Don't ask me how, but I managed to miss the Record Box programme. Does
anyone know if it is likely to be repeated? or even, better does anyone
have a recording - VCR or DVD - which they could copy , or I could borrow?
PLEASE?

'Kid' 'Kid' Jensen is Canadian. I remembering Peel describing the
Sugarcubes as reminding him of 1960s 'arts lab wankery', or something of
the kind.
He did play Birthday' of course', the results of which must have annoyed
him.

Funny that I was just listening to the 1988 F50 and number 20 is The
Sugurcubes 'Deus'. That's 4 places higher than Big New Prinz.

Hearing their inspired cover of YMCA from John's Record Box reminded me of a
fairly recent show when he played it. I remember his comments were superb,
describing the moment where the sax "player" fails to extract a noise from
his instrument as one of the greatest moments in the history of recorded
music! Hard to disagree I find...He also explained in hushed tones that the
record was in his beloved box and was one of his most treasured in his
entire collection.
Anyway, it would be great to hear this show again. Does anyone have it to
hand by any chance? I think it's this one:

Then I guess we could grab the song and the comments and replace the
current version in the torrent with it.

Ah yes, Birthday. I blow the dust off it, and play it once every few
years. Enjoy it, and then put it back to be forgotten again for a few
more years.

i think the box's version came from that show but some, er, idiot edited out
the surrounding comments for the sake of brevity. i will ask, er, my friend
and see if he can do you a fuller version. i personally like the quotes
around the music (let's face it, john was as much as a draw as the records
he was playing) but some people prefer them clean so...

I have a vague plan to collect as many as I can find on 7" myself - I have
about 30 already (including the Bill Oddie!)
Coincidentally I bought the Scrugg 7" a few weeks ago - had been meaning to
get hold of it since Peel played it on a show 15 or so years ago - the
search
function on eBay finally made it possible!
Just paid forty quid for an original mint "Pop a top" - but on the other
hand
I got Nillson "Without you" for 62 pence!
I did notice that whoever wrote out the list didn't seem to know which was
the A-side in quite a few cases!
Cheers!

It wasn't that show Richard. I've just played it. Hbis exact comments
afterward were:-
"At any time, night or day, I can tell you where that record is. I never
let it out of my sight. The note that accompanied that originally back in
1979; The Galactic Symposium was formed by mistake, early in 1979.
On the other side of that is a version of Pink Floyd's Money, which is
nearly as good, but it's the sax solo really I think, that beats all in
that. But what a great track, and how I wish they'd done more"
That is verbatim but the punctuation's mine, which John would have been
horrified but that is how it scans.
Phil (The Pedantic archivist)
P.S.
I bet there's hundreds of "Peel Tapers", out there, kicking themselves for
editing their tapes and missing the absolute gems.
I must admit I nearly fell into that trap when I started taping his shows
in 1987. However, being a pedant, and playing them time and time again in
order to make the compilation. I found that when I'd completed a tape, I
discovered tracks that warranted more hearings and I just couldn't bear to
wipe the originals.
P.P.S.
Apology to Stuart (List Owner). My main P.C. crashed, so don't have e-mail
addresses at present.
Peel Server is back on line. If any of my old clients(or new ones) wish to
enrol. Please e-mail me with subject heading - Peel Server - Enrol.
Server currently stands at 40 Gb (1100 files). NO CHARGE.
Also if anyone has any JP progs. Feel free to enrol and upload.

Yes, our Tom did come over from Atlanta Georgia and accompanied me to the
cathedral, where I made a bit of a faux pas.
Whilst waiting for the service to start (we were probably in cathedral a
good 1 hours before the service commenced). We were sitting at the end of
an aisle and Paul Gambaccini came up and spoke over us to a couple of his
BBC colleagues, who were sitting behind us and further along. He then
asked them some obscure music question (he was probably nervous and
polishing up his eulogy). Knowing that he was one of the contributors to
the Guiness books on music, I quipped "you of all people should know that
one". The look of contempt on his face will be with me for years.

Tom's the taller one at the front and I'm the one fiddling with a camera,
the guy who's partial head you can see behind me, is a friend of John's
who used to run a club which John used to DJ for and best man at his
wedding.
Somewhere behind us, is Jarvis Cocker. Pic 38 is our favourite DJ from The
Netherlands.

I can confirm that Laura Cantrell also made the trip over for the funeral -
there was a very heartfelt description of the event on her radio program
Talking of tributes - there is a short but very much to the point one on

The Christmas issue of Record Collector magazine includes a six page
feature on John Peel's Record Box ("his 140 favourites and how to find
them"). Includes b-sides, labels, catalogue numbers, CD availability,
etc. Plus an interview with Matthew Hodgkinson, a collector and DJ
aiming to find them all. Interesting stuff.

Perhaps it was the 2001 show, although the google link seems to have
disappeared now.

FYI - that awful Hall Of Fame thing is repeated tonight (on More4).
I recorded the original broadcast. Much of the Peel piece is from the
"Record Box" programme. It is the last few minutes of the show - just after
the stumbling rear end of Ozzy Osbourne.
