Rollins is a bit of a Peel fan, he talks about various Peel sessions on other episodes I've managed to find. You can find his comments about the show and the session tracks he plays via the shows official site, here: http://www.harmonyinmyhead.com/playlist_main.html It's the 24/10/06 show, in case you can't see it. Well, you might not... The Rollins archive also has available for download the Peel Festive 15 album. From hubcity@... Mon Nov 6 13:39:05 2006 From: hubcity@... (hubcity@...) Message-ID: <0J8B0064N75CTSM0@...> Folks, Firstly, the important stuff: Altrok Radio is at http://www.altrokradio.com Please remember to tune in whenever you can - every hour you listen turns into more visibility for the station; we show up higher in search listings, and such like that. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. You can find them at the bottom of our main page (and most of our other pages, too.) Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've begun to add features we know you'll like... Thursdays at 11:30am Eastern, Ferris O'Brien hops aboard the Altrok Radio signal to give you a taste of his approach to the world of alternativity. He's bringing you the overflow from his own SpyRadio showcase at Rock 100.5 The KATT in Oklahoma City, itself the lingering legacy of 105.3 The Spy, a legendary indie station in its own right that disappeared one night. No reason to quit just 'cause the station's gone, right? Then at 1:30pm Thursday (approximately) you get to hear me showcase the new stuff we've added this week on the Altrok Radio FM Showcase. New stuff, classic stuff, and Jeff Raspe with his Altrok Radio Underground Pick Of The Week. Both shows are rebroadcast at 11:00pm Eastern. On Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.) And this week, something new: at 11:30am and 11pm Eastern Friday, DJ Shred brings you her classic modern rock set from Luke & Leroy's in the West Village, NYC - and she'll be manhandling the wheels of steel there in person that night, too. Head over Friday evening - Luke & Leroy is at 21 7th Avenue South in NYC - and you can be a part of Shred's next Altrok set! But for now - we've got songs to let you know about. This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from: - Silversun Pickups - The Singles - Joseph Arthur - Michael Franti & Spearhead - The Postmarks - The Replacements Plus we've got newly-added music: - Chin Up Chin Up - This Harness Can't Ride Anything - Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry - Klaxons - Not Over Yet - Nellie McKay - There-You-Are-In-Me - Middle Distance Runner - Naturally - Panda & Angel - Dangerous - The Pigeon Detectives - I Found Out - Riding Paper Airplanes - Thirst For You - Say Hi To Your Mom - Blah Blah Blah - Shout Out Out Out Out - Nobody Calls Me Unless They Want Something - Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames - I Will Meditate And Then I Will Destroy You - The Sleepover Disaster - Hold My Tongue - Some Girls - Poor Man's You - Thailand - Valley Vista Our Newly-Added Classics: - Afghan Whigs - Big Top Halloween - Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You - The Fall - My New House - Guadalcanal Diary - Trail Of Tears - Half Man Half Biscuit - Venus In Flares - The Pretenders - The Adultress (Live) - The Sisters Of Mercy - This Corrosion - The Smiths - Panic As always, thanks for listening! - Sean Carolan Altrok Radio On your computer now at http://www.altrokradio.com On the radio Fridays at 10pm, at 90.5 The Night From mar.celle@... When I try to save the "listen again" file it goes straight to the windows player which won't have any of it. I could contact the owners of the site but there might be others on this site who have overcome some of the technical difficulties I have been having. Can anyone help? Also there is a new plugin for Windows Media Player available at http://www.orban.com/plugin/ : LISTEN AGAIN Welcome to the listen again page for Another Nice Mess! Listen Again is a continuous looping stream of the most recent show. The stream makes use of the latest technology in stereo encoding for streaming and as such requires a very recent player. In order to maximize the audio quality versus the streaming bandwidth we decided to use the new MPEG4 HE AACPlus V2 encoding. This gives a very nice FM quality sound but at a bit rate low enough to listen over dialup. Unfortunately since it is such new technology only a few of the common players work with it so far. As time goes by more and more players will support this format, but in the mean time here are 3 that will work now: WinAmp 5.08 or higher. (for Windows) foobar2000 (for Windows) VLC Media Player (for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Beos, WinCE/Pocket PC) The stream is a constant loop of the most recent show, and it will usually be updated sometime on Wednesdays. If you are having any trouble listening to the stream or if you notice something wrong, please contact [Made Of Ale] and let him know! Is it time to put away childish things? By Jacques Peretti The Guardian Saturday October 21, 2006 Ive done it. I have done it. I cant actually believe Ive done it, but I have (done it). And now Im looking at the floor - at where everything I loved and cherished and held dear to my cold heart used to be - and I cant help thinking it looks wrong. Yesterday, the entire floor space of my dusty attic was covered in records: 30,000 lumps of plastic warping gently in the autumn sun. Records called things like Trance Orgasm Express and Black Magic Horn by long-forgotten people with names such as DJ Spanky; Mushroom Mike and Melting Dolphins (featuring the vocal talents of Janeen). There they stood, like some frightening installation of everything frightening and underground from the 1990s, a few embarrassing, a few rare, believe it or not, and worth an absolute fortune, but the vast majority (all of them basically, bar an armful), 1990s house music in all its pompous glory: when dance music went all Rick Wakeman and prog rock, taking itself so seriously, it disappeared up its own linen-trousered backside. The King (Crimson) of this prog house shit was someone called Sasha. Every Sasha record was identical: thered be a blurry photo on the cover of a moody Sasha on a cliff-top, looking out across the sea to some far-away destination (a place called Meaning). The record would last 45 minutes, with a 25-minute intro of doomy synth washes. This would be followed by a multiple orgasm of drum-rolls and then some woman (Janeen probably) wailing Take Me Higher, Let Me Be Your Fantasy, Come On My Face or some such charming refrain over the top ... Im trying to damn these records to sound modern and with it but truth is I have great affection for this rubbish - it sounds so anachronistic now, its laughable. But at the time, it all made sense and it was rock and guitars, not dance music, that seemed out of date. I remember Bill Drummond of the KLF saying that in the future, there will be no more need for to live music because well have enough samples to last forever. Oh well. Theres wrong and theres Ive seen the future and its shaped like a rave saucer. Im sitting in the living room under strict instructions from the missus to be brutal when it comes to choosing what to keep when sorting my choons. I started out in front of the telly taking them a hundred at a time, putting this Lil Louis French Kiss in the KEEP pile, Phutures Acid Trax in the KEEP pile, Josh Winks Higher State Of Consciousness, hmmmm, in the KEEP pile. This is going well, this sorting out. It takes me only a few minutes to get through a hundred records. How did that go? the wife asks. I have, lets see, ooh, maybe, 96, 97, yup, about, er, 100 in the KEEP pile. Right. And how many in the chuck pile? In the CHUCK pile? Hmmm ... lets see. That would be, er, none. Turns out I was keeping not just the eBay-able records, but the tackiest, cheesiest abominations ever committed to plastic: the rave version of Jump by Van Halen, some speed barrage thing that sampled the Casualty title music with bits of Knight Rider thrown in. I even have a happy hardcore remix of the theme to Bob The Builder. What the fuck are you keeping this for? And why did you ever buy it in the first place? Its good! I reply defensively. Thats rare that. Theres an Erick Morillo dub on the back with no vocals and that is awesome. My wife looks at me with pity. I need a different strategy. I need to chuck the lot. I could put it all on eBay I suppose, but I think my records are better than that. I see myself as some sort of house music curator, like a rave dad version of Charles Saatchi, keen to donate my collection to a deserving museum or library. What the hell are you talking about? my wife says. Take them to Oxfam. So off I go. Im weirdly hyped up as I head off to Oxfam in Dalston - a veritable Aladdins superstore of mauled childrens toys and dead peoples cardigans. Hi, I say brightly. Ive got about 30, 000 records I need to get rid of. The quiet man at the counter looks at me. OK, he replies. Where are they? I take him and four colleagues to the back of the car. I open the boot, half-thinking I should have set up some Raiders Of the Last Ark lightshow to go with the reveal moment. Wow! They are not disappointed. Over the next three hours, we ship the vinyl weight equivalent of nine elephants from my house to Oxfam. Theres some good stuff in here one of the guys says to me when were nearly finished. And some not so good stuff (holding up a copy of Saturday Night by Whigfield (the Brothers In Rhythm remix). That is a credible tune! I shout. The Brothers In Rhythm remix! Its ace! Ask anyone!! Not a patch on this surely he says, taunting me with a Paul Oakenfold cash-in remix of The Lighthouse Family. I was given that! I never bought it ... I never ... bought it (my words petering out). Or this. Nigel Benns rapping attempt to break into the pop business. You bought that?! I do not have words. Or this Blue Pearls Naked In The Rain. I leave, without giving my name. Ive been here before. When I was 16, I sold all my records (about 5,000 that time) in order to pay to travel round Europe (fucking rubbish Europe, shouldnt have bothered). I got about 100 quid from some morose gent in a Cure T-shirt at Record & Tape Exchange. The irony is that all those records I bought when 13, 14, 15 - avant garde mid-1980s indie guitar thrash noise - would be worth a serious amount of money today. They sound like The Killers, whereas house music just sounds weird and gone. Like it never happened. Anyway, I have a plan - now that Im feeling the loss. Im thinking of buying the records back - popping in and paying 50p a time. It makes sense. Its worth it. Join me if you like - Ill be the one clutching The Prodigys Out Of Space and fighting off old people trying to get to the Best Of Barbara Dickson. From hubcity@... I found a solution, though - start digitizing. Connect your turntable to your computer (through, I admit, a complicated series of conversion doodads unless you get - yes, it exists! - a new turntable with a USB output.) You soon move from judging based on sentimentality to judging based on whether it's really worth the effort to digitize the thing. If it's not, great - it goes in the "toss" pile. If you can't stand to put it on your iPod, you shouldn't stand for it taking up living space. (And then I was ready to create an Internet radio station, because I'll be damned if I do this much work without having something to show for it.) Of course, I've managed to toss exactly zero records based on this criteria, but someday... -Sean On Tue, 14 Nov 2006 09:30:07 -0500 (GMT-05:00), troche wrote > http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1927568,00.html > > In the vinyl analysis > Music fans over the age of 30 will have amassed a sizable record > collection over the years, which they rarely play. On house music dating badly, I have found when playing Peel tapes these days how odd it is that some tracks still sound great and others sound terribly dated even though they were top of the form in 1989 or whenever. And this doesn't seem to follow any rhyme or reason. Some dance tracks still sound good and some noise tracks still do too. But other tracks from both genres now sound two-dimensional and dull. The thing is that it was not predictable back in the day which tracks would date and which wouldn't. Regardless John still sounds great. --------------------------------- From: troche@... Vinyl is too precious a thing to squander on convenient gadgets ;-) As for getting rid of clicks, I have been very impressed with a thing called ClickRepair (neat name, huh?) from http://wwwmaths.anu.edu.au/~briand/sound/ I've been using it on a Mac, but it's available for Windows too, and the algorithm it uses is pretty damn sweet. Even just using the presets, it cleans things up really nicely with no discernable artefacts. Well worth the shareware fee, imho, cheers Roger PS. (digital >transfer, i guess) As long as your amp is within reasonable range of your computer a lead (tape out to line in) has advantages (1) You've got more control over the signal (all your amps controls) (2) You can send any signal that goes into the amp - radio, tape anything to your computer to digitise - not just the vinyl (3) You can go the other way - a lead (line out to tape in) lets you put the computer sound through your hifi speakers And of course if you are really up market and have all the necessary inputs and outputs on your amp and computer you can do it all digitally. Personally my ears are old and the highest of fidelity would be wasted on them (even if the original vinyl and tapes were sparkling quality in the first place which they obviously aren't) martinw From hubcity@... To be honest I think this is for the best on many counts. if they ran it on R1 they'd do so out of the Colin Murray slot and that would ruin the chart as far as my tastes are concerned - the changed listenership (e.g. does anyone on this list tune in?) would vote in Oasis and the Zutons and quite possibly Daniel O'Donnell, all at odds with the legacy of great undiscovered music that the chart is famous for. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us. Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've added features we know you'll like... Then at 1:30pm Thursday you get to hear me showcase the new stuff we've added this week on the Altrok Radio FM Showcase. New stuff, classic stuff, and Jeff Raspe with his Altrok Radio Underground Pick Of The Week... And on Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.) As if that weren't enough, Fridays at 11:30 you'll find DJ Shred's live DJ Set as queued at Luke & Leroy in the West Village, NYC. You'll be able to join her as she creates her next one at the club: DJ Shred at Luke & Leroy Friday, December 8th 10pm-Midnight (maybe earlier if the stars align properly) 21 7th Avenue South (between Carmine & Leroy Sts) West Village, NYC But for now - we've got songs to let you know about.
