"oh shit"

I think we should cut the Great Man some slack here. Dave Pearce may appear
to be able to play tracks at the right speed, but all he has to do is press
the "shuffle" button on a CD player containing "Now 42" (or wherever they're
up to these days. last one I bought was 4, I think). The Great Man, by
contrast, gets thousands of different bits of vinyl, mostly with either (a)
willfully arty graphic design which makes it impossible to learn anything
about the record, let alone the speed, or (b) white labels with no info
whatseoever. A loose photocopied sheet if you're lucky. As a very sad man, I
actually count the number of mistakes that is made in each Festive 50 and
write the figure in a little box on the sheet on which I write down details
of the Festive Fifty as they're read out (along with other equally usefuls
stats such as total all-time appearances in Festive 50, all-time highest
ranking non-singles, etc. etc.) This I find very exciting and stimulating.

The only thing that really scares me is when things get cocked up completely
and the emergency system kicks in, suddenly dumping Madonna's "Beautiful
Stranger" and Dario G's "Sunchyme" into my refined evening of off-kilter
obscurity. Scary.

Daniel
