I've wondered this before too. I reckon if Peel goes, Radio 1 would assume that The Evening Session would keep us Peel fans happy, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We don't always want to hear new stuff, and I enjoy John's show for the almost didactic content from many different genres in the past (helps me on my Entertainment Technology degree).

Naturally, I'd volunteer to replace him, but at my tender late twenies age I don't have the vast knowledge (or record collection) to do it justice - but at least I'm into all types of music, other than just Steve Lamacq's indie-dance-dodgy nu-metal fascinations.

Maybe we should get John cloned?

What the?? Is this a fairly good indication that when Peel retires or croaks that R1 have no intention of replacing him with something even vaguely interesting?

Still at least the 4 weeks off gives us chance to listen to the Late Junction on Radio 3
