My imaginary money for number one is on 'There Is A Light
That Never Goes Out'. For some reason I think that it will
get more votes than than 'How Soon Is Now' - because it's a
bit more upbeat? But it all depends -as everybody's noted-
on the people who voted: the people who came of age with
punk, or with Joy Division, or with The Smiths, or
Nirvana, perhaps.
What interests me is whether the appeal of punk/new
wave was more ephemeral, more to do with being young/there
at the time. Did the people who voted for all those
punk/new wave tunes in 1982 now vote for Nick Drake etc.
because they've mellowed with age? (if they voted at all).
And I'm just as biased -I was 17 when 'The Queen Is Dead'
came out.
