Generally all the bands that you'd really have liked to have heard but they obviously either never played on Top Of The Pops, The Old Grey Whistle Test or anything else that the BBC has the rights to. It was nice to see Mark E Smith upright for a change. Was there any particular reason that during the "Sounds of the 60s and 70s" bit that Hendrix was allocated a whole 20-30 seconds while everyone else was played in full (twice in the case of The Faces)? And just how many times were Orbital mentioned? > I did have a hearty laugh at Jo Wiley's trail for the shows to come - "The > Captain... that's Captain Beefheart, OF COURSE". Without a discernible > trace of irony. I bet she was still surprised that they managed to do a whole hour's documentary without mentioning "Happy Talk". The thing that struck me most during the documentary about Peel's career is just how much his accent has changed. During the early years he sounded as if he had about as much personality as a Speak Your Weight Machine. Overall though, I quite enjoyed it. Quite why we needed a 20 minute piece telling us that William's bedroom's full of snot filled tissues I don't know though. dougie dougal mckinnon (d.mckinnon@...) From smchugh@... I also noted that the Hendrix piece was just film, the sound, presumably from a record, didn't sync up at all (a bit like with Siouxsie). We were talking about this at home, I know he's mentioned this in interview before and admits that he changed his voice, I think his explanation was that his 'natural' accent is the posh one which in general isn't the kind of accent which sounds too animated. But when he altered his accent for the purpose of blagging his way into US radio it kind of stuck. Maybe he was a nervous dj when he was young hence everything sounding a bit stilted? Thae radio stuff from last night was quite interesting; were the Ragga Twins really live, they seemed to segue from a session into a live set. Peel reckons that he and the interviewer had a light hearted talk about a whole load of things about being a father/son but that they deliberately edited out everything else bar him having a go at William. He said that on Sunday night after they watched it Wiliam told him "to go and do various things, some of which are physically impossible", but that they are Ok now. He also said that some woman stopped him in the street to tell him how nasty he was. So all of you out there beware when a camera crew turns up to make a documentary on your 60th birthday. dougie dougal mckinnon (d.mckinnon@...) From smchugh@... I don't know how accurate that might be as the chat was probably fuelled by red wine; he certainly did have a lot to say about it, but it was certainly edited by someone with an interest in psychoanalysis as they did rather dwell on this subject - and the interviewer was no better, just when the conversation would return to music or the war or something more fruitful, he would say "so, back to your son's room then". I was a bit shocked by the lack of balance in the interview. I think the only times any of the children other than William were mentioned were when he said they all leave the room when he comes in to watch TV and when he referred to "William and the other children". It looked to me like anything nice that he had to say about them ended up on the cutting room floor, which makes me wonder whether the motivation was to try and stir up further criticism about his Radio 4 program. The radio shows for Wednesday and > Thursday are covering what I take to be live stuff which > wasn't broadcast from Maida Vale as there were > documentaries going out at the time - last night had Bonny > Prince Billy and, er, someone else, Cinerama are tonight. Apart from a brief lapse mid-August, and the upheaval caused by Peel's 60th Birthday celebrations, his BBC Radio One show is going out as normal, three days a week, and as Stig said, you can now listen to these shows live on the Radio One website. Lorcan only updates his site sporadically, because the BBC site normally keeps pretty well up to date. The recent lapse in the Peel website tracklistings is because they have updated the website over the last couple of weeks. The new one started up yesterday.
