In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20070504145113.M30946@...> Roger (and all), Yep, I'm an interested party, faced with a horrific inflation in running costs that, when you explain the situation to others, only leads to more questions (and thus doesn't meet the bumper-sticker length that a successful protest would require...) As nasty as the situation is, however, it's going to be difficult for any US-based "rights clearinghouse" to reach across an international boundary with anything stronger than impotence to pursue non-US webcasts. Which makes it an even stupider set of rules. I do find it funny that SoundExchange, the recording industry's proxy in this fiasco, has suddenly begun "reaching out" to web radio and asking for extensions to their deadlines. The cynic in me thinks they're just letting go of a dollar to get a tighter grip. Then again, I also think they've come to realize that by starting with a draconian position and allowing it to become the settled rule, they've succeeded in setting up a situation that, if enacted, will put them out of business. Be careful what you ask for... -Sean (the altrokradio.com guy - go ahead and listen; it's on me ;o) On Fri, 04 May 2007 14:29:41 -0000, roger3905 wrote > Preumably there are interested parties here who have been following > this for some time, so my apologies if I'm coming in late on this, but: > http://www.savenetradio.org/index.html > As I understand it, this is not just a thing that affects our > friends across the sea, but will affect any web station that can be > accessed from the States - which is presumably most of them - so > perhaps we should be worried and making some noise about it...? > cheers R From domesticempire@... It went out every Friday between 1700 and 1800 and was a 'What's on in London' guide for trendy youngsters. It was during this part of his show that Stewpot introduced Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, no doubt to the delight of the sponsors. The sounds of Sgt Pepper's had such a profound effect on John Peel that he burst into tears, so Ed took pity on him and allowed Peelie to take over the programme. (ken garner) Date: Sun, 20 May 2007 23:38:46 -0000 Subject: 'If I hadn't listened to Peel that Day/Week/Month/Year....' Message-ID: The Peel Sessions Book project is now accelerating terrifyingly fast towards deadline, and this is the first of a number of requests I'm going to lob at you all for active, urgent contributions. I'm just about done with the checking-the-data stage, which several of you have been crucially helpful with, now we move on to the touchy feely stuff. TYPE OF CONTRIBUTION: THE NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE As you know, we want to try if at all possible to get the voice of the listener into the book, throughout. My current thinking is to perhaps have drop-in quotes, like break out boxes in the margins of magazine layouts, under the heading A LISTENER WRITES... These could be anything I suppose from a 2 or 3 sentence funny story or anecdote, to up to 130 words of thoughtful memory or reflection. What we're looking for is the crystal clear startling insight or memory flash one has, or something from a letter Peel wrote you when you were 15, or the night listening to the show changed your life. So we're not talking about the special occasion in later years when you actually met John, or queries or appreciation over specific session tracks gleaned from tapes or swapped files; rather live listening memories or reflections in which the show clearly intersects with or effected your life or its subsequent direction. We want them dated as specifically as possible, but at the very least to a particular year. You can post them here on the list, or e-mail me off list if you'd prefer (ken_garner@...). You can write 700 words if you feel the need or want to, but we are unlikely to be able to quote more than 130 max in the book. While all contributions we do use will be acknowledged - please sign yourself at the end in the form you would be happy for it to appear in the book, please, with a location, in case (eg. "Joe Bloggs, Yorkshire") - of course, as I am sure everyone realises, I cannot gaurantee we'll use it, and we reserve the right to edit as we see fit. I have already had unsolicited, moving e-mails that fit this bill from Phil, Marcelle and Tom Roche which I hope they won't mind my considering for this, and more to the point, their messages have encouraged me that there are many more such stories out there, in your hearts and minds. Looking forward to hearing from you, DEADLINES: stories from listening-in from 67-75: WEDNESDAY 23 MAY! storied from listening-in from 76-91: MONDAY 4 JUNE! stories from listening-in from 91-04: FRIDAY 29 JUNE! so why not do it now? thanks ken PS. just to make clear on the technicalities or legalese of all this, your stories or emails are effectively the same status as interviews I am conducting for the book: you do not get paid, and the copyright on your words as may be quoted as a part of the total 'work' remains with the publisher and myself. As I recall, the show also included sessions from (The) Pink Floyd, Tim Rose and the John Dummer Blues Band. So, my recording is dated 11th. August 1968 and contains: You Know Who I Am Bird On A Wire Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye Dress Rehearsal Rag I can verify they're all from that particular show, as all the Peel links on my recording are still intact. However, the BBC's "Keeping it Peel" pages list the session tracks as follows: You Know Who I Am Bird On A Wire So Long Marianne Dress Rehearsal Rag One more thing that might be worth mentioning: the notes I received with this credit the session to Leonard Cohen and the Tony Gilbert Group. If so, I want to know whatever you know, urgently! cheers - ken Yes I have restored most of the Lenorard Cohen TG show from a secondary source as well as my own reel tapes. It contains good quality recordings of the 4 LC tracks. Ken contact me off list and I'll mail you a audio CD, least I can do since your 'In Session Tonight' has been so useful to me over the last 15 years GUY ____________________________________________________________________________________Be a better Heartthrob. I have made it a featured LP in my June 2007 show for Dandelion Radio and play several tracks - am sure Peelie would have played through the whole LP a few tracks a night! Mississippi Fred McDowall NIGHTRIDE In-Reply-To: <72531.98013.qm@...> Message-ID: thanks, guy, and everyone, but I've now found out that both these shows exist in the R1 archive and Hannah is making copies for me to hear, although the Cohen date is the 11/8 repeat TX with the Pink Floyd session on that show. The tracks confusion is explained in IST: Cohen recorded 5 numbers, 4 TX on 14/7, and on the repeat on 11/8, one was dropped in favour of the held-over Dress Rehearsal Rag. The line-up info people have is as I copied from the original contract in written archives: "& Tony Gilbert for 5 musicians incl Dave Cousins Banjo" ken does anyone have memories of hearing it go out, or feelings about it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- In peel@yahoogroups.com, Guy Brown wrote: > > 2.
