And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. Here's what you need to know about what we play: it's our opinion that there's no such thing as a "golden age" - in fact, "golden ages" are overrated by definition. They occur whenever things are good for long enough that pundits step back and say "wow, things are pretty great right now". Problem is, when the pundits have the time to say things like that, it means things have slowed down a bit...in fact, it's almost always an immediate precursor to things not being so good anymore. See, when you're writing about how good things are generally, you're not saying anything about specific good things...and that might be because you're no longer noticing them. So Altrok Radio doesn't think there was a golden age in the late 70s, the early 80's, the late 80's, or the 90's...because there's good new music being made all the time. You've just gotta know where to look. And Altrok Radio tries to make it a little easier for you. We're scanning the shops and trawling the Web, finding as much that's happening now as we can - and then we showcase it for you. All you have to do is tune in. Speaking of new music... And so it's happened with Jason Forrest, who's touring with a new band lineup, as well as with labelmates About (which, in addition to Rutger, its driving force, also features Marg from Seedling.) Turns out they'll all be around toward the end of October, and so I got to wondering - are there any other New Jersey-area iconoclasts who'd be willing to brave the trip to Asbury Park (the most likely venue for such a show) and ensure that the trip is worth their while? (The last time I had this sort of opportunity was in 2003 and 2004, when Seedling and Persil, respectively, came 'round, and Peel actually plugged both shows on his broadcast - I've got a clip of one of the plugs at my site, as it's one of the things I'm most proud of...) -Sean Altrok Radio at http://www.altrokradio.com From domesticempire@... I started writing John in the early 80's from the southern USA saying nice things about his program on shortwave. Then one day on his taped World Service show he intro'd a record and nothing happened, there was some dead air, someone said we'll have to do that again and Peel said "starting from where?" So he re-intro'd the record and the show continued - it was clearly some flub that should have been edited out. And the show still had 2 more repeat airings so I thought what the heck he's answered two of my letters and this can't wait. So I will call Radio 1 right at 12:01AM his time just as he would have finished the domestic show, and say overseas call and see if I can get through. And I did, and he was gracious and said he'd look into the bad edit, and by the way how did I pronounce my name because he wanted to be sure he said it right on the air. So I was impressed with his concern about that. Roche is not a common name in the US but in my (long deceased) grandparent's native home of Listowel Ireland there is Roche gas, Roche toy store, Roche meat market etc. All my life I'd pronounced it like roach, and was subjected to some amount of childhood name calling - Florida roaches are pretty unpleasant - but it wasn't terrible... then my wife-to-be said well it was French before it was Irish if you go back many centuries... and thus it became '"rohsh" .. and my kids have had an easier time I guess. This biz about writing Peel during the SW years was covered in a piece I wrote for a local music magazine right after Peel's funeral. I posted it here first. I used to send people to the magazine's site (as I dont have a webpage and it won some writing award) but it was taken down. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've begun to add features we know you'll like... Thursdays at 11:30am Eastern, Ferris O'Brien hops aboard the Altrok Radio signal to give you a taste of his approach to the world of alternativity. He's bringing you the overflow from his own SpyRadio showcase at Rock 100.5 The KATT in Oklahoma City, itself the lingering legacy of 105.3 The Spy, a legendary indie station in its own right that disappeared one night. No reason to quit just 'cause the station's gone anymore, right? Then at 1:30pm Thursday (approximately) you get to hear me showcase the new stuff we've added this week on the Altrok Radio FM Showcase. New stuff, classic stuff, and Jeff Raspe with his Altrok Radio Underground Pick Of The Week... And on Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies...) But for now - we've got songs to let you know about... This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from: - Sonic Youth - Sunnyvale Noise Sub-Element - The Black Keys - Camera Obscura - Robyn Hitchcock - The Go! Team Plus we've got newly-added music: - Bromheads Jacket - Lions On The Prowl - The Changes - Water Of The Gods - The Church - Block - French Kicks - So Far We Are - Lilys - A Diana's Diana - Mezzanine Owls - Lightbulb - Milburn - Send In The Boys - Mundy - To You I Bestow [Live] - The Pipettes - Dirty Mind - The Radio Dept. - Pet Grief - Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames - Drop The Decade - Something For Rockets - The Line Our Featured Classics: - The B-52's - Planet Claire - Bjork - Isobel - Blur - Song 2 - The Chameleons - Up The Down Escalator - Marshall Crenshaw - Someday Someway - Del Amitri - Sticks And Stones, Girl - Made For TV - So Afraid Of The Russians - Prodigy - Out Of Space - Sex Pistols - Pretty Vacant - The Smiths - How Soon Is Now? There is a nice mix in there of reggae songs, just like JP used to do on his shows. It seems that most rock-oriented compilations ignore the reggae stuff, and THAT's a pity. Most of the tracks are from after bands had made it big - and had dropped off Peel's playlist. This is little more than an exercise in back-catalogue marketing from big record labels. Message-ID: <0J6700KN66PZHJU0@...> Folks, Firstly, the important stuff: Altrok Radio is at http://www.altrokradio.com Please remember to tune in whenever you can - every hour you listen turns into more visibility for the station; we show up higher in search listings, and such like that. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. Now then, to be clear: Altrok Radio is free to listen to, and will be for as long as I can manage it. But if you'd like to listen without advertising (we'll interrupt occasionally to tell you what's coming up on the station) there's a VIP program run by Live365. When you're a VIP, you get access to the commercial-free version of the station, plus all the ads on their website go away. Cost is actually pretty reasonable; the roughly-$15-every-three-months plan seems to be the most popular option. Here's the link if you're interested: http://www.live365.com/rewards/pm?tag=muddychannel And yes, we get a small kickback on that - $1.50 when you sign up, and a penny or so about every three hours you listen. Not much, but we're a pretty lean operation; we'll take what we can get. All that said, bet you're wondering what those new songs we've added are... This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from: - Shiny Toy Guns - The Hold Steady - The Church - Michael Franti & Spearhead - Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames - Something For Rockets Plus we've got newly-added music: - The Bound Stems - Refuse the Refuse - Appreciation Night - Colourfast - Walk - Save The World - Evangelicals - Here Comes Trouble - So Gone - Favourite Sons - Hang On Girl - Down Beside Your Beauty - The Features - Wooden Heart - Interior Demonstration - Head Like A Kite - Noisy At The Circus - Random Portraits Of The Home Movie - IMA Robot - Cool Cool Universe - Monument To The Masses - Jihad Jerry And The Evildoers - Danger - Mine Is Not A Holy War - Milburn - Cheshire Cat Smile - Well Well Well - The Oohlas - Gone - Best Stop Pop - The Receiver - In Tunnels - Decades - The Sharp Ease - Hands - Remain Instant - Takka Takka - We Feel Safer At Night - We Feel Safer At Night - Teitur - Thief About To Break In - Stay Under The Stars - Tigers Can Bite You - Rough Stuff - Downloadable Single - TV On The Radio - Blues From Down Here - Return To Cookie Mountain Our Newly-Added Classics: - Elvis Costello - Party Party - Party Party [OST] - Killing Joke - Kings And Queens - Night Time - Max Q - Way Of The World (12'' Mix) - 12'' Single - Morphine - Super Sex - Yes - Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television - God Fodder - Jonathan Richman - Government Center - Beserkley Chartbusters Volume 1 - Siouxsie And The Banshees - Dazzle - Hyaena - Soup Dragons - Divine Thing - Hotwired - Swinging Pistons - I Love The Sound Of Machines - 12'' Single As always, thanks for listening! - Sean Carolan Altrok Radio On your computer now at http://www.altrokradio.com On the radio Fridays at 10pm, at 90.5 The Night From dunelm@...
