Peel, 62, is the only original BBC Radio 1 DJ still left at the station and said he had been feeling progressively worse and had to go to sleep up to three times a day. He still presents a two-hour show from his home studio for Radio 1 three times a week. He felt "strangely pleased" that it was diabetes after worrying that he was suffering from a terminal illness, he said. "I've felt terrible, off and on, for years, but had assumed it was part of the ageing process," he wrote in the latest edition of the Radio Times magazine. "Worst of all was the fatigue. I had reached the point at which I needed three lie-downs a day. "I also felt, as Led Zeppelin would have put it, dazed and confused." He was diagnosed at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, and is now treating himself with insulin. "At last, all the symptoms I had been generating and self-diagnosing as terminal had been gathered together, given a name and a treatment. Anniversary "The treatment, insulin, I inject into my abdomen, an area in which nature has been particularly generous to me." "I'd rather not be doing it at all, of course, but I have to say I feel better already. Much better." Peel was the first DJ in the UK to give exposure to punk, reggae, hip- hop and rap, and recently celebrated his 40th anniversary as a DJ with a party where Pulp, Nick Cave and Billy Bragg performed. Sorry that I spammed the list like that but I just wanted to root for the hometown boys a bit... It still remains unclear whether they will or will not record a Peel Session while in the UK. At the moment its up Peel himself, as no-one in the band remembered to inform him of their coming over there. Subject: OTC 10/07 0831 FEARGAL WILL NEVER GET HIS TEENAGE KICKS AGAIN Oct 07, 2001 (WENN via COMTEX) -- Former UNDERTONES frontman FEARGAL SHARKEY has ruled out ever singing the band's big hit TEENAGE KICKS again. In a sensational new movie called Teenage Kicks - The Undertones, the singer speaks for the first time about his days in the band - who have since reformed without him. He says, "There are an awful lot of wounds between me and the others. And they will take a long time to heal, if they ever do. I don't think anyone in the band has the motivation to go through that healing process, and that's okay with me." The moody singer feels he is now far too old to sing the band's seventies hits onstage again. He adds, "It would be a bit corny to go back onstage and start singing Teenage Kicks again." In the film, guitar player JOHN O'NEILL reveals that Feargal had has nothing to do with his old band mates for 16 years. He says, "There was tension there from day one and eventually it all fell apart. We were always divided." (RXT/INW/RP) From morriso@... Wed Oct 17 22:41:19 2001 From: morriso@...
