Well maybe the next two mights will be better, I still feel the best hope will be Rob Da Bank due to his exposure to the whole gamut of the Peel show during his stint before Xmas. The first track he played (by Dutch oddballs Suicidal Birds) would have been lapped up by Peelie - utterly strange stuff. Add to that genuinely great tunes by Fleeing New York, 65 Days Of Static, Phantom Buffalo and Pipettes and I finished the show with a long shopping list of interesting stuff to investigate further - which is what I always appreciated the great man for too. OK, there was no truly mental stuff like Trencher and Melt Banana, and the eclecticism was certainly not up to Peel's levels - but who expected that? I also felt drawn in by Huw's genuinely huge enthusiasm for the music he was playing - something that always set Peel apart too. Plus he seems like a properly nice fella. Having sat through Ras's pretty bland and commercial fare last night, I feel the real shame is we're not getting Huw 3 nights a week. Perhaps this is cynical but the phrase 'heartless cash-in' seems to suggest itself. Nonetheless I tried to approach John Peel: A Life In Music with an open mind - only to have every fear realised. There's virtually nothing here that couldn't be found on the internet; in fact, given the patchy and repetitive style Heatley appears to favour, that's probably the way he and his researchers put this shoddy biography together. Michael Heatley has made regular contributions to the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and edited the Virgin Encyclopedia of Rock. While his style is fine for that kind of basic factual writing, this travesty proves that he's no master of continuous prose. Published by Orion, Heatley's biography contains plenty of filler - indeed, the 11 pages of tributes are actually quasi-highlights in comparison to the 28 subsequent pages listing the annual 'Festive 50' countdown. The biography also features much random and unnecessary information - for instance, Heatley feels the need to tell his reader that LSD stands for Lysergic Acid Diethylamide: all very interesting, but it doesn't really offer much of an insight into Peel's life; wouldn't an account of John's experiences with the drug have been more relevant? Perhaps, but that would require Heatley to have more of a connection to his subject than common roots in Merseyside. It gets worse. Apparently LSD allows people - probably mainly youths - to take "trips" (I quote, unfortunately so does Heatley). Given that John Peel was always at the vanguard of pop-culture Heatley's nannying guide through such specious points is offensive both to any serious reader and to the great man's memory. This said, there are still interesting stories nestled amongst the padding - for instance, the tale of a 24-year-old John ending up at the wrong end of an angry man's shotgun, having just been on the right end of said man's daughter (apparently she looked older than 13...). The book also contains a wealth of details relating to the Peel childhood, which will doubtless be of much interest to the thousands of people who felt a genuine personal connection with the man behind the grumpy-yet-reassuring voice, and will miss him for many years to come. Sadly, Heatley's handling of most of these details is cack-handed at best: yes, Peel's name was originally Ravenscroft; no, we don't need to be reminded on every other page. Happily, John's own memoir (as completed by Sheila, his wife of 30 years) will be released later in the year, and promises to be a genuinely revealing book. Transworld, which has acquired the publishing rights to this autobiography, really summed up the feel of Heatley's effort in a recent press release: "Unlike [some] ambulance chasers ... we have some sense and decency." Brutal, yes; but the man was a broadcasting legend, and he deserves better than half-hearted, money-grabbing efforts cashing in on his name - either of them, for that matter. If you were listening to Radio 1 in the days following Peel's death, you may remember Chris Moyles angrily telling a listener who complained at what he felt was an excessive tribute to "Go screw yourself; we feel like we've lost a member of the family." Many of Peel's long-time fans feel the same way, and this is not the way to keep them happy. This biography is lazy, slap-dash and, when you get down to it, just plain bad. Impatient Peel fans with no ability to perform web searches should go ahead and buy this; the rest of us would be well advised to wait until September, when the man who made himself an institution will get the tribute he deserves. Too many dreadful jingles, too many "shouts" (at one point he went for nearly 3 minutes with these), far too much talking and too little good music. What a strange choice. Huw's show had its good points and if he wants to play loads of Welsh language stuff that's OK by me. However the best show by far, I thought, was Rob's. In fact I though it was excellent. A good range of music, he even started with a 40s country track, plus there's a Low session coming up in the next few weeks! Also I have grown to like his style of delivery, relaxed and not at all slick with a bit of dry humour thrown in. I shall certainly make a point of listening to him every week. I too consider that Ras Kwarme is difficult for us Peel listeners to come to terms with. I have the following criticisms of him (which strike a chord with what you said): 1. He bigs himself up so much. After hearing two of his shows I'm convinced he only plays stuff at the very beginning of his show if it contains the words "Ras" and "Kwarme" in the lyrics! And the first few minutes is just his "jingle" which goes on and on. I don't know about you, but I tend to listen to the show to hear the new music, and maybe some great older ones too that I didn't know about. I don't particularly want to hear about Ras (although I'm sure he's a lovely bloke!). 2. He talks over the music ... to the point of annoyance. John seldom did. Rob Da Bank is good at not talking over the records, and I challenge anyone to find Andy Kershaw talking over any of the music he plays on his Radio 3 show. For me the question is simply this: What's more important ... the DJ or the music? Ras goes on about the importance of the "homegrown" music he plays. Well, if he shut up for long enough I might see what he's on about. 3. His "sphere" is very one-dimensional compared to John's. Ras certainly doesn't have the "what's coming next?" factor. You know that the next record is probably going to be another RnB/hip-hop crossed thing. Huw Stephens does to a certain extent, and I think Rob Da Bank learnt a lot from John's late playlists and the input of Louise and Hermeet. Ras's sphere is definitely quite a small one, on the basis of what we've heard so far. And when he plays something slightly different he make a point of going on about how he likes to "mix it up". Yeah right. However, this is where we should start to be cautious. Remember, John IS irreplaceable. This is a point recognised by Ian Parkinson at BBC Radio and the reason why they've gone with THREE replacements for John in order to replicate as much of the same coverage he had. And remember also that Ras is very much connected to the grassroots of his "scene". Within the RnB/hip-hop/garage scenes he's apparently held in as much regard as John was in tons of others. We should try to remember that Ras is part of a whole ... a very small part of what John would have represented. 4. He makes it very obvious when he plays something he doesn't like. I remember in his first show he played a grime track. He clearly didn't like it, and went on about how people may well find it annoying (because he clearly did) and then proceeded to read out text messages and e-mails over the top of it before letting us hear a minute or so of it then talking over the end!! OK, I like a lot of grime but wasn't overly keen on the one he played. However, that's not the point! Louise told me that she would try to influence what the three DJs played and to get them to mix things up as much as possible. She is very passionate about what John was doing and she dearly wants that to continue. And remember that Hermeet is the assistant producer on Ras's show, which is another angle of influence. I think Ras just needs time to "open up". 5. Is his OneMusic show really any different to what you hear on 1Xtra most nights? Certainly not now, but maybe time is the key. Maybe not. For radio shows, Sarah Nelson (of Listen With Sarah fame) recommends the "Another Fine Mess" show presented by John's friend Marcelle van Hoof on Radio 100 Amsterdam on Tuesdays between 6pm-8pm GMT. Check out http://www.listenwithsarah.org/ and click on "Links" for more info. (While you're at it, why not check out Sarah's album "Are You Sitting Comfortably?" Containing Peel faves and a Festive 50 entry, and one she could do with selling a few more of to break even!) I hadn't really looked at the play list, just took every ones word and gave it a listen(still listening right now). Right in the middle she started talking about X-Ray Spex and then played Oh Bondage Up Yours!, which I had first heard on John's show back in the 70s, and had made me fall for punk rock. It was cool to hear it integrated into the next track and the idea of tying it back to the original was fun. Message-ID: The Fall: The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 out via Sanctuary on March 28, 2005 LONDON, UK (Santcuary Records) - Continuing Sanctuary's Fall retrospective comes The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004. This 6-CD boxed set brings together, for the first time, all 24 Peel sessions that The Fall recorded between 1978 and 2004. The set includes Job Search, recorded for John Peel's 65th birthday and a 30-page booklet featuring rare photos and a full session annotation. The set has been produced with the full cooperation of Mark E. Smith. Earlier in 2004 The Fall's first album 'Live At The Witch Trials' celebrated its 25th anniversary. There aren't very many bands that have been together longer than The Fall and, with a few exceptions, it's difficult to think of any who, like The Fall, have released brand new material every year. Formed at the height of the punk rock movement in Manchester in 1976, The Fall has released around 50 singles, 25 studio albums and perhaps 50 live and compilation albums. In February 2003 they recorded their 23rd John Peel session. Famously the band has gone through numerous personnel changes over the years (there have been over 30 different line-ups so far) but always present is the enigmatic Mark E. Smith - musical genius, obnoxious drunk, Salford's finest poet, journalist's worst nightmare, working class hero. Dubbed 'The Grumpiest Man in Pop', by the NME, Mark E. Smith has been carving his jaundiced signature on the music scene for the past twenty plus years. Rarely tempted to celebrate the lighter side of life, Smith uses humour and horror to illuminate vile hypocrisies and injustices and on stage will work himself into a maelstrom of contempt. © 2001-5 top40-charts.com about | site map contact | privacy From alan@... Two questions spring to mind: a.. What is the artist/title of the old school Detroit-techno sounding track that Dave Clarke span during his ten minutes on the decks? The key lyric was 'Techno City', so perhaps that is the title? Sounds very mid-eighties, but class nevertheless. b.. Does anyone have a recording of Annie Nightingale's show that followed this broadcast? Jane and I were listening to it on the drive back from London, and there were some quality mix sets featured - I'd love to get a copy if possible. My subject line wasnt intended to knock The Fall. One has to know to care, and I just think it might be relevant to consider who will know it the next time there's a new Fall LP out now that their #1 fan/patron isn't around to play it. Over here the Fall is/are way under the radar. I will say this: the band came thru here in '03 after a 10 year absence, and played a horrible show to a sellout crowd in East Atlanta. They came back in '04 to the same venue, people were wise this time, and the house was only 1/5 full, and they put on an outstanding show, just killer. I was one of the 1/5th who had returned for more punishment, and I'm glad I did. A few years ago a guy over in Athens GA put together a bootlegged "compete" Peel Sessions Fall collection, or at least up to 2001 or so, and it ran 8 CD's long. I bought two sets at some expense, and gave one to John, much to his amusement. tom r ps: Oh and gang, when replying to a long post, dont include the entire long post in the reply, OK? makes life a bit more tidy for those of us who get, and must wade thru, the digest version. The BBC own the broadcast rights of their progs and they have an agreement (that they have paid heavily for) which gives them Internet rights for 7 days after broadcast. The records companies own the rights to the records broadcast (and the rights to everything including radio sessions recorded by artists contracted to them). Major labels tend to be very strict about this, indie labels much less so. None of the rest of us have the right to do anything including making copies for others whether given or sold. In practice the degree to which the copyright owners enforce any of this is another matter. The record companies have always accepted that they don't care about people making copies purely for their own use but that doesn't mean they have allowed people the legal right to do it.. I am sure that many of us may have done a little of all this from time to time (says he carefully not looking at the piles of CDs on the other side of the room!) and I would suggest it's in everyone's interest to keep as much of this person-to-person and offlist as possible. You never know who is reading. I remember the slight difficulties that occurred on the Fall list when people were talking about bootlegs when it transpired that one of the copyright holders was actually on the list and funnily enough objected! martinw From rockerq@... If tracks are unavailable then compilations like these may give record companies a kick up the arse as to the fact that there is demand for the stuff. For tracks that are available, these CDs will often act as publicity - if you hear and like a track on your dodgy CDr (no doubt mastered from an 80s cassette of the original radio broadcast) then you are likely to seek out the shiny new jewelcased and sleeved CD in your local Woolworths! It would be interesting to hear the views of any copyright holders on this list, I for one am quite happy for stuff I've been involved with to be released in this way - many of these tracks are not exactly on the radio every day, so potentially people who buy these things are going to hear a lot of stuff they may never otherwise get to hear. Amazon only lists one, from '94 on Sonodisc. I have one, called W.B.B.F. on the Twiga label from Vancouver, It had no barcode and no number and when I play it in iTunes, it finds no web data on it. It does have Peel's favourite, "Ba Yaya." Found it used for $2.95 at Amoeba in LA, an astonishing California record store/chain if you find yourself Out West. The Sonodisc reference reminds me of a hilarious story Peel told on air once, actually bringing in Kershaw on-mike to hear Peel's story of being at some French or Euro music confab where he tracked down the Sonodisc representative. Does anyone remember hearing this? He met with this Sonodisc guy who Peel described as looking like a French Alexi Sayle in a too-small suit. Tried to tell him how he was playing all this Sonodisc soukous on the BBC he had purchased with his own money -- all the while the rep was interrupting to take phone calls in mumbling French. Asked nicely if he could get promo service and the rep "could. not. have. cared. less.," Peel exclaimed. Kershaw was laughing uncontrollably.... tom From morriso@... For example, after falling in love with "Aminal Hop" I fell DEEPLY in love with Sarah (musically, of course) when I first heard John play "Om-Pa-Cha-Pap-Cha-Pap" on air. You're right about the album. Here's what my friend Mark says about her album (he puts it better than I could) ... "... I received my copy of [Are You Sitting Comfortably?] a few days ago, and I am so amazed by her stuff. I will write to her next and let her know how much I enjoyed her music. Also, I would like to run a free ad in the next Researcher [the magazine he edits] for her album ..." Visit www.listenwithsarah.org and order your copy if you haven't already!!! You KNOW you want to!!! :-) And 14 great tracks, including a Festive 50 entry(!), for only 8 INCLUDING P&P!!! N Andrew Morrison wrote: True, true. Her 'Are You Sitting Comfortably' album has more depth than the cat-sampling 'Animal Hop' that Peely played suggested. Nice stuff. Andy Neil Jenkins wrote: Indeed, Andrew. But it would be a great shame if people went to that MP3 directly, thereby passing and not noticing Sarah's great website at www.listenwithsarah.org (would it not?)! ;-) N Andrew Morrison wrote: Talking of Listen With Sarah, she has a new track at her website that I'm sure Peely would have played, as it features him (and some profuse swearing). Sarah had started it before his death, but I'm positive this would have got a play: http://freespace.virgin.net/sarah.peter.nelson/Listen_With_Sarah_Cuntry_Music_Peeled.mp3 - it's entitled DUELLING DJs - PEEL vs HARRIS (Cuntry Music), and features vocals by John Peel, Bob Harris, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. pointless, but fun. My problem is that he only plays Urban music. I'm not really sure what defines Urban music but I do know it's just too narrow for me. I like that he plays Broken Beat And African music, but I can hear that and much more on Benji B's show on One extra. There you can expect to hear anything from Pantone to Milt Jackson. Or again I can listen to Patrick Forge or Gilles Peterson and they both play a wider range of music than Ras. Why isn't Ras playing Conya Doss for the soulies amongst us? Why isn't he playing really bouncing new rap like Typical Cats? I have no objection to black music in any of it's forms. In fact I came to John's show in 1980 because he played what I still consider to be the best deep soul track of all time, Peggy Scott's Every Little Bit Hurts. John's never played that one since and the shame is I just know Ras will never have heard of it never mind think of playing it. The thing about John was that even if you were really into black music he would still play old stuff you never heard before. I imagine Ras doing that for me. Most of the Reggae tracks he plays wail have been played weeks even months before by Robbo Ranx or David Rodigan. When John played one it was generally no more than a week old and if you collect 7s like me you know, much older than that and you can't get the vinyl anymore. Ras seem ok. He certainly has a good radio manner but his knowledge of his field is just not deep enough for me. It's certainly not wide enough. This has turned into a bit of a rant, but I'm really not happy with the musical tunnel Ras is going down. I think the other two nights are really good. Rob got off to a flying start but Huw's shows just keep getting better. His unsigned showcases have been the best by miles so far. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: From d.mckinnon@... He also makes a big thing that he plays almost exclusively "UK music". I'm sure I'm not the only one who isn't really bothered where something originates from, so long as it is good. All he's been proving so far is that we can make music just as badly as anywhere else in the world. > Ras seem ok. After his first show I posted on this list saying that he seemed pleasant enough and that the music was bearable. I now realise that I was being far too concilliatory. Christ, his second show was an absolute nightmare. The first 15-20 minutes were given over to him playing jingles and records about himself, then a host of records that would have been rejected by Craig David as being too dull. His third show featured Benjamin Zepahania and the interview/contributions from BZ at least cut down on the air time for Ras and his ego. I did worry slightly though about the audience that his shows are aiming for when he invited questions/comments for BZ and the ones he chose to read out were along the lines of "What car do you drive?" and "Can you tell Benjamin that we think he's well fit?". The Rob shows are pretty good. The Huw shows I've only heard bits of. I think he could still do with broadening his output from the "if it's Welsh, it's in" philosophy, but I think they are improving. dougal mckinnon senior applications developer information services Tel: 01782 294832 E-mail: d.mckinnon@... I know I don't. So, anyway, now, I'm very happy you liked it. It is in the archives at http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/peel/message/2558 It was a ton of work and I was paid nothing - maybe I could somehow sell it on e-bay, ha ha. Ya know on the plane back I spent about 5 hours filling up nearly a whole yellow legal pad on notes, thoughts and remembrances of the funeral in Bury St Edmunds. And I've not had any time to even read THAT, and I wrote it! tom Yahoo! Groups SponsorADVERTISEMENT --------------------------------- Yahoo! There is a link on the site for a "Ripper" which works with winamp for saving the stream, failing that, contact me (off list). Apologies for banging on about this programme, but if you were a "real" Peel fan, then I feel it my duty to inform you about this show. In the same way I felt obliged to preach the "gospel according to Peel" to those I met and found to have a "real" interest in music. In the early days following John's sad passing, we were all doing a lot of "head holding" and saying "what are we going to do now" (reminescent of an early Spike Milligan Qn sketch). Personally, I feel that now that we have Huw, Rob De B and now Marcelle (some may even include Ras, but the jury's still out on that one), we have much much more than we were entitled to expect. After all we now have 6 hours a week of "decent music". Between the 3 (possibly 4) of them, they are truly "Keeping It Peel". Personally, I find that's all I can manage (including the repeat listenings), being an "old git" but having a young family. Just to put Marcelle's show in perspective, Amsterdam radio 100, as I understand it, is a collective of DJ's who "pay" the station to put on their shows. So, give it a whirl. Phil
