Google will probably find lots of people talking about them. They range in cost from about 60 to 100 pounds. The advantage of the using a DVB card is that you can record the compressed broadcast directly. DVB uses "MP2" compression, which is similar to MP3, and most MP3 players can play back the MP2 files created when you record from those cards. The advantage is that playing back the recording sounds identical to listening to the live broadcast. Unless you're using Linux, I can't help with software recommendations. Dave. From martinw@... It's a great solution. I bought a Sony:- - I connect it to my hifi amp in the same way as I used to connect my cassette recorder - I set it to LP2, meaning that a single disc will record for something like 2.5 hours - I press the 'go' button at five minutes to ten, and cancel the hifi speakers..... and go to bed! It records and then turns itself off without further attention. Quality is much better than those hopeless old cassettes, and approaches CD - though MiniDisc _does_ use data compression. The editing facilities are excellent - mark and keep the songs you like, bin the rest, and there's still room on the disc for another few days' worth. Jump from marked track to marked track like on a CD player. Maybe go back and review your selections, keeping some, binning others, burning some to a CDROM if you like (whoops, tsssk, etc)...... Or simply delete the entire disc and start again (they are said to last indefinitely, though I find that the mechanical wear and tear factor sometimes - sometimes - comes into play with well-used discs). I play it back through my home stereo, via the CD-IN jack on my car system, on headphones on the bus, on other peoples' systems, wherever... My old Yamaha cassette recorder has been consigned to the 'old technology' stack. That stuff dates from the 1960s....there is absolutely no comparison with the new digital recording stuff, which wins hands down every time, believe me. Firmly recommended H From spreadthelove@... (Bruno Schmidt) Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 12:37:00 +0000 Subject: recording peel Message-ID: hello, i noticed that you have had problems recording the online streams so maybe this will help. the best way of recording these online streams is to grab the actual file off the site. this way you are getting the best quality clone in compressed format...it'll be an exact copy that hasn't gone through your soundcard. anyway, i'm not sure what kind of stream it is, i am guesing real audio as that is what i'v downloaded from the bbc site. there are 2 programs which help out greatly. first is URLSNOOPER. most times when you click on a file, it has some long, long address that is called a "referer file". it's not the actual file. with urlsnooper you file out the address of the actual source file (rtsp for real audio, mms for wma, etc). once you have the source address, you can simply copy and paste it into STREAMBOXVCR. normally those files are small and you can download them faster than listening to it online. i recall streamboxvcr having a real audio to wav function so you can convert and burn away. also, you can program it to record at specific times. also the advantage of downloading the actual file is that you get problems if you lose the stream in the middle of recording. you've got it on your hd! hope that helps. bruno ============================================================= as july & the new radio 1 timetable draws nearer I'm looking for an easier way of recording the peel shows.
