sum of parts.

Soon after, I sold the RTR deck to my brother and have, up until the end
of last year I think, never played the tapes.
