Musicians' tribute single for Peel

Musicians Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey have
joined a line-up of stars to record a tribute
single to the late DJ John Peel.
It is a cover version of Ever Fallen In Love by
the Buzzcocks, one of Peel's favourite records.
Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks, who wrote the
song, will appear on the single alongside Pink
Floyd's David Gilmour, New Order's Peter Hook and
guitarist Jeff Beck.
Newer acts include The Futureheads, El Presidente
and The Datsuns. Many of the bands owe their
careers to Peel. Gordon Moakes of Mercury Prize
nominees Bloc Party has created the cover art.
Proceeds from the record will go to Amnesty
International, a political campaign group which
Peel supported.
The tribute single is the brainchild of Peel's
son, Tom Ravenscroft. The idea came to him as he
worked on a forthcoming Channel 4 documentary,
John Peel's Record Box, about the DJ's record
collection.
The film focuses on a small wooden box in which
Peel kept his 140 favourite singles - including
Ever Fallen In Love, a song he first championed
on his radio show in 1978.
Ravenscroft hand-picked every artist who appears
on the record. "All the artists on the record
have at some time been played by dad, whether
recently or before I was born, and in some cases
before they were really popular. It's
unpredictable and there's hopefully someone or
something in it for every listener.
"I was astonished and very touched that everyone
agreed to be a part of it and I'm sure that the
project as a whole and the work that has been put
into it would have meant a huge amount to him,"
he said.
Pete Shelley said of the new version: "It is very
eclectic. That was the magic of John, though. He
was somebody who embraced all forms of music over
the last 40 years. The record is released on
November 21 to coincide with Peel's induction
into the UK Music Hall of Fame.

John Peel
It was always assumed that a compilation
commemorating the late legendary BBC DJ John Peel
would be released. The big question was who would
be the lucky few bands to score a spot on the
record.
Well, with so many groups discovered and lauded
by Peel, the makers of John Peel - A Tribute,
decided to shove 40 bands onto two discs,
including Peel faves The Smiths, his hero Lonnie
Donegan and his favourite song "Teenage Kicks" by
The Undertones.
The album hits stores on October 18, just six
days after Super Furry Animals and New Order play
a tribute concert for Peel in the U.K. and five
days after John Peel Day.
If you're wondering why people are making such a
big deal over Peel, go check out your record
collection. That Joy Division disc? Peel helped
launch their career. The Ramones? He had a hand
in their success as well.

suffering a sudden heart attack in Peru.
