I distinctly remember listening to the Festive 50 in 1977, having
started listening to Peel in the summer of that year. As far as I
recall he chose the records himself because, although the
demographic of his audience was changing, we still couldn't be
trusted to vote for Smokescreen over Going For The One!
That said, there were still a few unlikely records in there, eg Dave
Edmunds' I Knew The Bride.
Messrs Wall and Heatley list the top 13 in their respective books,
presumably having accessed the Rock List website as part of
their "extensive" research. One day someone might actually go as far
as visiting the BBC's written archives and looking up the relevant
PasB sheet. It wouldn't take a genius to work backwards from the top
13 to reproduce the whole chart.
Incidentally, I'm looking forward to getting the Fall's Complete
Peel Sessions CD box set, but I wonder if any record company might
be adventurous enough to do something similar with Ivor Cutler?
