We listen to him, not because of his technical proficiencies (I'm amazed he has mastered CD players), but his inner vision as to what the general public will be listening to in 10 years time and fortunately for us, are listening to NOW. You can't blame him for the feative 50's (typical or all time), that is down to us "the listeners". We can, if we must, blame him for the Peelenium, which from mid '60's onwards were in my opinion, landmark ("classic") tracks. Sorry to go on but to me, he is "god", and my standard reply to the the standard question "what music do you like" is "If it's alright by Peely, then it's alright by me". You'll have to excuse the wine-sodden ramblings of someone only just the right side of 50. Make the most of him while you may, can anyone honstly think of anyone who can replace him and his insight. When you listen to something like Chris Moyles or whatever (I'm forced to listen to afterneoon radio 1 on the school bus) the slickness and total arrogance of it all are sickening. Besides, there isn't a DJ who can match the quality of the material that John plays. Dave Pearce may appear to be able to play tracks at the right speed, but all he has to do is press the "shuffle" button on a CD player containing "Now 42" (or wherever they're up to these days. last one I bought was 4, I think). The Great Man, by contrast, gets thousands of different bits of vinyl, mostly with either (a) willfully arty graphic design which makes it impossible to learn anything about the record, let alone the speed, or (b) white labels with no info whatseoever. A loose photocopied sheet if you're lucky. As a very sad man, I actually count the number of mistakes that is made in each Festive 50 and write the figure in a little box on the sheet on which I write down details of the Festive Fifty as they're read out (along with other equally usefuls stats such as total all-time appearances in Festive 50, all-time highest ranking non-singles, etc. etc.) This I find very exciting and stimulating. The only thing that really scares me is when things get cocked up completely and the emergency system kicks in, suddenly dumping Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" and Dario G's "Sunchyme" into my refined evening of off-kilter obscurity. This is a CAMPAIGN. The Brits nominations for best video have just been announced. You have, in your hands, the power to make two of Britains most fantastic and scary artistes famous, in a Belle and Sebastian Stylee. These people are; Chris Cunningham, one of the most original and creative video directors in the World (now retired) and Aphex Twin (a.k.a.) Richard D. James, the household name in avant-garde electronica (or whatever you wish to call it). Your mission, if you choose to accept it is to visit the Brits nomination site - http://www.britsvoting.com and place your vote for WINDOWLICKER as the UKs top video of this year. I know that many of you are probably Spike Jonze fans, (he has directed the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim nominations), but he is already a rather well established name in the music video and film world. Chris Cunningham is still to release his film ideas and hasn't been on any MTV award shows yet. Equally, Aphex Twin needs to be on the Brits for several reasons. Firstly, the Brits is stagnating, with a poor lack of diversity and innovation being shown in the winners. Aphex Twin and his Rephlex posse will only serve to make it a million trillion times more interesting and they're slightly more deserving then Robbie Williams. For those of you aren't sure of the video in question, Visit; www.warpnet.com The video, crudely summarised, is a parody of those American rap-video booty fixated affairs, but amazingly shot, with a bizarre twist involving these beautiful filles prancing about with Aphex Twin's face electronically placed onto their pretty visages. Which is all a bit shocking really. This will be the second blow to the British Music Industry after Belle and Sebastian winning the Brits Best newcomer last year (thanks to a university mass voting session). Out of the celebrity Nominations panel on MTV uk, Jamie Theakston pleaded for it to be included on the grounds of diversity, whilst Baby Spice begged for it to be removed. The other nominations are; 1. Aphex Twin 'Windowlicker' 2. The Chemical Brothers 'Let Forever Be' 3. Fatboy Slim 'Praise You' 4. Supergrass 'Pumping On Your Stereo' 5. Robbie Williams 'She's The One' You KNOW what to do... Please note - multiple votes from the same person will be disqualified. Please distribute and edit as required this email to as many people as you can. Take a look at the video for yourself on www.warpnet.com and see its brilliance for yourself! ---- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- pete@... ^ http://www.badmusic.net Donate Food For Free http://www.thehungersite.com CLEAN SHAVEN # 3: 136 pages, just 1 Interviews with The Monsoon Bassoon, Hirameka Hi-Fi , Terrorvision, Rothko, Vandals, Monkey Boy, Kilter, 3 Colours Red, Reynolds & Fruitbat; as well as some stuff you actually do like. Ed Blackmore wrote: > I'm interested how teachers intend to promote homosexuality anyway. That's very much the crux of the objection - the wording. It is based on the offensive assumption that a homosexual teacher wants to actively promote homosexuality, something which as you say is quite ludicrous. Rather, it has to outlaw the "promotion" of homosexuality because it would be politically incorrect to outlaw the "mentioning" of homosexuality. The intent underlying this clause is however precisely to outlaw the mentioning of homosexuality in the personal and social education parts of the curriculum. If you're not allowed to "promote" homosexuality then the implication is that you are allowed to "promote", or are even encouraged to promote, heterosexuality. Is that really what they mean? The lack of logic and balance in the wording of the clause points quite clearly towards its prejudicial intent. And attempting to limit a teacher's freedom to talk about homosexuality is like limiting a teacher's ability to mention, say, Poland, or the fact that people ride bikes. > Saying all this I also support fieldsports (inc. fox hunting) so I > really can't see us agreeing on anything. But it certainly made me smile when B&Seb won it (I'm not a great fan either), and thoroughly pissed off Pete Waterman too. A small victory, meaningless probably, but good for them. And there was no rigging, such as what Waterman suggested. Just the liink to the voting website was linked from the B&S website, and that was where from a lot of the voters reached it from. We seem to be coming at this from two different angles. You seem to have the idea that the Brits is some sort of measure of musical worth. I suggest it is a marketing exercise on behalf of the UK music industry. Other people on the list can decide what they think it is! The organisers try very hard to orchestrate everything each time. This is a hard thing to do because there are many people trying to unorchestrate it in search of some cheap publicity Most years someone finds a way through. However what you can see is that they take great care that what happens one year can't be repeated the next. The celebs are moved away from the stage after Jarvis, the politicos are moved away from the celebs after Chumbawumba. It therefore follows that they are likely to take great care with the email votes this year. Best New Band is an important category and the industry won't let it be won again by anyone they don't want it to be won by. The Aphex Twin may win but that's because its in a completely unimportant category - 'Best Video For A Single Everyone Forgot About Months Ago'. It sells no records and probably won't make it on to television unless Robbie Williams wins it It's even more pointless than most Brit awards. Go on - tell me who won it last year without looking it up! That about winds it up I think. Either you believe in the Brits or you don't I don't! martinw thoroughly cynical From troche@... Go on, it'll be Monday morning when you get this. You'll have nothing else you will want to do if you've been forced to be awake, especially if yr reading this at school/college/uni/work. Inndulge me. And yo'selves.. BADMUSIC is the label-cum-website fanzine """thing""" that is being "done" by pete flynn of Clean Shaven fanzine, and ric melia, his friend and contributor. He has had the crazy idea of doing a record label. He has also succeeded in pestering me to put the fanzine on-line. So here we are. http://www.BADMUSIC.net the Clean^Shaven half of Badmusic_dot_net is basically an ropey cosmetic extension of Clean Shaven, some fanzine based in the Godalming/Guildford area in the sarf of england with fetishes for the likes of The Monsoon Bassoon/Carter USM/Blur/Leeds United FC/noisey fine muzik/vitriol and bile and soooo much more. Apologies to those who've spent money on the zine, but hey you have it on the net now for FREE. Right, the hard sell..... you get the interior of my head in the form of some spur-of-the-moment personal writing; musical goodies in the form of important (& elsewhere not really covered) NEWS and a few bunches of reviews for you to disagree with (more still to be done--gigs and LPs from '99 and 2000 are impending..); and in the future there will be columns and pieces from other people with things of worth to say too. PLUS (and arguably most importantly), there's a fair chunk of the site devoted to the local (Surrey/Hampshire) music scene; this includes information about some of the better bands around currently, as well as constantly-updated information on gigs in the area (AND info on the venues and how to get to them, just for you my friends). Please pass information of the site on to people you know who would be interested, spread the word, I want Badmusic to work as a music resource thing for the burgeoning local scene. Cheerz. In fact, tell all yr mates/family/pets/enemies about it ALL. Leave a message in the guestbook. Tell me you want your site linked to me (or un-linked, if you hate it). Whatever. Just go have a look around.. [pleeeeeease]. AND THEN there's the other half: Badmusic the LABEL, which is Ric's baby, but I'll quickly mention it. The first release is by the stunning Caretaker, who've already got fans in Seafood and Jamie of Scarfo/Fiji, Fierce Panda rekkids (a future EP of whose they will be contributing too), and a growing legion of others. And thenn there's the plans we've got for future things. If you would like to be kept up to date on the "happenings" of BADMUSIC, please add your email to the mailing list on the front of the site!. This is basically a one-off to friends / people i "know" (in whatever vague sense). If yuo don't get on the list, I'll know where we stand. hmph. [....] And eternal apologies to anyone i owe emails/letters/fanzines to *STILL*, all will be rectified in the next 2 weeks. (no really....it _will_...) Sleep tight, my ducklings. So I thought I'd start by saying how disappointed I was with it, especially the top 10. It seems people vote for the "big" bands (e.g. The Fall, Flaming Lips, Gorky's, SFA) no matter how good their songs were. Take Gorky's for example, they released one single in 1999, therefore Gorky's fans feel that they have to vote for it. No.5?, it wouldn't make my top 100 (and I quite like the band). At least it was nice to see a good showing from Hefner. Anyway, here are the 3 that I voted for: 3. Plone - Be rude to your school 2. Autechre - Netlon Sentinel 1. Calexico - Glowing heart of the world (how did this not make the top 50?) I would be interested to see what other people voted for. That's all from me, Rob P.S. No, just a question... Is it possible for you to compile a list, and post it here, of all the radio stations you do programs for? Meaning all the shows besides the obvious Radio 1 and the BBCWS half-hour? I ask this because on one BBC program recently you mentioned Radio Mafia, a station - where was it, Finland? Although Im not John, I thought I should probably say something about this, since Im the token Finnish person in this onelist community. Radiomafia is part of YLE, which is the equivalent of BBC here in Finland (ie national broadcasting company). Mr Peel has done a one-hour fortnightly show for Finnish radio since 1986 (if I remember correctly). Since the beginning of this year his show has been rescheduled and it now broadcasts on every other Wednesday at 11-12 P.M. London time, so the next show should come out on March 8th. It should be fairly easy to listen to (yes, "kuuntele" is Finnish for "listen", you dummies) via the net, as I occasionally try to catch an earful of his Radio 1 shows, too. Though the stuff he plays on our shows is for the most part (about 80%) the same as on his main programmes. Only we dont get any of those session tracks, those being copyrighted property of BBC and thus not possible to broadcast here. But luckily, we were spared those ridiculous millennium charts and festive fifties which I think are a complete waste of time. Although I must say, I was quite amused when I read your comments about them. Poland? Give us a f***ing break! Goofy Kent bastard brother of ClarknNick
