I think it'd be quite sad if they went to this system- it's much beloved of local radio and will mean radio One sounds even more generic than the likes of Emma B and Dave Pearce can make it. A pal of mine works in local radio and is contract-bound to say "all the fresh music" or whatever in every link. he also can't diss anything he plays. I'm still amazed that he managed to get a 'second wind' during the top 10, which certainly had me drifting off. Still, Saloon at #1 is OK by me, it's a great LP (even if there are a few better tracks than the recent Track & Field single...hmmm, perhaps there was a pre-emptive strike...) and at least 'my lot' got a couple of entries. No, not such a big surprise - they did remarkably well last year, if you remember - for a band who release their most easily accessible material on limited edition 7 inch singles. The significant difference was that "Girls Are The New Boys" is a well-established live favourite AND it's been released as a 7 inch single AND it was included on the album (unlike "Impact", "Freefall" and "Have You Seen The Light?"). I don't know how many of you know me from the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.* newsgroups, but I've just started posting my own "Festive 50", and ... this is going to spoil the fun a little bit, but ... Even the Cinerama stuff IMO wasn't as good this year as last, so it might be an indicator of the overall standard. But still miles ahead of the likes of Miss Black America (dull), Pinhole (a campaign, and not by fans, I suspect!) and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's (simply unbearably tedious - you know how you're often dying for the record to end so you can get to the top of the chart; that feeling crept over me many many time in the top 10. So for me, Saloon was perhaps appropriate at #1 - one of the dullest, wash-all-over-me records I've heard in quite a while. Doubtless that will upset those of you who voted for it, but just my opinion (I quite liked Saloon's split 7" of a couple of years ago but their newer ones in the F50 weren't a patch on that). Really, the problem for me is it now stands there in history, alongside the likes of The Smiths, Joy Division ,The Fall and the Pistols, as an all-time great. Bah humbug! Well - Saloon traditionally send an email out in early December to their mailing list "reminding" people to vote for them in the F50...whether this makes it a campaign or not is arguable. I can't see people bothering to email in a vote if they don't like the band, so you could say it's a measure of how enthusiastic their fanbase is... I always used to think the most interesting stuff would appear between 50-40 and that most of the stuff below that would get blander as you approached the top spot. This year I thought the best stuff was between 30-20. I see this as an indication of my advancing decrepitude rather than a decline in the quality of the records! Add to that the disturbing fact that all three of my votes got in for the third year in a row and you might as well shoot me now. Is it just me or were a few of the records in there actually released last year? Marc Smith 'Identify the beat' was first played on the Peel show in 2001 - I remember it well - and the White Stripes and Jeff Lewis tunes come from records which say (p) and (c) 2001... (although 'Dead Leaves' was a single this year though?) And come off it with the Saloon bashing - them and Ladytron were the best choons in there that I didn't actually vote for. Apologies for all the bah humbuggery, I was just surprised that a 'wee' band like Saloon, with their correspondingly small fanbase, could overhaul larger acts like Cinerama, especially the more Peel-endorsed ones like the Delgados (and ones who are in both categories like the White Stripes.) It probably was an unusual year with no activity from traditionally large acts like The Fall, and no big thing coming through like The Strokes, say. I also felt that Low's F50 tracks - whose album I've not got - sounded really weak. (Of course I preferred the earlier stuff). I saw them at the Chapel in Islington prior to the release of Trust, but they did play quite a few songs from it - and they were magical live. I'd go again. As for the F50, this year for the first time I appreciated why Peel finds the whole thing so dull. Usually I listen in hoping to hear some great songs that I've missed during the year. This time, all I heard was safe-sounding popular choices. Peel's programme retains its freshness precisely because he plays what he wants, not what any committee or fanbase requests. Not that I love everything he plays, by any means, but I do love that he plays it. On another note, anyone else notice that for 32, i think, john announced that the track was 'mannequin hand trapdoor reminder' from the boom bip album, but 'roads must roll' was the track played with no comments or anything. does anyone know out of interest which was the correct on?, tracklisting doesnt seem to be on the radio 1 site that i can find yet? a bit of a stupid point, yes, but perhaps john was as bored as i was by then. I think we have to assume he played the wrong track - it's not the first time he's done it, and probably won't be the last. He commented after the tune was played - " ... on this occasion featuring Dose One". Now, this isn't exactly my specialist subject, but I believe that Dose One is a singer/rapper/MC - and (IIRC) the track he played was an instrumental? Mostyn
