(Tom Roche) Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 17:45:13 -0500 Subject: Pirate Radio Hall Of Fame Message-ID: I've come across an interesting archive of old pirate radio tapes on a sort of UK Pirate Radio Hall Of Fame website. There are bios and photos of something like 150 Pirate DJ's for around the 1960's, and vintage program tape samples for over 100 of them. Peel is there of course, and there's an entertaining clip, about 3 minutes long, of some intro's and outro's of some records Peel played on Radio London including "the new LP from The Incredible String Band." The tape is probably from 1967 or '68, and has a number of lovable trademark traits that persist to this day, such as potentially empty promises to play something or other next week if he remembers. Plus hippy drippy "Zodiac Contest" results, and intro-ing I'm Only Sleeping as "these are our leaders." Very entertaining, see http://www.offshoreradio.co.uk/direct.htm tom in atlanta From stuart@... (Never thought I'd ever say that, since the last one in 1980 or so!) I must say I didn't think too much of the stuff he did late last year, which prompted Peel to book him (maybe it was him doing oldies which I've heard too often already) but I thought the new stuff sounded really good... and Down in the Park also reworked ok. Best one was the one with 'Messiah' in the title (?) which sounded like a doomy David Holmes. Anyway, nice to see people can be so forgiving... Stuart From andy.smith@... Best one was the one with 'Messiah' Down In The Park was great, I didn't enjoy the other stuff so much. I think I preferred the old "slightly crappy" Tubeway Army sound to the modern, industrial perfection approach. Does the new Murry The Hump single signify that the album is imminent? I like the track but on a first listen I thought the production was a bit "nice". Still, if that's what they're after it's fine, I'm just used to the live version after their numerous Oxford visits. I'll grow to love it. Andy From me@... Thu Feb 8 17:22:16 2001 From: me@...
