Walters began his broadcasting career on Radio 1 in 1967 and was best known as the producer of Peel's groundbreaking music show, Top Gear. He also presented a number of shows on BBC radio himself, including Walters' Weekly on Radio 1 and Idle Thoughts on Radio 4. Walters was also a trumpeter with the Alan Price Set, who once played on the same bill as the Beatles. He retired from the BBC in 1991. Helen Boaden, the controller of Radio 4, today paid tribute to the broadcaster. "John Walters was a wry and witty broadcaster of immense experience. We shall miss him," she said. Walters took a degree in Fine Arts at Durham, and as a student exhibited his paintings beside those of David Hockney. He then reviewed records for the Newcastle Journal and lectured in jazz history at evening classes. Soon afterwards he joined the Alan Price Set and spent four years on the road in the 60s, during which time he played at the Albert Hall and the Paris Olympia. Walters teamed up with Peel for Top Gear in 1969, a partnership that lasted 12 years. He was also an occasional broadcaster on Start the Week and wrote pop columns for ZigZag and Honey. Sounds interesting. Tried hanging about in several newsagents this afternoon in an attempt to find the thing and read it without buying the magazine, with no success whatsoever. Was spotted furtively scanning the magazine racks (while shading my eyes from the top shelf, obviously) but all the attention I drew to myself made me sweat a bit in the sweltering haze of mid afternoon and look even more furtive and nervous. Eventually I was driven from the shop by a band of giggling girls. I feel so ashamed. Anyway, thanks Jason Robarthes From janrobertson@... Fri Aug 24 23:09:42 2001 From: janrobertson@... "BBC institution John Peel presented a fascinating counterpoint [to DJ sets from Jim O'Rourke, Steve Shelley, Rune Kristofferson]. Opening with three minutes of a triumphant Liverpool FC match, he moved backwards to classic roots reggae before picturing the last 30 years of pop through a particularly British lens. Leaping across time and space, Peel drew connections between US R&B and Jamaican reggae, dancehall riddims and Acid House rumble. The subtext of his set was a strangely populist argument, conveyed in his penchant for dodgy dance tracks, including an interminable Happy Hardcore remix of Air Supply". I love that the writers think John has some subtext to his selection rather than just playing cuell music, and like Peel 'leaping across time and space'!! And part of the journey included an extended weekend at Peel acres, with my wife and children along too, thanks to John's unexpected invitation. And before leaving I promised the list I'd report back to this list on the day of a Thursday program. But the Thursday I was there was the night the Barcelona set aired, so I missed seeing a show go out from Broadcasting Cottage. Instead I got to see the odd sight of John sitting in his own kitchen listening to his own show on the small kitchen stereo, and reliving the week-old glory of his triumphant Barcelona DJ set. Anyway there is much more to tell, but it seems to me to be somewhat gouache or whatever to just force story or three on the list unless there is really some interest in just how he puts his shows together, sorts his music, accepts or rejects stuff... this is the sort of thing I saw. Anyone interested? Any questions? As for Cowcube, the Stowmarket sampling/collage/musician/programmer John was praising tonight... ya oughta just send Cowcube an e-mail to whatever the address was and get his CD. His name is Paul actually, and I sent him an e-mail months ago and we met up in Stowmarket so I could buy his CD from him eliminating all the middlemen. It is one of my favorite CD's of 2001, in my top 3. Peel called this a demo CD, and I think this is because Paul told me he'd taken the disc down to London and shopped it around to labels and all agreed it was great. And some agreed they would give it a legit release but only if he would please eliminate about 70% of the samples (!) which ain't gonna happen says Paul. He was rather despondent about it in fact, after all the work he'd put into it. So its a great piece of guerilla art, and damn funky and LOL funny at times too and you should support your local copyright liberator, in my view. tom in atlanta From rlawson@... John invited me to his house many years ago but i had no time to take him up on his offer. even though my wife and i managed to sit in the BBC studio in Portland Place while he was doing his show, i can't imagine that it would compare to his own home ? does he still drive the old beat up Mercedes ? if you think people are not interested pls reply off list. thanks Rob p.s the cowcube CD is excellent although in truth i preferred a few of the versions he played when he was "in session" to those on the CD.
