Their strictness is what makes Oink's tracker work well so it's a bit difficult to identify new members that you've never met before. Incidentally there was a recent poll where the majority of members decided favourably for a section devoted to unsigned artists to publicise their work: http://oink.me.uk/polls.php Martin Wheatley wrote: > At 10:18 02/08/2005, you wrote: > > > >Sounds great - do they include JPs narration ? > >Also, I can only get into Oink with an invite > >from a member. In a few weeks I'll maybe post out a couple of cd's to the same people as before and my Finnish mate, Ville, will sort out a torrent on a different site. ---- Phil ----------------------------------------- Email sent from www.ntlworld.com Virus-checked using McAfee(R) Software Visit www.ntlworld.com/security for more information From davie@... Never seen a list myself... Martin knows this already i.e. the 50s are listed at http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm but it's a timely bit of info to repost every so often. There's annotations with some of the years - e.g. for 1987, "The Fall, in an LP-less year - there is a new album due at the end of February - have but three entries, two derived from a BBC session." While in 2000, we find "33 'Wonderwall' (session) - Catpower" That said, quite often I can recall John playing the session version of a song during the Festive 50 (even though people would probably have been voting for the song, which was on record), for apparently no good reason other than it sounded better - though this might have been a good 'needletime' getaround for shows heavy on records and light on sessions. Most of the shows aren't complete having been originally recorded onto C90 cassettes, but having listened to them all I would say that they are still well worth having. One of them is the first ever show from Peel Acres. The shows are in 128 CBR MP3 and here is the link to the torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3373274 Most of the work (conversion etc) has been done by Ville and the original source tapes were kindly supplied by list member Herra Gee from Pori, Finland. There are many more of these tapes and these will hopefully be shared before too long. While Ville is organising the technical side of things I'm happy to mail a couple of copies of these shows to people who don't feel too at ease with the torrent downloading aspect of this or maybe don't have a fast enough connection etc. Maybe I could supply a couple of people and they could then pass on a further copies to others if requested? It will take two cdr's for the 19 shows. We have tried to supply an accurate tracklisting but please feel free to correct us or to fill in any gaps. It's difficult to find info for some of these tracks and we probably a few mistakes. The tracklisting textfile is included in the torrent and the tracklistings are also embedded into the individual files. Phil From thebarguest@... Mon Aug 22 23:54:08 2005 From: thebarguest@... Martin Wheatley wrote: John Peel Day BBC Radio 1 is to dedicate a day of programming on October 13 to the late DJ John Peel. Concert venues around the UK are being invited to stage gigs under the banner Peel Day. Peel died of a heart attack while on holiday in Peru in October 2004 at the age of 65. Peel worked at Radio 1 for nearly 40 years on his own late-night show. Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "Peel Day is about celebrating John's legacy and his unrivalled passion for music. "It'll be a day of gigs taking place up and down the country, something we feel will be a fitting tribute to John." A gig in London is also being organised prior to the day, with details to be finalised at a later date. Peel's widow Sheila said: "John would have been honoured and fairly amazed that the anniversary is being marked in such a way. "He would appreciate that in years to come Peel Day will give new bands across the country the chance to be heard." I recorded it - around 200MB. It is repeated later today. The show is made from old shows from the archives - as BBC 7 usually does when it runs one of these long sessions. They were largely chat programmes featuring John talking about his history. Walters and Peel programme about John Peel's background in music (seems to have been cut short though - it was about 30 minutes) - "Peeling Back The Years" - from Radio 1 on 26/9/87 "Radio Radio" from Radio 1 8/2/86 - this particular show was John talking about his radio career. A few bits and pieces - including an interview about his start at Radio London and BBC - plus the retelling of how he met Sheila and talking about the football disasters. John's piece on Radio 4's "Fourth Column" from the end of 1994 was a "Grumpy Old Men"-style moan about all sorts of things including motorway middle lane sitter. Chain Reaction from Radio 5 - where X interviews Y and then Y interviews Z possibly 14/12/92 - David Gedge from Wedding Present interviews John Peel possibly 15/12/92 - John Peel interviews Ian Rush Peel and Walters trail for upcoming shows as played on Alan Freeman's show - featuring various remarks about Tony "Pointy Nose" Wilson (Alan Freeman's producer who had the previous week banned their trail as it was too long) Part of a Home Truths episode from 27/12/03 Then a piece from the funeral that the children wrote (read by a friend) Then the Kop singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" followed by the Undertones and Teenage Kicks Paul > -----Original Message----- > From: peel@yahoogroups.com [mailto:peel@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of > cynicaldj > Sent: 27 August 2005 08:14 > To: peel@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [peel] "Purely Peel". > > > Hello All, > > As if the excitement of 30th August when changes are made to Peel > F.M. isn't enough, I have just been advised that on B.B.C. 7 or > www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 from 0900 hours today, Saturday 27th August, > Steve Lamacq presents a three hour Tribute to John called "Purely > Peel". > > Apologies for the late notice with this, I've only just been told > about it, and I have been very busy lately. > > For your information, B.B.C. 7 is available on Digital Radio and the > Internet. > > Thanks for reading, > > Goodnight. Ah but, ah but, ah but ....... I wish these programs would do more than the predictable cut-and-paste of old and new interviews / narrations, tiny edits of the introduced songs. They all seem to be aimed at people who knew nothing about him. Is this modern media's "dumbing down" ? Channel 4 did good when they repeated a whole, uncut program of Peely visiting Oxford bands last year. MTV2 did excellent when they had a 4-hour video-show of Peel "faves" through the years - I'm really hoping they repeat it in a few months. Why don't the BBC repeat say, one FULL peel show from each decade ? Surely they have them on tape. Or the FULL "Desert Island Discs" program - that would say a lot about the man. Yes, they did have a show around JP's 60th birthday which was full songs in video/film format - that was repeated last year. Is that the exception that proves the rule ? Sorry about the rant - I'm never satisfied ! Regards, Mr Eek-a-Spider-in-my-Bananas From dunelm@... Sat Aug 27 22:39:37 2005 From: dunelm@... A repeat of Desert Island Discs (did Peel ever do Radio 3's Private Passions?) would certainly be most welcome. My own hope is for the BBC to rebroadcast all six Peeling Back The Years programmes from 1987, the full 45 minutes each. (Today's broadcast of programme #1 was cut to less than 30 minutes). It's infuriating that between 9am on Saturday and 6am on Sunday, BBC7 will devote nine hours to Peel, but still can't find time to broadcast this stuff in full. This week's Radio Times (page 126) refers to a "raft of TV programmes scheduled to commemorate him on the first anniversary of his death", so we shall have to see what late October brings. I'm hoping for the Arena special from 1980/81-ish. On a separate note, Margrave of the Marshes (Peel's half-written autobiography) is to be published on cassette as well as in book form. Has anyone heard anything about this? Will it be Sheila reading from the book, or what? From neil_jenkins.geo@... Sun Aug 28 11:05:54 2005 From: neil_jenkins.geo@...
