And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've begun to add features we know you'll like... Thursdays at 11:30am Eastern, Ferris O'Brien hops aboard the Altrok Radio signal to give you a taste of his approach to the world of alternativity. He's bringing you the overflow from his own SpyRadio showcase at Rock 100.5 The KATT in Oklahoma City, itself the lingering legacy of 105.3 The Spy, a legendary indie station in its own right that disappeared one night. No reason to quit just 'cause the station's gone anymore, right? Then at 1:30pm Thursday (approximately) you get to hear me showcase the new stuff we've added this week on the Altrok Radio FM Showcase. New stuff, classic stuff, and Jeff Raspe with his Altrok Radio Underground Pick Of The Week... And on Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.) But for now - we've got songs to let you know about. This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from: - The Church - French Kicks - Tigers Can Bite You - Sloan - Rachel Zamsteen - The Features Plus we've got newly-added music: - Beck - Think I'm In Love - The Dears - Death Or Life We Want You - Fields - Song For The Fields - Michael Franti & Spearhead - I Know I'm Not Alone - Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces - Head Like A Kite - Pour Me a Drink! - Kasabian - Empire - Milburn - Lipstick Licking - R.E.M. - Bad Day (Outtake from Life's Rich Pageant) - Stan Ridgway - Hanging Johnny - The Roman Numerals - The Rule Of V - Seachange - No Backward Glances - Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye - The Thermals - Power Doesn't Run On Nothing Our Featured Classics: - The Clash - Janie Jones - Lloyd Cole - Perfect Skin - The Cult - Rain - The Danse Society - Heaven Is Waiting - Electronic - Imitation Of Life - Le Tigre - Punker Plus - Lene Lovich - I Think We're Alone Now - The Skids - The Saints Are Coming - Talking Heads - The Lady Don't Mind (Extended Mix) - The Untouchables - Free Yourself As always, thanks for listening! - Sean Carolan Altrok Radio On your computer now at http://www.altrokradio.com On the radio Fridays at 10pm, at 90.5 The Night From neil_jenkins.geo@... Now, almost 40 years later, listeners will once again experience the dying murmurs of his show when the BBC puts his last Radio London programme back on the airwaves later this month. Peel was forced off air when pirate stations - at the time the only outlet for pop music in the UK - were outlawed in 1967, leaving him high and dry. Luckily, within days he was rescued from obscurity and signed as a launch presenter for Radio 1 and became one of Britain's best-loved and respected broadcasters. Peel would spend two of every three weeks aboard the Galaxy, moored off Folkestone, presenting his midnight show. Because the boat was in international waters, it was beyond the reach of British broadcasting restrictions until offshore stations too were outlawed in August 1967. Peel's final broadcast saw him choosing some of the most popular tracks of his five marine-based months, including then little-known acts Pink Floyd and Captain Beefheart. As he told listeners: "Who can tell what's going to happen from now on? I have no job to go to. I'm not unduly concerned about it though, because something good is going to happen. Good things are happening, and a lot of people are realising what is going on and a lot of people are coming over to our side, so to speak - if there is a side to be taken." That programme has survived in a bootleg tape of the whole five-and-a-half-hour broadcast, put together by an anonymous fan. The recording has now been distilled into four half-hour shows to be broadcast by BBC6 Music from Monday 23 October, to mark the second anniversary of Peel's death. Producer Hermeet Chadha said yesterday: "We have cleaned up some of the sound but not too much. Listeners will once again be able to hear what it was like to listen to John Peel in 1967 as though he was speaking directly to you. It's incredibly idealistic and at his heart he was a real hippie." Indeed, before bowing out, Peel waxes lyrical in typical "summer of love" style: "I may just fade away and disappear, but that's not particularly important. The important thing is that if anybody has gained anything from [the show] and learned that they should try to understand the people that live next door to them or that live down the street and love them, then that's good." Peel's pop picks: where are they now? Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine Then-frontman Syd Barrett was asked to leave in 1968 because of his erratic behaviour. Died in July. The Electric Prunes - Wind-Up Toys The Californian psychedelic legends split in 1970 but reformed in 2001 to record a new album. John's Children - Desdemona Singer Marc Bolan left to form T-Rex. John's Children recorded a new single this summer. The Misunderstood - I Can Take You to the Sun British-based guitarist Tony Hill fronts Fiction. Singer Rick Brown now an "astral gemologist" in Bangkok. © 2006 Independent News and Media Limited From g.j.steel@... Mon Oct 16 11:42:06 2006 From: g.j.steel@... An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.) This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from: - Gnarls Barkley - The Oohlas - Favourite Sons - Electrelane - Seachange - Lloyd Cole Plus we've got newly-added music: - Joseph Arthur - Enough To Get Away - Chin Up Chin Up - We've Got To Keep Running - The Decemberists - The Perfect Crime 2 - The Hold Steady - Stuck Between Stations - Honeycut - Shadows - Larrikin Love - Edwould - The Long Blondes - Weekend Without Makeup - The Noisettes - Malice In Wonderland - The Postmarks - Goodbye - Princeton - Tokyo, Japan - The Rifles - One Night Stand - Spearmint - The Competition - The Sunshine Underground - The Way It Is Our Newly-Added Classics: - Big Audio Dynamite - E=MC2 - Elvis Costello - Senior Service - Devo - Jerkin' Back And Forth - Meat Beat Manifesto - 10 X Faster Than The Speed Of Love - New Musik - Sanctuary - The Ramones - Indian Giver - Siouxsie And The Banshees - Christine - The Smiths - You've Got Everything Now - The Stranglers - Skin Deep - X - The Hungry Wolf As always, thanks for listening! - Sean Carolan Altrok Radio On your computer now at http://www.altrokradio.com On the radio Fridays at 10pm, at 90.5 The Night From martin2@... (Tom Roche) Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2006 22:59:26 -0400 Subject: Liverpool Daily Post and Echo /19 Oct/ Tragedy of brave musician Message-ID: Tragedy of brave musician Oct 19 2006 by Vicky Anderson, Ormskirk Advertiser Popular local band frontman took his life after battling depression, inquest hears A TALENTED young musician took his own life during a bout of depression, an inquest was told. Chris Ashcroft, 29, had been picked out for success by Radio One DJ John Peel who featured his band on his cult show after hearing a demo tape. Chris was frontman with Monkey Steals The Drum who recorded sessions for the John Peel Show in December, 1999, and October, 2000. The band's song 'Injured Birds' was given the honorary number 51 slot by Peel in the top 50 songs of 1999 chosen by listeners because he liked it so much. Peel had called the band "the next big thing to come out of Liverpool." The four-piece, which formed in 1998, regularly performed concerts in West Lancashire and Liverpool, including The Cavern and The Picket, attracting huge support. They also toured the UK. In 2000, their first single outsold Westlife and the Spice Girls locally, but did not chart nationally. But, despite his popularity and success, Chris had battled with depression and on July 21 his body was found by two schoolboys in woodland behind Winifred Lane, Aughton, on the afternoon of July 21. Pathologist Dr Stephen Dundas said that Chris had died almost instantly by hanging himself from a tree. Friends of the former Ormskirk Grammar School pupil, from Middlewood Road, held a tribute gig to him at the Liverpool Everyman in August. At the inquest into his death, coroner Dr James Adeley said: "Christian was a very well-rounded young man. He was a musician, played drums and guitar. He was very popular, he would go cycling in the Alps. "But he had started to have problems with depression." On the day of his death, Mr Ashcroft left the house early and his mother assumed he had taken an early train to the Lake District to meet his girlfriend. She said: "I had no idea he had thoughts like this when he went to bed. He blew me a kiss and said 'goodnight mum'." Police called to the woods at around 4.40pm on July 21, but Chris was pronounced dead at the scene. Dr Adeley said: "There were two notes found that indicated he could no longer bear the problems he was facing. People who are depressed still maintain a very brave front and it comes as a complete shock the events that have transpired. I don't think there is anything you could have detected or done to have prevented this." He recorded a verdict of suicide. In a newspaper in 2000, Chris recalled his first contact with John Peel. "We did a demo on our little eight-track and sent it off. Then, I just forgot about it. The next thing I knew, the phone went. It was him saying how much he loved the demo. I was totally shocked to hear that unmistakable voice." Copyright and Trade Mark Notice © owned by or licensed to Trinity Mirror PLC 2006 icseftonandwestlancs is a trade mark of Trinity Mirror PLC. Message-ID: Just noticed that on the Biography channel tonight (Wed) at 9pm there's a JP documentary. I don't know much about it and as I've been out of the country a lot in recent years it may well be a repeat. Apologies if that's the case, but I thought I'd mention the programme nonetheless. According to details of his will published last week, the broadcaster left more than 1.8 million to his family in an estate which includes around 25,000 vinyl albums and thousands of CDs. His daughter Alexandra said: "We've not had any discussions about what is going to happen to the collection in the long term. For now, it will stay at home." After the BBC stalwart's death at the age of 65, there was speculation that the collection would go to the British Library. But the collection has remained at his Great Finborough home with his wife Sheila. Last year, she told the BBC World Service: "The records here are John and I can't imagine how we all would feel if, for whatever reason, they were suddenly removed from us. It would be just awful. At the moment, it makes us feel rather good that they're all here. And we play them." But she added: "I've got to be realistic and I know that there will be some period when we've got to say 'Come on, be sensible', because there's no way we can play them all or appreciate them all." The DJ's album collection has yet to be catalogued but he was famous for his interest in unknown and unusual musical acts, including being one of the first to recognise bands like Pink Floyd and Blur. A spokesman for the British Library declined to comment on any possible negotiations over the future of the collection. The broadcaster died of a heart attack during a trip to Peru two years ago this week. From robfleay@... Tue Oct 31 10:33:22 2006 From: robfleay@... I used to find him just about bearable, but listening to this show makes me want to throw the radio out the window (not good when you're in the car!) I listened one night in his first week, when he was about to broadcast a documentary during his show, and he was concerned that listeners might find this idea too 'intellectual' for their silly little heads, and so had to keep reassuring them it was OK. After it had finished, he said "when was the last time you heard a documentary start with Primal Scream's 'Loaded'?", as though this was something revolutionary as well. This from the guy occupying PEEL'S old slot, for f***'s sake!! "In nooo myooosic we trust", my arse.
