I can see the point though, it's like an opportunity that can't be missed (or something) to cover all the music of the last 100 years/2000 years/all time. However, I'm sure many of us recall that whenever he ran parallel 50's before there was no chance at all of something from this year getting into the all-time chart as everyone's nature says 'get 6, not 4 or 5, of your favourites on the list'. That might not be a bad thing as when it was 'all-time- charts in the past they were full of stuff from the current year, but neither is representative. But I stilll think it would be interesting to see how much we've gone away (if at all) from the Atmosphere vs. Anarchy battles of the early 80's. I won't be voting in this one because as someone else said it's going to be near impossible to pick 3 tracks which would stand above everything else ever. Besides with so many millions of songs to chose from and because some people have a favourite song for a personal reason its bound to be that the ones that get in are just common songs that most people have heard of. There is a DJ round these parts called Dave Fanning who do'es a Fannings Fab 50 every year and its always a question of all time classics and every year the no. 1 and 2 just swaps between Creep and Smells like teen Spirit. I think the Peelenium is enough to mark the Millenium, if he wanted to do more perhaps a show at the end of the year with Peel just picking his favourite tunes/sessions would make more interesting listening. Message-ID: <76369.119.430.959309995@...> Dear all I think a few of us are being a bit po-faced, even puritanical, about this idea. What was it John Prescott said to Tony Blair? ("We're not much of a bloody Government if we can't organise a good party for the Millenium" or some such coinage). And don't forget the practicalities of radio production and promotion: to get your show noticed over the holidays you have to come up with something unusual; and it also allows presenters of live shows - who can't pre-record every single shift like Radio 4 people do for Christmas - to have an easy plan for the holidays. I think the two daily radio experiences I've enjoyed most this year have been the Peelenium (for all its faults - especially Lynn's wobbly grasp of British and world history, whcih I'm glad to hear Peel now subtly expressing disbelief about even as he reads out these bits) and Radio 4's This Sceptred Isle - The 20th Century. It's like the Festival of Britain and the Millenium Dome. Everyone loves to sneer and bash 'em before the event, but come the day we'll all be glad they were there to help mark something special. So roll on the all-time Festive 50. He hasn't done one since, er, 1980, is it, so why not now? I agree, however, it's likely to be a combination of this year and last year's faves plus a few snatches of Nirvana, The Smiths (now there's a band who have not aged well, something I never thought I'd say - I now find most of their records almost cringe-making!) et al. I fear there will be few rap, drum 'n'bass, house, soul or reggae records at all... But those scenes, when they have broken big, have shifted away from Peel's original championing of them to a main-stream audience, as have yer Nirvanas. The only 'scene' which Peel has consistently broadcast and which has never broken big is what most people refer to as 'indie' ie white kids with guitars. Maybe the reason why that's his main listenership and why that's all that appears in the Festive Fifty? a very simplistic argument, but... Rob From annie.oleary@... Peel's show has always been about playing the new stuff that no other Radio 1 shows will play. A sign of the vast improvement in Radio One over the last few years is that a lot of the new Rap, Dance, Drum and Bass etc now gets played first by Jules, Westwood, Fabio & Grooverider etc, so Peel has at least some of the pressure off him in these fields. I think he was the first to play that Rouge 12" last week - great record! Since so many great records came out this year, I personally will be voting for the same three records in both charts. If everybody did that it would render the all time one obselete, and Peelie would be able to play us more new stuff, which he's always complaining he doesn't get enough time to play. The Peelentury has been fascinating, (but how are they going to find any good records from the '80s?), but if you think about it, its deprived us of four or more new records a show for a hundred shows. That's 400 new tracks we'll probably never hear, there must be some great stuff piling up in the corridors and garden sheds of Peel Acres. Perhaps Radio 2 could offer Peel a nostalgia show (Like the once great Billy Bragg now has), so he could keep his proper show for new stuff. He'd then need a footie talk show on 5 live, and to take over "Mixing It" on Radio 3, and he'd have followed Ivor Cutler's example and broadcast on all five BBC national radio stations! I'm rambling now, so I'll go. Cheers, Rocker, rocker@... From keith@... Mon Nov 8 14:16:28 1999 From: keith@... I think Rocker's suggestion is the best so far, voting for the best three tracks from this year in both charts. It's such a difficult thing to choose records that you think are the best of all time without it being wholly subjective, sentimental, arbitrary, that the only way forward is probably to choose the records that mean the most to you at this moment. Which for me, and in the ongoing spirit of the Peel programme, would be stuff from this year. > The Peelentury has been fascinating, (but how are they going to find any good > records from the '80s?), but if you think about it, its deprived us of four > or more new records a show for a hundred shows. Good point but many of these records up to, say, the sixties, many of us won't have ever heard. So it's not as if it is *just* taking up airtime without being interesting in itself. On the whole I think it's been an overwhelmingly positive experience for all of us. And on that heartwarming note I shall go and sit with the dogs by the fire. Stig -- jmsmall@... From sheetals@... Isn't there a record fair down that way? Get along there young man and find obscure albums for 2/3 of the HMV price... On balance I've ejoyed the Peelennium. At times it's been hard to put up with but I'm disappointed to have missed a lot of the 50's and early 60's stuff. I don't think it's stopped us hearing too many new records either, after all Peel always plays old stuff. I think the difficulty of choosing the best 3 tracks of the year is probably why I rarely vote in the F50, so an all-time one is going to be difficult to choose, but it's easy to start agonising over these things and trying to get it exactly right when it's just there for a bit of a laugh really. But I'm kind of enjoying this side-trip, from the parts of his programmes I've managed to catch here in the States via cassette and internet. And after all, if a DJ is to look back and provide some context, who better than Peel? I surmise the real point of the all time F50 is two-fold: a) to come to some sort of one-time cultural consensus and b) to amuse Peel. So when I send off my post card this week it'll probably list these 3 tracks: 1) Rites Of Spring - Igor Stravinsky 2) So What - Miles Davis 3) Hit The North - The Fall And yours? tom roche atlanta ps: glad Ken Garner is still on the list From troche@... I'm told that Peel read an e-mail of mine late in the show Wednesday night (about a song called Pop A Top.) I listened to the 1st 90 minutes while cooking dinner and eating (Peel is on at the dinner hours here in the eastern US.) I'd sent the e-mail off about 15 minutes before the show started and really did not expect him to read it, but apparently he did, soon after I'd stopped listeneing. So as you are reviewing the show for the Saloon title, let me know if this is there also, and let me know how I might pay you to send me a copy. Thanks tom From topcat@...
